‎Smith Martin Cruz novel; Dennis Potter screenwriter; Michael Apted director; Lee Marvin William Hurt Brian Dennehy starring‎

‎Gorky Park Original screenplay actor Lee Marvin's leatherbound presentation copy with associated ephemera‎

‎Los Angeles: Eagle Associates / Orion Pictures 1983. Third Draft script and Final Shooting script for the 1983 film "Gorky Park" based on the 1981 novel by Martin Cruz Smith. Actor Lee Marvin's leather-bound presentation copy from director Michael Apted and producer Howard W. Koch Jr. bound in maroon leather with Marvin's name in gilt at the bottom right corner of the front board and with two notable pieces of associated ephemera: a a Typed Letter Signed from Apted Koch and producer Gene Kirkwood on production stationery for the film reading "Dear Lee / Please accept this gift as a momento sic of the time we all spent together on GORKY PARK" and b an attractive greeting card from Apted and Koch with a note in holograph ink referring to the shooting location for the film which reads "Welcome to Moscow! We're glad you're here! / Best / Howard and Michael." On the rear of the envelope is a holograph pencil notation in Marvin's hand reading "From Howard Koch upon arrival in Finland." And accordingly the shooting location for the film was Finland not Moscow as "Glasnost" had not yet taken effect. In the film a very faithful rendering of Cruz-Smith's Cold War novel Marvin plays a Armand Hammer-style American businessman who is playing hell with Soviet police inspector William Hurt in a mystery that is not so much a "whodunit" as a "whydunit." An underrated and appropriately bleak entry in the Cold War cinema genre by the versatile director Apted. Maroon leather with gilt titles and rule with matching glossy endpapers. Title page present with credits for screenwriter Potter and novelist Cruz-Smith. 133 leaves Xerographically duplicated. Pages and binding about Fine. From the estate of Lee Marvin. ‎Candy Original screenplay for the 1968 film copy belonging to director Frank Perry‎

‎New York: Francis Productions Inc 1968. First Draft script for the 1968 film. Copy belonging to Frank Perry with his name in red holograph ink on the title page. Perry considered making the film but it was ultimately directed by Christian Marquand. This draft is credited solely to Southern though Buck Henry was ultimately given full credit for the adaptation from the novel by Southern and Mason Hoffenberg. In her memoir "Trippin' with Terry Southern: What I Think I Remember" Gail Gerber details at some length the tangle of legal problems over the publication of "Candy" in the US and abroad. Publication was poorly controlled resulting in numerous pirated editions and lawsuits involving Maurice Girodias Olympia Press Putnam and small US paperback publishers such as Lancer Greenleaf and Brandon House. She notes "Despite the popularity of the novel Hollywood was always leery about getting involved with properties that have 'clouded title' so it was no surprise that Frank Perry gave up on the idea of directing the film version of 'Candy' much to Terry's disappointment." Black titled Studio Duplicating Service wrappers. Title page present undated noted as First Draft with credits for screenwriters Southern and Mason Hoffenberg. 136 leaves mimeograph duplication. ‎Hollywood: Christian Marquand Productions 1968. 1158 leaves. Quarto legal format. Mimeographed typescript punched at top and claspbound. Some moisture discoloration and rumpling at upper left corner of textblock otherwise a good copy. A combined continuity script for the 1968 film based on Buck Henry's adaptation of Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg's novel. Directed by Christian Marquand and starring Marlon Brando Richard Burton John Huston James Coburn Ringo Starr Charles Aznavour and oh introducing Ewa Aulin as Candy the film demonstrated that good source material a talented screenwriter and a cast of heavy- weights don't inevitably add up to success. ‎The Loved One Original screenplay for the 1965 film crew member copy with shooting schedule‎

‎Beverly Hills CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM 1964. Draft script for the 1965 film based on the 1948 novel by Evelyn Waugh legendarily co-written by Terry Southern and Christopher Isherwood. Deluxe working script belonging to uncredited crew member William Todd Mason with his name and phone number in holograph ink on the title page and some brief penciled annotations on three pages. Laid in is a corner stitched three page Staff and Crew list with two name additions in holograph red ink on the second page. Included is a vintage studio still photograph from the film. An early draft issued nearly two years prior to the film's October 1965 release with substantial differences from the finished film. The sister film to "Dr. Strangelove" and in the eyes of many just as much a masterpiece of exquisitely wrought black humor. Made in the US but in a dense British-American style. Ostensibly a satire on the funeral business in which a young British poet winds up in a Hollywood cemetery as part of an inheritance arrangement-but in reality a satire of Hollywood itself as well as the Western malaise of the mid 1960s. Script: Self wrappers presumably as this draft was issued. Title page present rubber stamped copy No. 70 dated July 21 1964 with credits for screenwriters Southern and Isherwood. 158 leaves mimeograph duplication with blue revision pages throughout dated 7-22-64.
