‎Juanita of Downieville ie. Josefa Segovia: Chappel Edward screenwriter i. e.‎

‎Typescript Unproduced Screenplay/Treatment: "NAKED IN HIS BLOOD" . BASED ON A STORY BY ROBERT JAMES DE MARIA‎

‎Los Angeles: Robert James de Maria 1971. 183pp. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript printed on rectos only. Punched and bound in unlettered stiff card binder. Title leaf pulled at top binder clasp otherwise very near fine. Through p. 38 a partial preliminary draft of the screenplay and from p. 39 to conclusion a treatment for an interesting but evidently unsuccessful effort to translate to the screen the historical story of "Juanita" of Downieville a Mexican-American woman who was accused of murder and lynched in Downieville California in July of 1851 -- the first and only known woman lynched in Gold Rush era California. Details of "Juanita's" life up to her death including her actual name remained sketchy in early historical accounts but research into her case in the mid 1970s by Martha Cotera established that her actual name was likely Josefa Segovia and that she was around 26 at the time of her lynching. The Anglo press of the time evidently referred to her as "Juanita" based on the stereotypical shorthand portrayal of Mexican women in the press. Chappel or occasionally "Chappell" is credited with the screenplay of at least one film that saw production the 1970 Richard Boone and Leslie Caron B-western MADRON as well as script work for such television shows as HAWAIIAN EYE and 26 MEN. The ultimate fate of this project is not indicated in the present material and thus can only be speculated upon. However given the controversial and sensational character of the subject as well as the vague and often contradictory historical accounts of the actual events it is just possible that studios had no appetite for handling such a highly-charged topic in this sensationalized fashion at a point in time when the Chicano Movement and the Chicana Feminist Movement were gathering momentum. Laid in is a vintage borderless reference photograph from the film. An unusual internal script from the production of the Soviet-Italian co-production that was ultimately distributed worldwide by Paramount Pictures. Not a post-production script in the typical sense meaning a script that reflects the finished edited film. Rather a script that was produced in the midst of editing with numerous annotations regarding editing changes that still need to be made. The text is in English but the wrapper is Italian meaning that it was likely issued by the Italian arm of the production. The commander of a failed 1928 Arctic airship expedition remembers the events of the "Italia" airship flight crash and subsequent rescue efforts. The "ghosts" of people involved in the events appear in his memories to assist him in determining his guilt in the affair. The reminiscences are mixed with the real action: the flight of the "Italia" the air rescue operation from Kings Bay airfield the expedition of the "Krassin" ice-breaker. A sort of human touch is added by the ever beautiful C.C. playing Malmgren's girlfriend. Green titled wrappers. Noting 12 reels. Carbon typescript on onionskin stock. Very Good.
