Jennifer Jones offers a virtual reprise of her sultry performance in "Duel in the Sun" as the titular heroine of this film. Born into a poor-white-trash Southern family Ruby intends to improve her lot by marrying into wealth. Her casual beau Boake Tackman Heston considers Ruby unfit for marriage but prosperous businessman Jim Gentry Malden is eager and willing to make her his wife. Jim Gentry dies in an accident and the consensus of opinion is that he was killed by the covetous Ruby. For some reason this ignites a passion in Boake and he renews his torrid romance with the widow Gentry. Ruby's crazed brother Jewel James Anderson puts an end to this affair with a shotgun provoking a violent response from Ruby and a "Lady or the Tiger"-esque ending. ‎Los Angeles: Selznick International 1942. Second Draft treatment script for an unproduced film "Two Against Tomorrow" with alternate titles "The Big Parade of 1942" "No Time for Tears" "12 Stolen Hours" and "Lover Come Back" also written on the front wrapper. One of a number of original scripts written by noted screenwriter and novelist Viertel for producer David O. Selznick in the early 1940s. We know of one earlier draft of the treatment dated simply "June 1942." This draft has added blue revision pages a distribution page and a date of June 18 1942. Viertel's script went fairly far into the pre-production process. According to a New York Times article on August 19 1942 MGM purchased the property from Viertel who at the time was in the Marine Corps but more likely it was purchased from Selznick as this script dated June 1942 is clearly noted as a Selznick property. The article goes on to note that the picture was assigned MGM to producer Edgar Selwyn. A story set in Manila told from the perspective of a woman working at a Filipino rubber factory during the first raids by the Japanese. With alternate titles likely suggested by Viertel proposed on the title page: "The Big Parade of 1942" "No Time for Tears" "12 Stolen Hours" and "Lover Come Back." Pale blue titled wrappers dated June 18th 1942 with credits for Peter Viertel. Distribution page present with receipt intact rubber stamped copy number as called for.
