After an encounter with two outlaws Pernell Roberts and James Coburn and hostile Indians at a stagecoach way station they continue their journey accompanied by the newly widowed station master's wife Karen Steele and the outlaws for protection. In pursuit is Billy John's brother Frank Lee Van Cleef who we find out years earlier hung Brigade's wife in retribution for arresting him for murder.
