‎Finler, Jeol W‎

‎Alfred Hitchcock. The Hollywood Years.‎

‎B.T. Batsford Ltd.; London, 1992. 176 S.; zahlr. Abb.; kart.‎

‎Sehr gutes Ex. - Introduction - 1939-40: Hitchcock and Selznick - Rebecca and Foreign Correspondent - 1940-42: RKO and Universal - From Mr and Mrs Smith to Shadow of a Doubt - 1943-47: War Films and Selznick Again - From Lifeboat to The Paradine Case - 1948-53: Hitchcock Goes Independent - From Rope to Dial M For Murder - 1953-55: Paramount - From Rear Window to The Man Who Knew Too Much - 1956-64: The Peak Years in America - From The Wrong Man to Mamie - 1965-76: Hitchcock in Decline - From Torn Curtain to Family Plot - Filmography - Selective Bibliography. // In this new and original assessment of Hitchcock's American career from his arrival in Hollywood in 1939 up to his last films in the 1970s, Joel Finler shows how Hitchcock succeeded in quickly fitting into the American studio system with its emphasis on stars, technical expertise and success at the box office to become one of the most influential directors of the twentieth century. These years cover Hitchcock's most accomplished period of film-making and the author uncovers many links with the best of Hitchcock's earlier British films from the 1930s. Popularly known as the 'master of suspense', Hitchcock used the thriller format as a means of probing deep into our fears, foibles and neuroses. His pictures work on many levels: his mastery of the cinematic medium is demonstrated not only through the movies, plot lines, characters and relationships within his films, but also in his use of the camera, editing, colour, and widescreen techniques. As well as the films themselves, Joel Finler discusses the director's working methods - his relations with producers and production companies, favoured stars, writers and other collaborators - with reference to budgets, box office receipts and Hitchcock's involvement in virtually every aspect of each production from the script and design to editing and scoring. A detailed filmography with plot synopses completes the text which is illustrated thoughout with production shots and film stills. ISBN 0713467193‎

‎All-Time Box-Office Hits. Gen.-Ed.: Neil Sinyard.‎

‎Gallery Books; NY, 1985. 190 S.; zahlr. Illustr.; 29,5 cm; fadengeh., illustr. Orig.-Pappband mit illustr. OUmschlag.‎

‎Ein gutes Ex. - Englisch. - ... All-Time Box-Office Hits looks at Hollywood's most commercially successful films on a decade-by-decade basis, from the 1930s right up to the present day, revealing the reasons for their staggering popularity. The authors look at: The Golden Age of the thirties which, among other hits, produced 42ndStreet (describing how Busby Berkeley created his unique dance routines) and Gone With the Wind, which won an astonishing nine Oscars Awards in 1939 and set unprecedented standards for the star-studded spectacular. The troubled forties, when Hollywood came under siege from politicians, television and declining audiences but stayed the course thanks to star performances from Abbott and Costello, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Spencer Tracy, and movie hits including The Jolson Story, The Best Years of Our Lives, For Whom the Bell Tolls and Spellbound. The surprising diversity of the fifties when some of the greatest directors made some of their most prestigious films - Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo, Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard and John Ford's The Searchers - and Marilyn Monroe, Rock Hudson, Cary Grant and Elizabeth Taylor hit the movie headlines. ? ‎All Time Movie Favourites. Vorwort von Dustin Hoffman.‎

‎Sundial; London, 1975. 189 S.; zahlr. Fotos; gr.-8°. Fadengehefteter Originalpappband mit Schutzumschlag.‎

‎Sehr gutes Ex. - Introduction -- The Silents -- Studios and Stars -- The War and After -- Independents and Others -- The Cinema goes Modern -- New Directions. // In assembling this book, which is about 200 of the greatest movies to have come from Hollywood and London, with its inevitable emphasis on the work of the directors, the editors felt it would be appropriate also to hear from an actor - to have a personal memoir from a man who is indeed one of the most respected movie actors of our time, Dustin Hoffman. // Notes From In Front Of The Camera - "... On reading this book, I was naturally pleased to find that three of my films had been included. In particular, I was even more pleased that the editors had chosen the three that are my favourites too! "The screen test for The Graduate was a disaster. But Mike Nichols saw something in me that he could use. Panic, maybe? It was Nichols' picture - his victory rather than mine. But what an opportunity for a beginner! More recently, Lenny is simply the best role I've had since Ratso in Midnight Cowboy. (Anyone who comes to New York and isn't a millionaire feels as lonely as the Cowboy and Ratso.) People sometimes suggest the two roles are in some way related, but I don't think they are except possibly to me in the purely personal sense that Ratso represents that part of myself that feels inadequate, fraudulent; and Lenny is that part of myself that feels important, unique ..." ‎Frankfurt am Main : Suhrkamp, 1988. 190 S. ; 19 cm; fadengeh. Orig.-Pappband m. OUmschl.‎

‎Gutes Ex. - "Fitzgeralds . . . In filigrana appare, secondo il manifestino, la situazione simile in Italia, dove il governo De Gasperi potrebbe tentare di “vietare ‘Roma città aperta’ come Truman ha vietato ‘Furore’ di Ford e vieta ‘Duello al sole’ di King Vidor”. 4 leaves, 28 cm, propaganda flyer printed by the Italian Popular Democratic Front, that is the list that united the Communist Party of Togliatti and the Socialist Party of Nenni. In particular, this flyer stigmatizes the famous witch hunt organized by the Truman administration against anyone suspected of sympathizing with communism and consequently branded as anti-American, even in the world of cinema. Mention is made of the trial that took place against some of the most well-known actors and actresses of the star-system, such as Kathryn Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Erroll Flynn, to name but a few. The accusations, true or alleged, often based on unfounded allegations, were often translated into the impossibility for some to be able to continue working: director Edward Dmytryk will have to leave the US and emigrate to Europe. According to the leaflet, the similar situation might happen in Italy, where the De Gasperi government could try to "ban 'Roma città aperta' as Truman had banned Ford's 'The Grapes of Wrath' as well as King Vidor's 'Duel in the sun'".‎
