‎Monroe Marilyn and Arthur Miller‎

‎Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller Signed Financial Statement.‎

‎Rare original 1957 Woodbury Savings Bank financial statement signed by both Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller in the beginning of their five-year marriage. One page partially printed the statement is dated September 9 1957 and lists the couple's joint annual income as $50000 total expenses as $30000 or - and amount of life insurance as $50000. The preparer has also listed Monroe as self-employed and President of Marilyn Monroe Production with a suit pending against the company as a corporation. Monroe and Miller's ages are also listed respectively as 31 and 41. Signed at the conclusion of the document "Arthur Miller" and "Marilyn Monroe Miller." In very good condition. Accompanied by a mimeograph of the loan agreement for $35000 for which the statement was prepared. After filming for The Seven Year Itch wrapped up in November 1954 Monroe left Hollywood for the East Coast where she and photographer Milton Greene founded their own production company Marilyn Monroe Productions MMP. Monroe asserted that she was no longer under contract to Fox as it had not fulfilled its duties such as paying her the promised bonus beginning a year-long legal battle between her and Fox in January 1955. After founding MMP Monroe moved to Manhattan and spent 1955 studying acting where she began dating actor Marlon Brando and playwright Arthur Miller. On June 29 Monroe and Miller were married at the Westchester County Court in White Plains New York; two days later they had a Jewish ceremony at the home of Kay Brown Miller's literary agent in Waccabuc New York. With the marriage Monroe converted to Judaism which led Egypt to ban all of her films. Due to Monroe's status as a sex symbol and Miller's image as an intellectual the media saw the union as a mismatch as evidenced by Variety's headline "Egghead Weds Hourglass." Monroe and Miller separated after the filming of Lets Make Love in 1960 after both carried on extramarital affairs Monroe with her co-star Yves Montand and Miller with set photographer Inge Morath. unknown books‎

‎MONROE, MARILYN & JOSEPH PAPP‎

‎Collection of Two Typed Letters Signed Written to Marilyn Monroe from Theatrical Producer Joseph Papp Plus a Joseph Papp Manuscript Regarding Establishing the New York Shakespeare Festival‎

‎New York: 6 pages quarto 1959. Written on the stationery of the New York Shakespeare Festival the first letter dated June 12 1959 from Joseph Papp to Marilyn Monroe elaborately detailing Papp’s plans to establish the New York Shakespeare Festival. Papp asks her to join their committee to include such figures as Tennessee Williams Helen Hayes Mark Van Doren Eleanor Roosevelt etc. With the second letter dated December 16 1959 Marilyn Monroe has joined the committee and details the work he is doing to try to build an amphitheater in Central Park to give free Shakespeare plays. With a 3 page carbon typescript manuscript he sent to Monroe of an article that Joseph Papp published in the New York Herald Tribune regarding his struggles with New York Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. The free festival was originally conceived by director-producer Joseph Papp in 1954. Papp starting having the plays lawn in front of Turtle Pond in Central Park. In 1959 Parks Commissioner Robert Moses demanded that Papp and his company charge a fee for the performances to cover the cost of "grass erosion." A court battle ensued. Papp continued to fight Moses winning his enduring respect and the quote "well let's build the bastard a theater." Following this Moses requested funds from the city for the construction of an amphitheater in the park. Marilyn Monroe dreamed of starring in a film based on a play by William Shakespeare and enlisted Laurence Olivier to help her achieve her dream. Monroe was determined to revamp her image and prove herself as a serious actress according to tapes former Los Angeles prosecutor John W. Miner claims to have made for the late star's psychiatrist shortly before her death in 1962. According to the recordings Monroe had already spoken to legendary method acting coach Lee Strasberg and Olivier about her plans. Miner's transcript reads: "I'll take a year of day and night study at Shakespeare with Lee Strasberg. I'll pay him to work only with me. He said I could do Shakespeare. I'll make him prove it. That will give me the basics Olivier wanted. Then I'll go to Olivier for the help he promised. Then I'll produce and act in the Marilyn Monroe Shakespeare Film Festival. 6 pages, quarto unknown‎

Born on October 3 1929 in Brooklyn NY Stern taught himself how to take photographs as a youth. Over the course of his career Stern changed the landscape of fashion and advertising photography by creating dynamic stand-alone images that no longer existed simply to serve the text. He emerged alongside Richard Avedon Mark Shaw and Irving Penn as a pioneer of this new confrontational style. Stern died at the age of 83 on June 26 2013 in New York NY. ‎MONROE, Marilyn; MAILER, Norman; SCHILLER, Lawrence‎

‎Marilyn‎

‎New York: Grosset & Dunlap Inc. 1973. Marilyn"<br /> Norman Mailer's Lavish Tribute to Hollywood's Most Enduring Icon<br /> Signed by Norman Mailer and Lawrence Schiller<br /> <br /> MONROE Marilyn. Marilyn a Biography by Norman Mailer. Pictures by the world's foremost photographers. New York: Grosset & Dunlap 1973. <br /> <br /> First Edition First Printing Stated. Quarto 10 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches; 267 x 235 mm. 2 signed leaf verso blank 1-270 1 1 blank pp. Photographic illustrations throughout many in full color. <br /> <br /> Publisher's padded white silk front cover with title in blind spine lettered in blank marbled endpapers. A fine copy. Housed in the publisher's black cloth clamshell case inset photograph on front panel marbled paper lining near fine.<br /> <br /> A sumptuous and visually arresting tribute to Marilyn Monroe combining Norman Mailer's speculative and highly personal meditation on Monroe's life with one of the richest assembled collections of Marilyn photography ever published. Produced on a grand scale and lavishly illustrated throughout the volume captures the mythic transformation of Norma Jeane Mortenson into perhaps the defining American cultural icon of the twentieth century.<br /> <br /> Mailer's text - part biography part cultural essay part psychological portrait - deliberately avoids the conventions of traditional biography. As Mailer himself acknowledged much of the narrative was constructed through intuition and imaginative reconstruction creating not merely a life of Monroe but an exploration of celebrity sexuality vulnerability and fame in postwar America.<br /> <br /> The extraordinary photographic content remains the book's greatest achievement. Drawn from the work of many of the twentieth century's leading photographers - including Richard Avedon Cecil Beaton Eve Arnold Philippe Halsman Bert Stern and Milton Greene - the images chronicle Monroe's evolution from studio contract player to international phenomenon. Together they form one of the most important visual archives devoted to Marilyn Monroe ever issued in book form.<br /> <br /> This signed limited issue elegantly bound and preserved in its original clamshell case is among the most desirable presentations of Mailer's celebrated Monroe volume - a striking fusion of Hollywood glamour photographic history and American literary celebrity.<br /> <br /> Marilyn Monroe; born Norma Jeane Mortenson 1926-1962 was an American actress model and singer. Known for playing comic "blonde bombshell" characters she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s as well as an emblem of the era's sexual revolution. She was a top-billed actress for a decade and her films grossed $200 million equivalent to $2 billion in 2024 by the time of her death in 1962. Long after her death Monroe remains a pop culture icon. In 1999 the American Film Institute ranked her as the sixth-greatest female screen legend from the Golden Age of Hollywood.<br /> <br /> Nachem Malech Mailer 1923-2007 known by his pen name Norman Kingsley Mailer was an American novelist journalist playwright and filmmaker. In a career spanning over six decades Mailer had eleven best-selling books at least one in each of the seven decades after World War II. Mailer's 1973 biography of Monroe usually designated Marilyn: A Biography was not approached as a traditional biography. Mailer read the available biographies watched Monroe's films and looked at photographs of Monroe; for the rest of it Mailer stated "I speculated. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, Inc., 1973 unknown‎
