The Lost Legion
Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company Inc. Very Good in Near Fine dj. 1980. First Edition. Hardcover. 0385148283 . light remainder spray and one small light stain on bottom edge of text block otherwise a solid clean book with minimal shelfwear; jacket is quite nice with some very minor surface-scuffing to the front panel almost-invisible half-inch closed tear at bottom rear flap-foldover. endpaper maps "A novel of the Roman Empire" a "stirring tale of adventure and romance whose setting reaches from the hills of Rome to the limits of the known world in the age of the Emperor Caligula. A crack Roman legion fallen into disfavor with the mad Emperor has been sent on a seemingly impossible quest: the follow the routes of the silk trade deep into Asia and there recover the standard of the Lost Legion a Roman army that disappeared without a trace on that frontier one hundred years before." Described in the jacket blurb as the author's "first major novel" although it's allowed that he'd previously written a number of obviously-not-major fantasy tales. He did have an interesting career trajectory: after a decade or so producing fantasy and horror stories for "Weird Tales" in the 1920s and 1930s he then more or less abandoned writing for several decades. "The Lost Legion" turned out to be not only his first major novel but also his last since he died the year after its publication. . Doubleday & Company, Inc. hardcover

The Werewolf Of Ponkert
Providence The Grandon Company 1958. First Edition. Hard Cover. 138 p. â€First Edition Limited To 350 Copies†Dedicated to Howard Philips Lovecraft. â€Harold Warner Munn is one of those authors whose work dates back to the splendid early history of Weird Tales magazine. The Werewolf of Ponkert first appeared in July 1925 when that magazine was slightly over two years old. Mr. Munn himself remembers that the story was inspired by a letter from H.P. Lovecraft which was published in Weird Tales. H.P.L. asked--and this was prior to the meeting of the two writers--why someone had not attempted a werewolf story as narrated by the werewolf himself.†from the Introduction by Donald M. Grant. Inscribed by the author. Vg although it does look as if the werewolf slobbered some blood on the back cover. NUC1956-67 RL M175801 RPB and CtY Lovecraft H.P. 1890-1947.
