DERVISH: The Rise And Fall Of An African Empire
Pen and Sword. New. 'Dervish' is the vivid and colorful story of one of the more remarkable episodes in the 'high Empire' period of British history. The Mahdi's rising in the Sudan in the 1880s starting as a localized Holy War against the 'decadent' Turkish/Egyptian overlords engulfed a million square miles of arid territory and forced the British Liberal Government to get involved after the early disasters of the Hicks expedition and Gordon's death at Khartoum. The narrative which makes excellent use of the first-hand diaries and reports including those of Rider Haggard's brother Andrew and of Father Ohrwalder the Austrian missionary who spent ten years of captivity in the Mahdi's camp brilliantly describes the growth and strength of the Mahdist movement and the extraordinary devotion and discipline of the Dervish troops. Facing such opponents with stoic endurance were the British Egyptian and Sudanese Negro soldiers and the resulting military engagements evoked amazing feats of courage and derring-do on both sides. The Dervish Empire outlasted the Mahdi by thirteen years. It ended in the battle of Omdurman and Kitchener's reconquest of the Sudan which was well supported by Reginald Wingate's military intelligence operations. It lasted a comparatively brief span of time but it had been established at the expense not only of the neighboring Abyssinians but also of the European white man at a time when Britain was approaching the zenith of its imperial power.returncharacterreturncharacter returncharacterreturncharacter REVIEWS returncharacterreturncharacter".vivid and colorful story of one of the more remarkable episodes in the "high Empire" period of British history.makes excellent use of the first hand diaries and reports.brilliantly describes the growth and strength of the Madhi movement and the extraordinary devotion and discipline of the Dervish troops." . 2010. Field Marshal Earl Haig
Cassell 2003. Reprint. Medium Trade Paperback. Good. 296 pages. Covers have no creasing. Spine has minor lean and moderate reading creases. Edges of pages are slightly foxed. Pages are lightly tanned. The commander of the British forces on the Western Front from late 1915 to the end of the First World War Haig has been reviled and revered in equal measure. Often critical of Haig Philip Warner's biography is nonetheless scrupulously fair. The portrait that emerges is of a flawed but courageous individual who almost certainly achieved as much as anyone could have done under the circumstances. Haig withstood the strain of high command at hideous personal cost and was ultimately ground down by the burden. As Warner reveals Haig probably hastened his own premature death by the energy with which he dedicated himself to the welfare of his former soldiers. Quantity Available: 1. London England: The Bodley Head. Near Fine/Very Good. 1991. First Edition. Cloth. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall 0370313216 Hardback First Edition Hardback Field Marshal Earl Haig illustrated with Photas and Maps 296pp296 pp. 13 photo-plates maps. 22 x 14cm. NR FINE. Douglas Haig is probably the most controversial figure in British military history with opinions amongst historians and biographers still widely divided. This new biography is neither a eulogy or a condemnation: it sets out to assess objectively the task Haig faced and what measure of success he achieved. In doing so the author traces the development of the man who by 1917 commanded the largest army Britain had ever put in the field over two million men. No previous commander had ever held such a powerful position or ever oversaw such enormous casualties.
