Kitchener: The Man Behind the Legend
Atheneum 1986. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition. A very nice copy. Jacket spine lightly toned. 1986 Hard Cover. viii 247 pp. Horatio Herbert Kitchener 1st Earl of Khartoum and of Broome was Britain's last great military hero a legend in his own time and in ours. His face became known to millions before his death in 1916 because it appeared on recruiting posters for World War I over the caption Your Country Needs You. Trained as an engineer in the army his talents were for planning organization and attention to detail yet his appetite was for battle. As a young officer in 1871 he very nearly created an international incident by secretly going off to take part in the conflict between France and Germany in which England was neutral. And later when he was in Cyprus making a survey of the land he took sick leave and made straight for Egypt where hostilities were building into a small war. He also played a major part in the victory against the Boers in South Africa. Kitchener's ambition was all for his country and his travels as a surveyor for the army in many foreign countries had made him believe that British influence was good and that the strengthening and extension of British influence was essential for world harmony. It was therefore the crowning moment of his career when he was asked to return to Britain as Secretary of State for War. Such a position would constitute a joining of his prodigious talents for organization with his enormous ambition for his country. When he came home his countrymen breathed a collective sigh of relief. They trusted him and believed in him and as he fulfilled all hope and expectation he became a great hero. His untimely death in 1916 while he was bound for Russia where he'd been asked to help organize against the coming revolution when his ship hit a mine in an unswept channel stunned the nation. This lucid and exceptionally readable book was written with the full consent of Kitchener's family. KITCHENER: THE MAN BEHIND THE LEGEND.
Hamish Hamilton London 1985 first edition. 247 pp large 8vo 9 1/2" H hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0241115876 B&w photographs map/battle plans reproductions. "Kitchener was one of the most successful and far-sighted generals Britain has ever had and his reputation was worldwide. But he has always been a mystery. Legends proliferated about him in his lifetime and the circumstances of his death have remained an enigma. Not until recently with the fresh material which has come to light has it been possible to find the re al person behind that enormous intimidating moustache. In this absorbing and percipient study we begin to realise what a debt Britain owes to Kitchener. Far from being the remote austere figure of the placards he was a daring adventurer a n d s p y a meticulous planner and perfectionist and a commander who took his place in the forefront of the battle in order to know exactly what was happening. Like modern generals Kitchener believed that battles should be won before they ar e f ou gh t an d proved that small well-organized armies could defeat vastly superior forces. In the Sudan he defeated his enemy in a final searing battle; in South Africa he fought an entirely different campaign in which he methodically remov ed al l h is en em y's advantages. Setbacks only spurred him to greater efforts. He was trusted by civilians; worshipped by his soldiers; and detested by most of his officers. When he became Commander-in-Chief in India he had no war to fight b ut he l eft the ar my in g ood shape for when its time came. His talent as a planner was great and much thought was given to thwarting the Russian ambitions in Afghanistan. In the end the Soviets did not invade that country until sixty years aft er his d eath . A nd a lth ough in company with Churchill he is blamed for the Dardanelles disaster recent disclosures of the limitations of contemporary naval gunnery have shown that the real blame lay elsewhere. In this book Warner investi gat es the pers onal myths as well a s the public man; Kitchener's dislike of politicians and the stormy episodes this caused later in his career; the fact that he never married because his intended bride died suddenly at the age of eighteen he w as n ot homo sexual ; hi s abil ity to find friends among the ranks of his enemies as well as enemies among his friends; and what lay behind his untimely death in 1916." Dust jacket has been price-clipped has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine very light rubbingslight fading to spine color. Very Good/Very Goo d. Men-At-Arms: Japanese Army of World War II
London UK: Osprey Publishing 1973. 40 Pages with Black/White Photos and Colour Plates. In 1941 the Allied forces in the Pacific were devastatingly unprepared for the onslaught of the Japanese Army which by this time had been fighting for ten years on the Manchurian front. The Allies paid dearly for their lack of planning and found themselves defeated time and time again as the seasoned Japanese forces swept through the Pacific colonies. This book examines the Japanese concept of war and describes the organisation tactics and weaponry of the Japanese Army from their triumphant invasions of 1941-42 until their ultimate defeat in 1945. Numerous illustrations and colour plates depict the weapons and uniforms of the Japanese troops in vivid detail. First Edition. Soft Cover. Good/No Jacket. Osprey Publishing
