TOWNSEND WARNER, Sylvia; [GILI, Phillida]
King Duffus: And other poems
Wells Somerset: Privately printed; Clare Son & Co. Limited printers 1968. Stiff card wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION. Side-stapled booklet pp. 20. Original blue wrappers lettered in black. Unevenly darkened staples rusty. Else clean. Very good. Unusual in both the trade and British research libraries: Jisc LSD locates four copies BL Goldsmiths NLS & UoReading Museum of English Rural Life. A very good copy of STW's rare final poetry collection also with a flavour of witchcraft which opens: "When all the witches were haled to the stake and burned; When their least ashes were swept up and drowned King Duffus opened his eyes and looked round"; from the collection of British artist Phillida Gili daughter of Reynolds Stone and Janet Woods without inscription. As with many friends VA bequeathed Gili books from her library see items 15-17. King Duffus of Scotland 930-966; King of Alba 962-966 was the earliest recorded 'victim' of witchcraft: "A company of hags roasted his image made of wax upon a wooden spit reciting certain words of enchantment and basting the figure with a poisonous liquor." Sharpe 1884. As expected STW offers an alternative version of his reawakening. Russell & Lawrence Mitchell 32a; Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe Esq. 1884 A Historical Account of the Belief in Witchcraft in Scotland. London: Hamilton Adams & co. Privately printed; Clare, Son & Co. Scenes of Childhood: And other stories
London: Chatto & Windus 1981. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt. Pushing to spine ends top edge spotted. Else clean and tight. Clipped review by Kathleen Nott laid in. In John Woodcock's vibrant typographical dust jacket: spine ends gently creased. Very good/ near fine A pleasing copy of this posthumously published collection of STW stories including two previously unpublished titles 'Siegfried on the Rhine' and 'In Pimlico'; the collection "in part recaptures or reflects personal and public events in the author's lifetime and experience" and is according to Nott "consistently and exhaustingly funny —I haven't as we said in my childhood laughed so much since Grandpa died. The whole lot must be read — and will be — in one unbroken sitting". An abundance of poodles features. Russell & Lawrence Mitchell 36a Chatto & Windus hardcover

TOWNSEND WARNER, Sylvia
T. H. White: A Biography with two ALS by the author
1967. London: Jonathan Cape with Chatto & Windus 1967. 8vo. original brick-red publisher's cloth backstrip lettered in gilt; upper edge black; in the original unclipped jacket with a photograph of white to the upper panel and facsimile letter to the lower; pictorial endpapers; pp. vii 8-352; faint pushing to spine tips and offsetting to endleaves else a near-fine copy in the very good dust jacket slightly rubbed at tips and sun bleached to spine. First edition. Warner was given access to White's papers shortly after his death in 1964. Her biography was regarded by the New York Times as """"a small masterpiece which may well be read long after the writings of its subject have been forgotten.""sold with Two autograph letters signed by Townsend addressed to a Mr John da Silva. The first dated 20th October 1964 is a letter in which she having been asked to write a biography of T. H. White reaches out to Mr da Silva a former school pupil of the great Arthurian writer. ""I should be extremely grateful to have your impressions of him at this stage in his career"" she writes. ""He wrote in his various books about all his activities - except teaching. he must have been a remarkable and stimulating teacher."" The reply from da Silva comes just over a month letter in the form of two typed sheets recounting his memories of being at school in the master's company. ""I remember him with great affection"" the letter begins before recounting many different experiences during the inter-war years between 1934-5. ""We were Tim's original 'tutees'. Because the group was so small lessons with him used to take place in his study a shady room overlooking the Orangery at Stowe with two big square stuffed chairs side by side facing the fireplace book shelves around the room and pipes and tobacco I seem to remember in considerable profusion on the tables. Tim was very like the self-portrait of Van Gogh wearing a hat."" He goes on: ""Tim was then I suppose in his late twenties and a fairy Bohemian figure even by Stowe standards which were not noticeably strict. He had an old open black Bentley and a red setter and among the boys enjoyed a reputation exciting faintly discreditable and much envied on the strength of 'Loved Helen' and 'They Winter Abroad' copies of which were eagerly sought after."" da Silva goes on to describe two incidences where White was involved in car accidents. In the first he drove through the front wall of a cottage; in the other da Silva was the one driving and after sharing several drinks in a nearby pub ""I inexpertly skidded on the cattle grid. the ensuing bump threw him White forward so he hit his head on the knob of the windscreen wiper cutting himself slightly. He made a terrible fuss about it."" Warner's response to these elucidations is also included. Dated in the early January of the following year she writes: ""I was greatly interested in your story of the cattle grid. It is typical of him. in major misfortunes he could be heroic - though not invariably but what authentic character is consistent"" An illuminating series of letters together with the biography of this important writer by an English novelist who herself was equally well regarded. hardcover

TOWNSEND WARNER, Sylvia; [FOSTER, Bo]; [PEERS, Roger]
The Espalier
London: Chatto & Windus 1925. Cloth. Good. FIRST UK EDITION BO FOSTER'S COPY. 8vo. Original blue and black mottled cloth green paper title label to spine. Fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Head cap frayed uneven fading to boards paper label rubbed blank. Edges tobacco-toned. "EHMF"oster = Bo" added in pencil London 36" in blue ink and a bold hand to ffep fawn book label of "Roger Neville Russ Peers" to front pastedown. Heavy foxing to front and rear lighter throughout strong pencil lines marking a number of poems especially 'Nelly Trim' spine cracked inconsequentially at gathering D. One-page hand-written list of book titles titled 'Roger Peers' mostly relating to Dorset laid in. Good An unusual double association copy of STW's first poetry collection owned first by Bo Foster an important early lover of Valentine Ackland's and later by Roger Peers Curator of the Dorset County Museum 1959-1992 late friend of STW and saviour of her personal library and papers many of which were transferred to the Museum; in establishing its STW and VA collections he played a crucial role in ensuring both women's cultural legacies. Valentine Ackland met Eleanor 'Bo' Foster when she was 17; the older woman "completed the younger's education both culturally and sexually and encouraged her poetic ambitions". Foster was VA's most significant lover before STW featuring as 'X' in her posthumously published memoir For Sylvia 1985. Intriguingly Foster initialled and dated this copy of STW's first book five years after her painful break-up with Ackland shortly after the younger poet began her lifelong relationship with STW. Fleeing the Blitz a few years later Foster elected to move to Dorset with her brother buying a house just two miles away from Frome Vauchurch where VA and STW lived. The former lovers became reacquainted during the 1950s and by Ackland's death Foster was able to send such frank commiserations to STW as: "What can I say Nothing adequate — I loved V.A. and bless you for giving her 40 years of peace & happiness" Stinton 2008. A prominent curator Roger Peers 1932-2023 was also Secretary of the Dorset Natural History & Archaeological Society DNHAS through which he met STW. The elderly author granted Peers "the chance to choose for the collection of DNHAS which owns the Dorset County Museum any books from the library in her house at Frome Vauchurch and also for myself" Peers 2017. Peers also retrieved manuscripts of STW's musical compositions from rubbish bags. As the laid-in list suggests alongside titles by STW and Valentine Ackland Peers' own book collection with its distinctive Dorset flavour boasted a large number of Ackland's copies of Thomas Hardy titles a number inscribed to her from STW.
