Boston and Cambridge: James Munroe and Company 1857. First Edition . Embossed Brown Cloth. Very Good. 276 pp. First edition 1857 on title page. Caldwell born 1823 is cited in Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography 1887-1889 for this book for other poetry and translations and for over 50 poems set to music and published in John Tuft's "Normal School Course." Caldwell published in many newspapers of the period this book representing a selection up to 1857.See Godey's Ladies Book 1857; North American Review 1857 " We should be unjust to a little volume which has given us unusual pleasure if we did not demand for it the attention which volumes of poetry in our day so seldom gain. Mr. Caldwell brings together here a collection of poems written evidently under many different phases of feeling and showing not only an easy command of language but delicate taste a quick and accurate sense of the beauties of nature very charming home affection and the fancy which melts and mingles all these themes into poetry. There are some admirable translations from the German. The lyric poems especially please us for they really seem to belong to the very limited class of modern lyrics that can be sung." His 10/20/45 letter to Edgar Allen Poe is available in the archives of the Edgar Allen Poe Society of Baltimore. This copy inscribed to the author's grandson Laurence Chaffee Holden and dated Christmas 1896; Laurence Holden's mother was Alice Caldwell Holden who was deceased at the time the book was inscribed. Three photographs- of Alice her home and children- are pasted in neatly. This was almost certainly once the author's own copy.

James Munroe and Company hardcover
