(Thayer, James Bradley).
A WESTERN JOURNEY WITH MR. EMERSON.
141 p. Dampstain. Title page torn without loss. 165mm. Virtually disbound. This perhaps should best be considered a candidate for rebinding. First edition. "James Bradley Thayer (1831-1902) was a Boston attorney, legal scholar, and professor at Harvard University. He had business dealings with Emerson and was one of a party of twelve who, with Emerson, went in a private Pullman car from Boston to California, and travelled there for several weeks, in 1871. Thayer wrote a number of diary-like letters to his wife while on the trip which later formed the basis for this account. This book also contains the letter that Thayer had written to the Boston 'Daily Advertiser' in which he attempts to clarify the response to a recent (1883) Boston lecture on Emerson given by Matthew Arnold." - From a description by Riverrow Book Shop. TELEPHONES CHICAGO Descriptive Circular of the Multiple Switch Board for Telephone Exchanges Made by the Western Electric Company
Chicago: Rand McNally & Co 1883. Softcover. Very good. Large octavo 16pp. plus folding illustration at rear. A very good copy in the original printed wrappers with some splitting at the spine and a few nicks but overall sound. The folding plate is in excellent condition. It shows a detailed image of the "Multiple Switch Board for Indianapolis." In 1881 just two years before this pamphlet was produced Alexander Graham Bell purchased the Western Electric Company which scholars have described as a crucial step in the standardization of telephone technology and equipment. Just a few years earlier telephone conversations could only be had between rented pairs of phones attached by a line that had no way to connect to other telephones. The switchboard allowed for operators to manually move connections between lines so that anyone with a telephone could call anyone else with a telephone-at least locally-and the technology rapidly improved from then on. Quite scarce with none in the auction record and just two separately catalogued listings in OCLC NYHS Duke. . Rand, McNally & Co unknown

19 cent Women Education Western Female Seminary Catalog
Women's Education Movement. Western Female Seminary Catalog 1868-1869
Women's Education Movement. Western Female Seminary Catalog 1868-1869. Oxford OH. Western Female Seminary was founded in 1853 as a daughter school of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley Massachusetts. Its first principal Helen Peabody and most of the early faculty had been students and teachers at Mount Holyoke. Mary Lyon Residence Hall on the Western campus is named for Mount Holyok's founder Mary Lyon. It later received a charter and became Western College an all-female institution. Women's colleges proliferated in the mid- to late- 19th century to fill the void created by their exclusion from most institutions of higher education. The prevailing notion that women were too delicate for a rigorous academic education was openly challenged when Elizabeth Cady Stanton spoke at the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 "Man's intellectual superiority cannot be a question until woman has had a fair trial. When we shall have had our colleges our professions our trades for a century a comparison then may be justly instituted." Young women were quick to step up to the challenge; as quickly as female colleges opened they filled up. No copy could be found among Institutional or library Collections according to OCLC Worldcat.

Women's Academy and Seminary Archive recording the first important movement of women into higher education in the United States seminary was synonymous with "academy" and did not have the religious connotation of today. In the 1800's the Female Academy and Seminary Movement transformed American educational norms allowing women the opportunity to receive secular non-religious college-level education. When we shall have had our colleges our professions our trades for a century a comparison then may be justly instituted." 1990 Copper Canyon Commemorative Committee
50 Fifty Years Logging At Copper Canyon: 1940-1990 Chemainus Valley Vancouver Island
Canada: P.C.A.V.F. Fine. 1990. First Edition. Paperback. "Exciting events and dramatic changes have occurred during the first 50 years of logging the Chemainus River valley. The outstanding achievements of the operation were accomplished by the superb efforts of all those who have worked there. The long term plan to continue producing high quality logs at 1990 production levels or higher on a sustained yield basis will undoubtedly require as many changes in the next 50 years as we have seen in the past history of the operation. We trust that someone will pictorially record these changes so that those reviewing the history of copper Canyon in 2040 after a century of production can smile as we do today at the inefficiencies of our early efforts." - page 2. 44 pages. Printed upon glossy stock profusely illustrated with high-quality black and white reproductions of archival photos. Many photos include workers who are named. Undated second printing of the 1990 first edition probably circa 1990. Clean bright and unmarked with trivial wear. An excellent copy. ; Cover Illustration; 4to . P.C.A.V.F. paperback
