Includes the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Cape Verdes.One of the most detailed and scientifically accurate maps of the region published at the beginning of the 18th Century.Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son and pupil of the cartographer Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Jean (Johannes) Covens and Corneille (Cornelius) Mortier were brothers-in-law, who carried on the book publishing business established by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam in 1685. Pierre Mortier's company owed much of its success to his access to French publishers, whose publications he re-issued in handsome editions. The elder Mortier died in 1711; his wife continued the firm until she died in 1719. In 1721, Covens and Mortier formed a partnership, Covens having married Agatha Mortier in the same year. They continued the business by publishing enlarged editions of Sanson, Jaillot, and De L'Isle, as well as some of the later Dutch cartographical masters such as De Wit and Allard, and of course Pierre Mortier.This map is from an edition of De L'Isle entitled, Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Toutes Les Parties Du Monde, Ou sont exactement Remarquées les Empires, Monarchies, Royaumes, Etats, Republiques &c. Par Guillaume de l'Isle. Premier Géographe de sa Majesté. It delineates the island in great detail. At the time the map was made, the coastal areas were ruled by the Dutch East Indian Company, who were undoubtedly responsible for the soundings indicated around the island and for mapping the roads depicted. Contains sixteen separate programs from the 1957/58 Overture Concert Association season varying from 1-4 pp. each. Comb binding cracked and broken with some fingers missing all programs in fine unmarked condition. Includes an early concert program for the Duo-Pianists Melvin Stecher and Norman Horowitz who ".are now 26 and 25 years old respectively." from the program. Since starting in the 1950's the duo became world famous and went on to found the The Stecher and Horowitz Foundation and The Stecher and Horowitz School of the Arts in New York. The Overture Concert Association was a "Vancouver-based concert agency founded in 1955 by George Zukerman to present live performances in small or remote Canadian centres. The association began with four concerts in Nelson BC on a budget of $1800. By l977 over 5000 concerts with a total budget of $4.5 million in artists' fees had been presented in some 70 communities in western Canada the Arctic and as far east as northern Ontario." Très belle lettre à un écrivain français, le troisième qui souhaitait traduire son ouvrage The Virginian. Il demande l'éditeur et lui conseil « de lire les quatre ou cinq premiers chapitres du Virginian et alors demander à [lui-même] si cela ne serait sans aucun effet dans une traduction française », précisant ainsi : « à mon avis, quand un roman a pour ses personnage des gens du monde ou bien des bourgeois, cela peut être rendu dans toute langue civilisée. Mais quand il s'agit des paysans, des êtres et des faits primitifs, alors l'art a des frontières fort infranchissables ». Il prend ainsi des exemples : Mon frère Yves, Pêcheur d'Islande, et dit encore sur son roman : « il hérisse avec des mots et des phrases fantasques et falots qui sont le souffle et le sang des Rocky Mountain cowboys, et qui me semble absolument indicibles hors de leur propre langue et leur pays sauvage ». Some minor soiling on cards some images slightly faded. Very good. Archivally matted protected with a mylar sheet. An excellent collection of views quite early for Hawaii and New Zealand. The four views of Honolulu include one wide view of the town a view of a side street with a church steeple in the background the Pali mountain pass and the harbor with several large vessels at anchor. In New Zealand the Supreme Court building in Christchurch and the city of Littleton are displayed. The San Francisco images include the Palace Hotel and the famous Cliff House. Of particular interest are the three views of the Central Pacific Railway. The sections of the track include Capestown the Palisade and Summit Station each with fresh evidence of the line's recent completion. Also in the collection is one image of a railroad along the banks of Salt Lake and three wide views of Salt Lake City one with the Mormon tabernacle completed in 1871 prominently featured. An attractive collection of views each quite displayable. unknown
