Victoria BC: Orca Book Publishers. Paperback. 920501303 156 pages. "Few British Columbians will be able to study this dictionary without being reminded of the way their fathers uncles and grandfathers spoke about things. The words ring true to the days when we were hewers of wood and drawers of water and saw nothing particularly wrong with such tasks even rating them as more honourable than such modern pursuits as enforcing laws against solitaire players who cheat. Preverves almost 700 words which over the years have helped the people of this province to understand it themselves and their neighbours." - from Foreward. Moderate wear. Unmarked. Binding sound. PARLIAMENT OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA WELLS Lawrence Allen
Journal of the Calvert Scientific Exploring Expedition 1896-7: Equipped at the Request and Expense of Albert F. Calvert Esq. F.R.G.S. London for the purpose of exploring the remaining blanks of Australia
Perth: Government Printer. 1902. Folio 62 pp. with a large folding lithographic map measuring 890 x 648 mm. an excellent copy half crimson morocco with gilt lettering by Sangorski. Official account of the scientific expedition financed by the wealthy English traveller Albert Calvert dispatched 'for the purpose of exploring the remaining blanks of Australia'. Lawrence Allen Wells 1883-1932 was an Australian born surveyor who rose to prominence for continuing the work of the Elder Scientific Expedition after it collapsed under the leadership of David Lindsay. Accurate and understated Wells won the esteem of the Adelaide scientific community and attracted the attention of Albert Calvert who insisted that Wells lead his expedition. Accompanied by his cousin Charles Wells and other scientific companions the Calvert Expedition of 1896 passed through the Murchison goldfields and headed north to the Fitzroy River. At Midway Well the party split intending to meet at Joanna Spring some 300 kilometres to the north. The first group led by Wells' cousin perished in the attempt. Unable to locate Joanna Spring incorrectly mapped by 30 kilometres to the east by Warburton some years earlier the second group barely survived an incomprehensible 13 day march of some 220 kilometres over sand hills with no water before reaching the safety of Noonkanbah station on the Fitzroy River.
