This a very good softcover copy of The 1st Great Western Teddy Bear Show & Gathering + the 2nd Great Western Teddy Bear Show & Gathering, with just light wear (paper-clip impression to the top edge of the cover of 1st show). Completely clean inside and out. The 1st Great Western Teddy Bear Show was held in 1983. The 2nd Great Western Teddy Bear Show was held in 1984. The theme of the 1st show was 'Mechanical Bears'. The theme of the 2nd show was 'An American Salute to Sieff'. Both volumes are illustrated in black & white, and have full lists of the exhibitors at each show. A few advertisements scattered through each catalog. Each catalog has an essay of several pages on its' theme by Bob Collins. 8" square, 36 & 60 pages. Scarce catalogs. Washington DC: U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service WPA and CCC 1941. First Edition. Both volumes of this complete two volume set are in very good and near fine conditions. Both are small quartos of 10 1/4 by 7 3/4 inches bound in adhesive bindings in light brown cloth covered boards with darker brown text on the spines and front boards. The cloth at the head and heel of volume I is rubbed and worn and the upper fore corners of the front and rear boards are bumped but professionally straightened and strengthened. Volume II shows only light wear to the cloth at the head of the spine and the text block for this volume was made from two-hole punched paper. Volume I is made from standard un-holed paper. Both volumes contain four index tabs each. In volume I: Northwest Inland States; Pacific States; Yellowstone; and Yosemite; Volume II: Central States Southwestern National Monuments; Southwestern States; and Territorial Parks and Monuments. These two volumes contain 664 pages of bibliographies on 79 national parks and national monuments each one with its own pagination. This bibliography is not listed in any of the WPA or American Guide resources held by Town's End Books. OCLC locates only five institutions owning the book version of this title. The forward contained in volume I mentions that this project started in 1936 with: where "much credit is due Mrs. Hazel Hunt Voth for originally laying out the program and directing it until her resignation in April 1939." Hazel Voth's other other major accomplishment was A Bibliography of Yellowstone National Park which is reprinted in this set. Small blank forecorner chipping to first leaf lightly spotted else Very Good. <br/><br/> This rare Petition-- from Pennsylvania settlers on lands in Luzerne Northumberland and Northampton Counties claimed by Connecticut-- reviews the history of the Western Land Dispute between Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Examined in detail are the 1782 judicial decree terminating the rights of the State of Connecticut but not rights of private claimants the litigation brought by Connecticut claimants and attempts of the Pennsylvania Legislature to adjust those claims. Disliking the adjustment the settlers here request federal intervention. The Committee Report and the Vote on the Question rejecting the settlers' request are printed here. <br/> Bristol and Shipton call this an 1800 imprint; this is impossible because the Petition refers to events in February 1801. NAIP which records only 18th century American imprints does not list it. American Imprints says it was printed in 1802. <br/>FIRST EDITION. AI 2874 1. Bristol 11109. Shipton & Mooney 49135. WHEREAS AT A GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT HOLDEN AT NEW-HAVEN ON THE SECOND THURSDAY OF OCTOBER 1796 AN ACT WAS PASSED FOR INCORPORATING THE PROPRIETORS OF THE HALF MILLION ACRES OF LAND LYING SOUTH OF LAKE ERIE WHICH ACT IMPOWERED THE AGENTS OF SAID PROPRIETORS IN GENERAL MEETING ASSEMBLED TO LAY TAXES ON SAID PROPRIETORS AND TO APPOINT THE TIMES WHEN PAYABLE; AND ALSO IMPOWERED THE COLLECTORS OF SAID PROPRIETORS TO MAKE SALE OF THE RIGHTS OF SUCH PARTS THEREOF AS SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT TO DISCHARGE THE TAX OR TAXES WHICH THE PROPRIETOR OR PROPRIETORS OF RIGHTS MIGHT NEGLECT OR REFUSE TO PAY.
Hartford 1799. Printed folio broadside 7-3/8" x 12-1/4" completed in manuscript and docketed in manuscript on verso. Old folds light foxing else Very Good. An evidently unrecorded document on Connecticut claims to the Western Reserve not located on ESTC OCLC or NAIP as of March 2017.<br/><br/> "A general meeting of the agents of said proprietors held at Hartford on the 17th May 1797" established a schedule of taxes. But Frances Bradley of Fairfield failed to pay. Thus on January 15 1798 her property was sold for the amount of unpaid taxes to Walter Terry of Fairfield. Lothrop Lewis of Fairfield the tax collector here officially transfers the property to Terry. His deed dated March 30 1799 is acknowledged on April 5 1799. Lothrop Lewis whose name is printed also signs in ink; witnesses were Lewis Sturges and Samuel Rowland. <br/> In 1786 Connecticut relinquished claims to land west of Pennsylvania except for the Western Reserve a portion of what is now south of Lake Erie in northeast Ohio. Connecticut assigned some of the Reserve to its citizens as compensation for losses suffered during the Revolution; and sold the rest to a consortium of Connecticut men including Moses Cleaveland who had formed the Connecticut Land Company. Their speculations were not successful there being no effective local government in the Reserve capable of unraveling the tangle of land titles. Thus taxes imposed were frequently not collected. To force payment of the tax on January 15 1798 Lothrop Lewis conducted the sales. Lewis Burr Sturges 1763-1844 born in Fairfield graduated from Yale was clerk of the Probate Court from 1787 to 1791 a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1794 to 1803; and a Federalist Congressman from 1805 to 1816. He spent his later years in Ohio. Samuel Rowland 1769-1837 was born in Fairfield admitted to the bar in 1794 was a lawyer and town clerk for 42 years and turnpike surveyor to the New York State line.
