‎Summary The Decapolis city of Jerash has long attracted attention from travellers and scholars, due both to the longevity of the site and the remarkable finds uncovered during successive phases of excavation that have taken place from 1902 onwards. Between 2011 and 2016, a Danish-German team, led by the universities of Aarhus and M nster, focused their attention on the Northwest Quarter of Jerash ? the highest point within the walled city ? and this volume is the sixth in a series of books presenting the team's final results. In this volume, a wide range of miscellaneous items discovered in the Northwest Quarter are presented, ranging from prehistoric lithics to Ottoman pipes. Material finds covered include stone sculpture, utensils, and inscriptions, as well as bone objects, spindle whorls, and bread stamps, while some scientific analyses of jewellery and terracotta figurines complement the studies. These chapters ensure that all finds from the Northwest Quarter ? no matter how small ? are made available to researchers, with the contributions gathered here offering unique new insights into the material groups from Gerasa, later Jerash, and into the lives of the population of the city from a longue dur e perspective. These images document Black participation in ranching and frontier life in the decades following emancipation when a significant proportion of working cowboys in the American West were African American. The photographs record both labor and self-presentation through an outdoor riding scene and a formal studio portrait providing evidence of how Black men and youth engaged with western occupations mobility and dress during a period when new economic opportunities emerged alongside persistent racial constraints. The material supports research into African American labor history western expansion and the social formation of Black life in the post-Civil War United States.<br /> <br /> Two photographs comprising one albumen print and one tintype each approximately 2.5 x 3.5 inches. The albumen image depicts a young African American boy mounted on a bucking horse holding a cowboy hat and riding crop dressed in a buttoned shirt trousers and lace-up boots; a tipi structure is visible in the background situating the scene within a western or plains environment. The tintype presents a studio portrait of a young African American man wearing a striped three-piece suit and a wide-brimmed hat associated with late nineteenth-century western fashion indicating the circulation of frontier dress within formal portrait settings. ‎Summary This volume brings together contributions concerning the figure of Irenaeus (ca 130-ca 200), a Christian author from Asia minor, Greek by language and culture, who spent the second part of his life "among the Celts", "in the neighbouring regions of the Rh ne", to use his own words. It seems quite probable that Irenaeus' route from East to West passed through Rome and that he stayed there for some time. Therefore the papers in this volume, by researchers of various origins, are grouped into three parts corresponding to these three geographical areas - Asia, Rome, Gaul - and their respective cultural contexts. Most of the papers adopt a general historical approach in exploring various dimensions of Irenaeus' context: cultural and literary life in Asia, especially in Smyrna; multilingualism in the Roman Empire; the attraction of Rome for scholars, philosophers and rhetoricians of Greek origin; the expansion of Lyon in the second century and the flourishing of its economic and cultural life. Other contributions focus on the contemporary presence of various religious components, in particular on Jewish traditions and on the vicissitudes and organization of the first Christian communities, with attention to Gnostic groups. The papers are preceded by an original biographical account of Irenaeus, newly proposed on the basis of indications provided by his own work.
