‎Rare exemplaire de l’arrêt du Parlement prononcé à l’encontre de Jean Châtel suite à sa tentative d’assassinat du roi Henri IV, annonçant à la fois son exécution et l’expulsion des Jésuites hors de France. Paris, Frederic Morel, 1595.Plaquette in-8 de 8 pp. Conservé dans une brochure postérieure de papier marbré. 169 x 100 mm.‎

‎Edition originale de l’arrêt rendu par le Parlement de Paris à l’encontre de Jean Châtel après sa tentative d’assassinat du roi Henri IV. Bulletin de la Librairie Morgand et Fatout 10767 ; Rosenthal 4254 ; Catalogue Peignot 2521 ; Le 27 décembre 1594 le roi Henri IV retournait victorieux de Picardie à Paris, et entrait dans la chambre de Gabrielle d’Estrées, sa maîtresse, rue Saint-Honoré. Plusieurs seigneurs s’y rendirent pour le saluer. Dans le moment où Henri IV se baissait pour relever un seigneur agenouillé devant lui, un jeune homme, qui s’était glissé dans la foule jusqu’auprès du roi, tenta de le poignarder ; mais le coup ne put l’atteindre qu’à la mâchoire supérieure, lui fendit la lèvre et lui rompit une dent. Ce jeune homme, nommé Jean Châtel, fils d’un bourgeois de Paris, avoua aussitôt son crime. Le roi voulait lui pardonner ; mais, instruit que l’assassin était élève des Jésuites, auxquels il venait de rendre un grand service en suspendant l’arrêt du parlement qui tendait à les chasser du royaume, il changea d’avis. Aussitôt Jean Châtel fut conduit au Fort-l’Evêque : sa famille ainsi que tous les jésuites de Paris furent pareillement arrêtés. Jean Châtel interrogé ne chargea point les jésuites, déclara qu’il avait agi de son propre mouvement ; qu’il n’avait été poussé à cet assassinat que par son zèle pour la religion, persuadé qu’il était permis de tuer les rois non approuvés par le pape. Jean Châtel fut condamné à mort le 29 décembre 1594 et écartelé place de Grève. Le même jour, le Parlement accuse les jésuites d’avoir commandité l’assassinat, et par le même arrest que Châtel fut condamné à être tiré à quatre chevaux, les jésuites furent expulsés hors de France. La Parlement déclara l’assassin atteint et convaincu du crime de lèse-majesté divine et humaine au premier chef, par le détestable parricide attenté sur la personne du roi. Pour réparation de son crime, l’arrêt le condamna à « faire amende honorable devant la principale porte de l’Eglise de Paris, nud en chemise, tenant une torche de cire ardente du poix de deux livres, & illec à genoux dire & declarer que malheureusement & proditoirement il a attenté le dit tres inhumain & tres abominable parricide : & blessé le Roy d’un cousteau en la face : &… estre mené & conduit en un tombereau en la place de Grève tenaillé aux bras & cuisses, & sa main dextre, tenant en icelle le cousteau duquel il s’est efforcé commettre ledit parricide, couppée. Et après, son corps tiré & démembré avec quatre chevaux, & ses membres & corps jettes au feu & consumes en cendres, & les cendres jettées au vent… » Cette pièce historique présente l’arrêt du Parlement prononcé à Jean Châtel juste avant son exécution, le jeudi 29 décembre 1594. Rare plaquette témoignant d’un événement majeur dans l’histoire de France et dans l’histoire des religions au XVIe siècle.‎

‎Ce règlement rédigé en 1750 et présenté à l'homologation le 26 juillet 1753 et ordonné en Parlement de Dijon le 7 août 1753 (Sirand, 2798) n'avait apparemment pas été publié ; 25 ans après, il l'est enfin. Ce règlement est divisé en 10 chapitres, le premier concerne les étrangers qui doivent justifier, entre autres, de leur religion ; le second règlemente les dimanches et fêtes et surtout les activités pendant le Service divin ! L'alimentation est soigneusement règlementée : la Grenette et les grains, les meuniers, le pain, les bouchers, les vins, les poids, mesures et marchés constituent les chapitres suivants ; enfin, l'hygiène publique, si importante, clot ce règlement très intéressant et révélateur des moeurs de l'époque.Bon exemplaire, augmenté de quelques notes manuscrites anciennes.‎

The lengthy list of church members includes the brother of famed explorer Stephen Harriman Long 1784-1864 ENOCH LONG his wife ABIGAIL LONG and other family members. Enoch long was a noted resident of Alton Illinois and noted early Alton settler who in 1837 headed a small militia unit whose job it was to protect abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy from the "angry mob." They failed and Lovejoy was shot dead. Though not so noted this pamphlet came from Enoch Long's personal papers. A delightful New England church item with an interesting background. Not in Sabin. Lower left corner of front board notes "No. 1925" as if one in a lengthy series of Biblical lessons. Entirely in German and seemingly of turn-of-the-century 1900 vintage. ‎Erste englische Ausgabe, fast zeitgleich mit der deutschen Erstausgabe erschienen. - NDB VI, 172 f: "Karl Friedrich Eugen Geldner (1852 - 1929) studierte Indologie und Awesta seit 1871 in Leipzig bei Brockhaus und Windisch, später in Tübingen bei Rudolf von Roth. In Tübingen wurde er auch 1875 promoviert und bereits 1876 habilitiert. Bei aller Bewunderung für den hohen wissenschaftlichen Rang der Persönlichkeit Roths ging Geldner andere Wege als sein Lehrer, besonders in der Betonung der scholastischen indischen Tradition in der Veda-Forschung. Roth wollte seinen Schüler besonders in der Awesta-Forschung ansetzen, obwohl es diesen weit mehr zum Veda zog. Als bedeutende Frucht von Geldners Awesta-Studien erschienen 1877 seine Preisaufgabe `Über die Metrik des jüngeren Awesta` und später vor allem seine große Ausgabe: `Awesta, the Sacred Books of the Parsis`, eine Edition, welche die alte von Westergaard ersetzte und Geldner bei den europäischen wie den parsischen Gelehrten hohes Ansehen eintrug". ? "After he had received his doctoral degree, Geldner was pressed by Roth to replace Westergaard?s edition of the Avesta with a revised edition. He himself would have preferred to work in the field of Vedic studies. He hoped to complete the task in a few years, but the mass of more than 120 manuscripts which had to be described and collated prolonged the work until 1895. ... an edition with prolegomena and apparatus also appeared in English: Avesta, the Sacred Books of the Parsis, 3 vols., Stuttgart, 1896, 1891 and 1896.
