"A Cursory but Free and Candid Examination of the Divine Authority of the Books Contained in the Old-Testament; with some Strictures on the Tenets of Those Called Orthodox-Christians."

Good. folio 5 ff. 163 5 pp. original manuscript bound in contemporary vellum front cover with title inked in early hand; binding darkened stained and rubbed with vellum cracked and peeling over spine. Sewing loosening; a number of leaves separated. Pages age-toned with minor offsetting edges of first few leaves tattered with the lower portion of title leaf chipped away. Apparently unpublished 18th century American manuscript dealing with natural religion the nature of prophecy and revelation and the definition of "real Christianity" vs. "Orthodoxy." The author seems to have been at least contemplating publication as a preliminary advertisement offers the usual disclaimer regarding a work "never intended. for the Eye of the Public" that might yet "accidentally fall into private Hands" of "Strangers." That advertisement is signed "W. D." with "America 1773." Supplied below in a slightly smaller finer lettering; text on p. 112 refers in passing to "this 28th Dec.r 1773." References to "modern" or current events are slim to nonexistent; but Liebnitz appears unfavorably. The author also cites more approvingly Drs. Clarke Sherlock and Burnet - along with "Machiavel" on the nature of governments. Gil Blas is mentioned as a history that might be viewed as truth by the credulous ages hence; Shaftesbury Voltaire and Locke are treated of in the last pages. The text is reasonably but not excessively erudite there are occasional forays into Greek and Latin; the work's tone is often combative with the author's negative opinions of much Jewish philosophy and doctrine bluntly expressed. <br /> books

Dans toute religion, ou systeme de pensee, les detenteurs de l'autorite religieuse semblent occuper une place centrale dans la societe. On a analyse le fondement de cette autorite en articulant la problematique, dans la mesure du possible, autour de deux poles qui semblent souvent en tension : le charisme et la hierarchie, religieuse ou politique. Le pretendant au rang de chef charismatique doit se conformer a des modeles convenus. C'est la vox populi qui sanctionne sa reconnaissance en tant que tel. Le charisme postule, d'autre part, une personnalite hors du commun ainsi que des qualites spirituelles et electives. Le meme type de tension parcourt, de facon inverse, un corps clerical organise de facon hierarchique. L'ordre dans lequel son chef est susceptible de s'inserer doit obeir a ses propres regles institutionnelles, voire bureaucratiques de cooptation et, aussi, tenir compte de la ferveur populaire susceptible de contrarier cette logique institutionnelle interne. A travers des etudes de cas, les auteurs des contributions ici reunies examinent comment jouent ou non ces tensions qui peuvent tout aussi bien generer des crises que converger et concourir a la reproduction ou non d'un corps clerical dans des contextes de profonds changements sociaux. Grundlage dieser Edition waren zwei Handschriften. Die eine, der Codex Valentinianus, wird in der Kathedralbibliothek in Valencia, Spanien, als Codex 253 (fruher 178) aufbewahrt; die andere, der Codex Oxoniensis, als Codex Rawlinson A 368 in der Bodleian Library in Oxford. O enthalt noch eine zweite Streitschrift mit dem Titel Excerpta ex libris beati Augustini infidelitati Iudaeorum obviantia. Sie richtet sich gegen Juden, in Parallele zu Contra Philosophos abgekurzt Contra Iudaeos. Von dieser Schrift und Contra Philosophos hatte N. R. Ker schon 1969 eine zweite Handschrift beschrieben. Sie wird im British Museum London, Lincoln?s Inn, Hale 75, verwahrt. Als dem Editor der Codex Londiniensis im Jahre 1997 bekannt wurde, lag die Edition von Contra Iudaeos bereits in einem Korrekturausdruck vor. Da Professor D. Aschoff (Institutum Judaicum Delitzschianum, Munster) sich nach Abschluss der Edition schon anderen unaufschiebbaren Aufgaben zugewandt hatte, kam er erst nach langer Verzogerung dazu, die neue Handschrift einzuarbeiten. So wird die Edition von Contra Iudaeos erst uber drei Jahrzehnte nach Contra Philosophos vorgelegt. Languages: Latin, German.

These anonymous plays, found in a single luxury manuscript, comprise the only major corpus of dramatic works in French that have survived from the fourteenth century. They derive from a rich diversity of sources: narrative miracle accounts, saints' lives, epic chansons de geste, vernacular romances, and history. Each play is preceded by a richly detailed miniature, some two dozen include a sermon in prose, and each includes at least one rondel to be sung by the cortege accompanying the Virgin. They constitute both a collective demonstration of the fervent late-medieval devotion to the Virgin, and a substantial archive of contemporary insights into the issues of power, authority, and influence that struggled for dominance in fourteenth-century Paris. As this extraordinary collection has, in its entirety, attracted little critical attention to date, this volume will be of significant interest to scholars wishing to explore the plays in their literary context, as well as those interested in medieval drama, the Marian tradition, and the role of confraternities in fourteenth-century French culture. The Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Ravennatis is an essential source for the study of Italian history from the fourth to the ninth centuries. Agnellus seems to have been a well-born priest in the church of Ravenna, and his work is strongly colored by his personal experiences. He wrote it to demonstrate two strongly-held opinions. One of these was the apostolicity and independence of the Ravennate archbishopric; the other was the moral decline of recent bishops, and their erosion of clerical rights. Using the framework of a series of biographies of the bishops of his see, he presents his highly idiosyncratic view of history. The work is full of anecdotes, miracle stories, and mini-sermons, as well as information about historical events and artistic and architectural patronage, all of which have made it an invaluable source to scholars who study early medieval Italy.
