Ludwig Philippsohn was the most famous son of Moses; a Reform preacher in Magdeburg, he nevertheless "tried to steer a middle course between Reform and Orthodoxy. He was among the initiators of the Rabbinical Synods of Brunswick (1844) , Frankfort (1845) , and Breslau (1846) , but was critical of their decisions. One of his projects was the establishment of a modern institution for training scholars, rabbis, and teachers. His newspaper was also dedicated to the struggle for emancipation in all parts of Germany and Europe and fought discrimination and anti-Semitism. Philippson published a popular translation of the Bible which went through three editions (1854, 1858, 1878) together with a revised edition illustrated by Dorm (1875) . Along with I. M. Jost and A. Jellinek he founded the Institut zur Foerderung der Israelitischen Literatur (1854) whose main achievement was the publication of H. Graetz's history. " (EJ) SUBJECT(S) : Judaism. Seneca gives evidence that at the time there was widespread sympathy for, and acceptance of, Jewish customs (an acceptance of which he heartily disapproves) . EJ, 2007. . The society built a school to train Dutch and British missionaries in 1816. Since this time, the mission has worked in Russia and the Gold Coast (Ghana) from 1828, India from 1834, China from 1847, Cameroon from 1886, Borneo from 1921, Nigeria from 1951, and Latin America and the Sudan from 1972 and 1973
. A major focus for the Basel Mission was to create employment opportunities for the people of the area where each mission is located. To this end the society taught printing, tile manufacturing, and weaving, and employed people in these fields. How far we must depend on the authority of the church for the true sense of Scripture? II. III. Whether the Church of England can make out such a visible succession? . The protestant resolution of faith (1683) , maintained that since the age of the apostles the church has had no infallible guide but the scriptures. William Sherlock (c. 1641 June 1707) was a Church of England clergyman and religious controversialist. Sherlock was a leader among the brilliant group of London divines including Thomas Tenison, William Clagett, and Simon Patrick who carried on the literary defense of the Church of England against Catholicism from late in the reign of Charles II into that of James II.
