Complete with printed errata-corrige sheet tipped-in. This is one of several dozen books from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this copy does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. Alonzo Church 1903 - 1995 was professor of mathematics at Princeton University 1929-1967 and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA 1967-1990. He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. Si laureò in chimica pura presso l'Università degli Studi di Torino e nel 1897 in Medicina e Chirurgia. Cominciò l'attività professionale nel 1889 come assistente alla Scuola di Chimica Cavour a Torino; sei anni più tardi divenne assistente di chimica pura all'Università di Torino; dal 1896 al 1900 è stato assistente alla direzione del laboratorio alla Clinica Medica Generale di Torino per poi diventare assistente volontario di anatomia Patologica nel 1901. I suoi primi studi furono pubblicati nel 1897 dalla Clinica Medica Generale dell'Università degli Studi di Torino in un manuale. Fu il primo a stabilire in maniera esauriente l'azione terapeutica e biologica della lecitina e sono famose le sue ricerche sull'azione terapeutica della colesterina e derivati, che introdusse in terapia nel 1912-1914; quelli sui fermenti digestivi in toto; quelli sulla formazione dell'alcool nell'organismo animale per opera del pancreas e la successiva azione similare dell'insulina; sull'azione biologica dei lipoidi; sull'azione dei gas asfissianti; quelli sull'azione fotogenetica di certe sostanze organiche dopo l'irradiazione (fosfatidi, cerebrosidi, clorofilla); quelli intesi alla dimostrazione della formazione della follicolina nell'uovo in incubazione a spese della colesterina; sul potere radioattivo delle pozzolane, e molto altro ancora. Il principio delle scoperte di Cesare Serono fu sempre fondato sulla base della medicina biologica, ossia la cura di patologie e stati morbosi con prodotti estratti dallo stesso organo di animali sani, scientificamente trattati. Fondò a Torino la Società per la fabbricazione di prodotti biologici con la ragione sociale Dott. Cesare Serono e C., che nel 1906 divenne Istituto Nazionale Medico Farmacologico Serono. Negli anni successivi fu eletto Deputato alla Camera. È stato anche Consultore al Governatorato di Roma dal 1930 al 1936, Membro del Consiglio Superiore di Sanità, Presidente del Policlinico del Lavoro e Vice Presidente dell'Associazione Italiana di Chimica. First and only edition of a rare work on Calcutta and Hinduism written by a Christian missionary. The author was particularly interested in the teachings of the Brahmo Samaj an important monotheïstic reformist movement that started in Calcutta in 1828. Members of this movement and Christians regularly clashed leading to heated debates. However Reverend Cesary who is otherwise unknown tries to change misconceptions about the Brahmo Samaj and find common ground.The work is divided in 5 parts which explain Hinduism and Brahmo doctrines describe a journey from the author from Calcutta to Bombay offer a charming description of 19th-century Calcutta and explain daily living of Hindus. Together the different parts offer a fine portrayal of the late 19th-century socio-religious landscape of North India in general and Calcutta in particular.With the stamp of the Kapuzinerkloster Falkenburg on the first flyleaf. The edges and corners of the boards are slightly scuffed and the head and tail of the spine are bumped. The flyleaves are slightly foxed all leaves are creased near the spine and the work is slightly browned throughout.
