Additionally bound without the half-titles.These plates are the work of painter and illustrator Robert Smirke whose paintings works were often engraved and used to illustrated editions of such works as 'Don Quixote' and 'Gil Blas'.In this edition cleric and miscellany writer Edward Forster has translated Antoine Galland's enormously popular French edition of the tales into English.'Arabian Nights' or 'One Thousand and One Nights' is a collection of folk tales from the Middle East. It was collected over centuries with the roots of the tales being traced from Greek Indian Arabic Persian Turkish and Jewish folklore. The tales are being told by Scheherazade to the King Shahryar in a bid to save her life. After discovering his wife was cheating on him he killed her and vowed to marry a new virgin every day and then behead them the next. In this vein he had killed one-thousand and one women before marrying Scheherazade. Scheherazade entices the King by telling him a story on their first night together pausing halfway through as the sun came up. The King being absorbed by the story keeps Scheherazade alive eager to hear more from her.Bookplate of William Russell Griffiths to the front paste downs. In a full straight grain morocco binding. Externally rubbed. Minor bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spines resulting in a small amount of loss and lifting to the tail of the spines. A few light marks to the boards and spines. Front hinge of Volume I is strained. Front hinge of Volumes II and V are starting. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Tidemark to the rear endpaper and rear paste down of Volume I. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean with a few scattered spots. It was intended to exercise empathy in children and to guide them away from selfishness. Written by Reverend Francis Edward Paget who was the chapplain to the bishop of Bath and Wells and who restored Elford Church. Some of his other works include 'Lucretia' 'The Pageant' 'Tales of the Village Children' and 'Some Records of the Ashtead Estate and of its Howard Possessors'. With six illustrated head pieces throughout. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally sound. Light dampstaining to the boards causing discolouration. A couple of light markings to the boards. Minor sunning to the spine. Small amount of bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Rear hinge is strained. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown '1898'. Prior owner's tidy sketching of the Union Jack to the font pastedown. Light offsetting to the recto to the front endpaper and to the verso to the rear endpaper. McClitock with . love 5th of Dec 1914'. Internally generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot and handling mark. Textblock from pages 17 to 96 have been cut to the bottom to the fore edge. Puncture mark through the textblock however not affecting text. Page 1/2 is lifting but remains attached. Printed at the Chiswick Press. George Ratcliffe Woodward 27 December 1848 3 March 1934 was an Anglican priest who wrote mostly religious verse both original and translated from ancient authors. The best-known of these were written to fit traditional melodies mainly of the Renaissance. He sometimes harmonised these melodies himself but usually left this to his frequent collaborator composer Charles Wood. Cupid and Psyche is a legend that first appeared as a digressionary story told by an old woman in Lucius Apuleius' novel The Golden Ass written in the 2nd century AD. Apuleius likely used an earlier tale as the basis for his story modifying it to suit the thematic needs of his novel. With original protective paper wraps. In original imprinted paper-covered boards. A reply to Reverend George Townsend's review of the declaration made by certain Catholic Bishops Vicars and coadjutors in Great Britain which he presented with a critique of the necessity of a distinct explanatory statement of the doctrines and opinions of the Church of England. Written by Reverend George Corless who refutes the comments made by Reverend Townsend as ignorant and bigoted. Disbound with loss of boards and the majority of the spine. Externally sound with chipping to the spine and discolouration to the paper. A contemporary ink inscription to the front page. Internally firmly bound. George Crabbe 24 December 1754 3 February 1832 was an English poet and naturalist. The two works for which Crabbe became best known were The Village 1783 and The Borough 1810 both lengthy poems dealing with the way of life he had experienced. In 1783 he also married Sarah. In 1814 he became Rector of Trowbridge in Wiltshire where he remained. By the time of his death he was well regarded and a friend of William Wordsworth Sir Walter Scott and other major literary figures of the time. Complete in two volumes. In quarter diced bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound though rubbed. Some slight loss to paper on front board of volume II. Front joint of volume I starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Armorial bookplate of Nathaniel Preston to front pastedowns of both volumes. Ink signatures to title pages.
