Letter to unnamed correspondent. Extending an invitation to visit and noting that the "picture framer at Newcastle . Had seen a proof of Sir Walter before the letters some time ago." The author of this letter is possibly Rev. Robert Ker Porter of Draycott-in-the-Moors in Staffordshire. The Heath House mentioned in this letter is also located in Staffordshire. Rev. She was an English socialite and through her mother was the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. Uniformly bound in half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally smart with some rubbing to the joints spines and extremities of each volume. Bookplates of previous owners to the front pastedowns of each volume. Includes essays prose and poems on subjects from religion to the olympic games to craniology to Shakespeare. Richard Winter Hamilton 1794–1848 was a Congregational minister. A pious youth in 1810 he entered Hoxton Academy to study for the ministry. He began to preach early and when only nineteen delivered the anniversary oration at the Hoxton College chapel. In January 1815 he was chosen to be minister of Albion Independent Chapel Leeds where he became a popular preacher. Hamilton's sermons on French protestants 1816 and the death of Princess Charlotte 1817 attracted a good deal of attention. He was an original member and sometime president of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society established 1821 to which he presented several papers including "An essay on craniology" in December 1825. A selection of these papers was published as Nugae literariae in 1841. He was prolific writer of sermons speeches and essays throughout his life and undertook many tours on behalf of the London Missionary Society. The following winter he published Horae et vindiciae sabbaticae or Familiar Disquisitions on the Revealed Sabbath. Hamilton was a man of real ability and at his death one of the most prominent men in his denomination. DNB In a half crushed morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally a trifle rubbed. The first edition of this scarce work rebound in a full morocco binding with the original leather laid down to the boards.Reverend Richard Polwhele's three-volume history of Devonshire; one of his two major works on county histories the other exploring Cornwall. Polwhele 1760-1838 was a Cornish clergyman poet and historian.Volume I provides a general description of Devonshire and then information on the weather topography geology flora and fauna and agricultural practices of the county. Following this is a history of the county from the first settlements and the arrival of Julius Caesar to the Saxons and Normans then to King Charles I and finally to the late 18th century. Volumes II and III provide information on the Diocese of Exeter and the various archdeaconries of Exeter Barnstaple Totnes and surrounding areas.Volume I was published by Cadell Johnson and Dilly Exeter 1797. Volume II was published by Cadell Dilly and Murray Exeter 1793. Volume III was published by Messrs. Cadell and Davies Exeter 1806. Volume I is paginated individually then there is a continuous pagination from the section of Volume II titled 'Archdeaconries of Exeter Barnstaple and Totnes' until the end of Volume III. In this particular volume pages 247-48 and 381-82 of Volume II are not cancels. Volume I is lacking the map and all volumes are lacking plates; otherwise issue points match ESTC citation no. In 1914 Francis Red Fox James now presumed to be related to the Blackfoot tribe rode a horse across the country seeking states' approval for an American Indian national holiday. He delivered endorsements from 24 states to the federal government but a commemoration never materialized. The Washington Herald reported that James rode 4000 miles from a Crow reservation in Montana and was received by President Wilson to discuss the possibility of a "national Indian's Day" in October. Washington Herald 12/16/14 <br /> <br /> Although his mother was probably Blackfoot James claimed Native American heritage only as an adult. He changed his name by adding "Red" and later "Skiuhushu" to Francis Fox James. Two of the images in this collection contain familiar tropes of American Indian portraiture but the third offers an arresting image of James holding the American flag aloft as a kind of offering. This enigmatic gesture could be read as evidence of an optimistic belief in a mutual relationship between the US and American-Indian nations. It is also undoubtedly related to James' interest in legitimizing his Indian heritage as the founder of the Tepee Order a youth organization addressed mainly to white Protestant children. By 1920 the Order had evolved into an adult secret fraternal organization shrouded in mysticism. James was also associated with the Boy Scouts; he is credited with organizing the first All-Indian Boy Scout Troop in 1915. <br /> <br /> In The Search for an American Indian Identity 1970 Hazel Hertzberg writes that James "was deeply troubled by his degree of Indian 'blood.'" In addition to changing his name several times to seem more "Indian" he theorized that his Welsh ancestry was pre-Columbian using the Tepee Order to create a kind of third space a "pan-Indian society" that was neither Indian nor white. <br /> <br /> We find no other examples of these photographs though a US flag does appear on James' saddle in a photo documenting his White House visit. One picture signed by James with "Indian in Prayer "Great Spirit. / Red Fox James. Blackfeet." on recto and the following on verso: "A Gift / To my dear Friend / Eugene Beaton / c/o Burns Studio / Bucyrius sic Ohio. From Red Fox James / Blackfoot Tribe." Generally a very good collection with some fading to images but well preserved overall. unknown books‎
