‎[Pénitents Bleus de Limoges]‎

‎Livre de Chant, contenant les vêpres du dimanche, et plusieurs Pièces de Chant, notées, à l’usage de la Compagnie Royale des Pénitents Bleus de la ville de Limoges, sous le tître du glorieux St Jérôme, docteur de l’Eglise. ‎Reliés en un volume grand in-folio ; veau fauve marbré, dos à nerfs, caissons décorés et ornés d’une grande fleur de lys, sans titre, trois fleurs de lys (deux et une) au centre du premier plat, dans un demi cercle de guirlande, dentelle d’encadrement des plats et grande fleur de lys aux angles, décor entièrement doré, super-libris au second plat "J’appartiens a . la . compagnie de . Mrs . les . Penitens . Bleus de Limoges", dentelle intérieure (reliure de l’époque) ; (4) et 233, (3) pp., numérotation continue manuscrite ; le premier ouvrage semble avoir été confectionné avec un mélange de caractères au pochoir et manuscrits et donc unique ; les deux autres sont imprimés ; présence de signets de soie verte reliés en tête à une sorte de coussin.‎

‎Exceptionnel ensemble ; même les deux parties imprimées sont fort rares, elles ont été éditées sous l’autorité de Louis-Charles Du Plessis d’Argentré, évêque de Limoges, avec ses armes aux titres.Apparus au début du XVIIe siècle, les Pénitents Bleus, vêtus d’un sac bleu de "toile d’Allemagne", portaient sur l’épaule gauche une petite représentation de Saint Jérôme et un chapelet blanc tenu à la taille par une cordelette bleue. Le bas du dos a été retaillé pour laisser la place aux signets ; usure aux coins, un mors fendu sur trois centimètres, minuscules accidents à la reliure ; quelques feuillets, légèrement déchirés en pied, ont été grossièrement renforcés, sans gravité, dont deux par des reçus de contributions indirectes, ce qui ajoute au charme de l’ouvrage.‎

Many, but not all, of the papers focus on the monastery of Admont in central Austria. Admont was one of the most important spiritual, cultural, and intellectual centres in the high Middle Ages, and its magnificent library still houses an extensive collection of manuscripts - a rich resource both for the history of the monastery and for the broader history of medieval religious life. The book brings together the work of an international group of scholars whose work touches on various aspects of twelfth-century Admont, and the broader movement for reform and renewal in Germany and Austria. With the publication of Charles Homer Haskin's important work, The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century (1933), came a new way of looking at the civilization of the high Middle Ages. Scholars have since investigated many aspects of this revival: the rise of the universities, the development of canon law, the emergence (or re-emergence) of a heightened sense of human individuality, and the revival of religious fervour that has been labelled a reformation before the Reformation. Much of this scholarly work has focused on north-central Italy, France and England. Germany, however, has been little studied in this context, in part because the nature and trajectory of the reform there differed from that seen elsewhere in Europe. The essays in the book both explore connections between Germanic lands and the wider western European context, and consider the unique spiritual and intellectual climate of Germany's monasteries. Crehange who wrote under the pen name Ben Baruch, was a French Jewish writer and communal leader. Créhange was born to a religious Jewish family in Étain, a small town in Lorraine, where his father worked as hazzan of the local synagogue. By 1801, the family had moved to Dijon. He moved at a young age to Germany to work at a commercial house, but returned to France after going bankrupt. There he worked as a peddler and bookkeeper in Saint-Étienne, while serving as head of the Jewish community of nearby Lyon. Créhange moved to Paris in the 1830s. A supporter of the French Revolution of 1848, he published "La Marseillaise du travail", in which he provided new words to La Marseillaise to celebrate the cause of the proletariat, and a pamphlet purporting to show how the Tanakh prescribes a republic as the optimal form of government.At the same time, he became the spokesman for the Parisian Orthodox community in a series of disputes with the Consistoire central, which he saw as representing the interests of the Jewish elite. In 1848 he organized the Club démocratique des fidèles, which promoted republicanism and civic responsibility, and started a weekly periodical, La Vérité, in which he defended the rights of the Orthodox. He ardently lobbied for the introduction of universal male suffrance in consistorial elections.[5] Créhange also advocated against the heavy taxes imposed by the Consistoire on meat sold by butchers that it authorized as kosher, the sale of seats and aliyot in the synagogue, the costly dues for burial rites and plots, and the ban on private prayer assemblies. Créhange was one of the ten founders of the Alliance Israélite Universelle, of which he served as vice-president in 1863-1864, and would later become secretary of the Comité de Bienfaisance Israélite and the Consistoire central. Créhange translated and edited a number of liturgical volumes during the Second Empire. In 1846, Créhange published in two volumes a French translation of the Tseno Ureno under the title La Semaine Israélite, ou le Tzeéna Ouréna Moderne, Entretiens de Josué Hadass avec sa Famille sur les Saintes Ecritures. He also published a translation into French of the Hagaddah (1847); a book of prayers of the French Jews entitled Tefillat 'Adat Yeshurun (1850); Min?ah ?adashah, prayers of the Sephardic Jews (1855); an illustrated translation of Tehillim (1858), festival prayers for the use of Franco-Spanish and Franco-Portuguese Jews (6 vols., 1861-63); and from 1850 to 1872 an almanac, Annuaire Parisien.
