‎COPY No.48 OF RARE LIMITED EDITION OF 300 COPIES. This book is a facsimile edition of "Machzor Eretz Israel", one of the oldest medieval Jewish manuscripts. This is a prayer codex of some 90 pages which was composed in Palestine prior to the 10th century CE. It was preserved in the Cairo Genizah and was later spread among various libraries in Europe and North America. The codex was recollected and reconstructed by Joseph Yahalom, who along with Edna Engel has added a preface and an index to the facsimile. The codex features a very elegant script and various prayers and customs that did not survive in later prayer books. 345x240mm. 42+96 pages. Grey cloth Hardcover with illustrated dust-jacket. Gilt lettering on spine. Jacket wavy and slightly stained. Jacket edges slightly worn. ‎brossura L'autore analizza la formula del rito della messa detta "apologia", che è presente pressoché sempre e in tutti i messali (pur in molteplici differenziazioni), a partire dall'epoca della comparsa di questo libro liturgico riservato alla celebrazione dell'eucaristia. L'analisi prende anzitutto in esame il termine "apologia", presente già nei manoscritti per poi proporre una storia della nascita e dell'evoluzione delle "apologie" in Oriente e in Occidente. L'ambito della ricerca comprende i testi che vanno dalle testimonianze più antiche, dai rituali (ordines) del VII secolo al messale di Paolo VI (riformato a seguito del Concilio Vaticano II), passando da quello di tridentino. Una parte preponderante dell'analisi è dedicata alle apologie del messale di Paolo VI, in vista di una rivalutazione di tali preghiere presenti ancora, anche se in minima parte, nel messale attuale. ‎Summary The book revolves around some of the most important relics of Christendom ? chief among them the Crown of Thorns ? and the ways in which they became, effectively, personal objects of devotion, notwithstanding their ostensibly universal appeal. It was France that laid claim to the Passion and other relics in the middle of the thirteenth century in a campaign that involved the construction of a new magnificent chapel ? the Sainte-Chapelle ? designed specifically to display the relics, and the composition of new liturgies to celebrate and focus attention on them. As inert objects, relics could not accomplish much without being 'activated' one way or the other, whether in prose, poetry, paintings, statues, or in music. It is these modes of activation that endowed the substance of relics with identity and meaning that made them so powerful and effective. The liturgies studied in this book were some of the most critical mechanisms of activation; they enabled the power of the Sainte-Chapelle relics, articulated the nature of that power, and proclaimed it far and wide. Nowhere is this more evident than in the sequences memorializing these relics, which were chiefly cultivated and championed at the Sainte-Chapelle. This book examines these sequences, and the ways in which they give prominence to the underlying agenda of the French monarchy by promoting and naturalizing the notion of sacral kingship, rooted in biblical kingship.
