‎Didymus De spiritu sancto - Uber den heiligen Geist,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Paperback, 302 p., 125 x 195 mm. ISBN 9782503521404.‎

Language : German, Greek.‎

‎Hieronymus Commentarioli in Psalmos - Anmerkungen zum Psalter,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Paperback, 270 pages., 125 x 195 mm. ISBN 9782503521558.‎

Language : German, Latin.‎

‎Concilium Quinisextum - Das Konzil Quinisextum ,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Paperback, 363 p., 125 x 195 mm. ISBN 9782503524566.‎

Language : German, Greek.‎

‎Prudentius Contra Symmachum - Gegen Symmachus,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2008 Paperback, 284 p., 125 x 195 mm. ISBN 9782503529493.‎

Band erreicht. Language : German, Latin.‎

‎Caesarius von Heisterbach Dialogus Miraculorum - Dialog uber die Wunder,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Paperback, 497 p., 125 x 195 mm.*new ISBN 9782503529417.‎

‎Monastic Spaces and their Meanings Thirteenth-century English Cistercian Monasteries,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2001 Hardback, XVI+296 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503510897.‎

‎The author focuses on the Cistersian abbeys of northern England during the period 1132-1400, and supplies a microhistory of cultural, textual, personnel and architectural comparisons. Medieval Cistercians distinguished between material and imagined space, while the landscapes in which they lived were perceived as both physical sites and abstract topographies. Ostensibly, Cistercians lived in intensely regulated and confined physical circumstances in accordance with ideals of enclosure articulated in the Regula S. Benedicti. However, Cistercian representations of space also express ideas of transcendence and freedom. This monograph focuses on the abbeys of northern England during the period 1132-1400 (Fountains, Rievaulx, Jervaulx, Meaux, Sawley, Roche, Byland and Kirkstall) to facilitate a microhistory of cultural, textual, personnel and architectural comparisons. Post-twelfth century Cistercian history has been understudied, in comparison with research into the euphoria of the order's foundation, and has tended to focus on 'ideals' versus 'reality', whereas this study considers Cistercian houses in terms of contingency, singularity and specificity. The author engages with the work of theorists such as Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu and Henri Lefebvre, all of whom have explored the cultural production of space and the meanings attributed to certain spaces by abstract reference, performative practice and institutional direction. The study is richly illustrated with 45 images of the landscape and space of these houses and enables the reader to see how one monastic order positioned itself in relation to geography, architecture, institution, community and cosmos, and dealt with the dialectic between regulation and imagination, freedom and enclosure. Patrick Geary (UCLA) commends this study as being 'based on a wide reading of Cistercian texts and blends solid text-critical historical scholarship with more conceptual approaches in a most convincing way'. ‎Narratives of a New Order Cistercian Historical Writing in England, 1150-1220,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2002 Hardback, Narratives of a New Order Cistercian Historical Writing in England, 1150-1220, ISBN 9782503510903.‎

‎The author examines the classic genre for inventing a past, argueing that historical narratives of the English Cistercians helped define the characteristics of the new Cistercian monastic order as well as new political orders of twelfth- and thirteenth-century England. The origins of the Cistercian monastic order are currently under intense scrutiny and revision, as scholars identify how the written word was used to 'invent' a unified corporate identity. Here Elizabeth Freeman examines the classic genre for inventing a past ' the history, chronicle, and annal ' and argues that historical narratives of the English Cistercians helped define the characteristics of both the new Cistercian monastic order and also the new orders of twelfth- and thirteenth-century England. She shows how Aelred of Rievaulx's Relatio de standardo and Genealogia regum Anglorum articulated new senses of Englishness, and demonstrates through attention to library holdings that this focus on national self-definition continued throughout the twelfth century. The Fundacio abbathie de Kyrkestall shifts focus to local history and exploits Cistercian tropes of land-use in order to resolve the communal insecurity that characterised the Cistercians in around 1200. The Narratione de fundatione Fontanis monasterii features another method of reconciling the nostalgic quest for continuity with the intellectual recognition of change ' it separates historical 'fact' from 'meaning' and imbues events with rich allegorical significance. Finally, Ralph of Coggeshall's Chronicon Anglicanum indicates the multiple strategies Cistercian historians employed in order to turn the disparate and contradictory events of the past into a comprehensible and meaningful narrative. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2003 Hardback, XII+258 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503514048.‎

‎Knowledge of the Bible was the foundation of Carolingian intellectual life. Charlemagne's great capitulary, the Admonitio generalis, and his De litteris colendis leave no doubt that correct understanding of scripture, by both laity and the clergy responsible for communicating its message, was central to the king's efforts to lead his people to salvation. Biblical exegesis was the ovewhelmingly dominant form of literary production during the Carolingian epoch, not only in terms of the many original works but also in terms of the numerous copies made of older exegetical treatises. The substantial number of extant manuscripts of Carolingian exegetical writings strikingly demonstrates the transmission of this intellectual achievement to subsequent generations, whereby it exerted a well-documented influence on the twelfth-cenutry's new synthesis of biblical theology. This volume draws on recent scholarship which challenges the fifty-year old assessment by Beryl Smalley that Carolingian commentaries lacked originality and were worthy simply for transmitted their sources to the more original scholars of the eleventh century. The articles contained here show that the Carolingian period was a major turning-point in the history of the medieval approach to the Bible. Commentaries were composed for books of scripture ignored during the patristic era (such as the epistle to the Hebrews); new exegetical methods, such as the gloss, were invented; ninth-century exegetes selected and handled borrowings from earlier sources in an individualistic manner; and exegetical techniques impacted on poetry, homilies, artistic imagery and other manifestations of Carolingian intellectual life. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Hardback, XXII+448 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503522098.‎

‎Text and Controversy from Wyclif to Bale reflects and develops Anne Hudson's pioneering work in textual criticism and religious controversy from the late medieval period to the Reformation. Written by newly emergent as well as internationally recognised scholars, the volume explores the wide spectrum of religious thought and practices between c.1360 and c.1560. Many essays, following the methodology of Anne Hudson's scholarship, engage in the close study of manuscripts and archival holdings, disclosing new material and offering significant re-evaluation of documentary evidence and neglected texts. At a time of urgent calls for the reform of the Church, both in Britain and in mainland Europe, the voices of heresy can not always be distinguished from those of orthodox critics. Anne Hudson's coinage of the term 'grey area' to describe the indeterminate boundary between radical orthodoxy and heterodoxy provides the lead for investigations into theological debate, devotional habits, and censorship. The volume significantly redefines our understanding of texts, history, and controversies from Wyclif to Bale. Languages : English.‎

‎A discussion of lyrical poetry written for performance within the medieval Roman Mass, including the Latin texts, medieval interpretations and commentaries, all with English translations. The liturgical celebration of the Mass, a multifarious spiritual, artistic, and intellectual manifestation, had a central position in the cultural life of medieval Europe. The 'Gregorian Chants', mostly words from passages of the Old Testament, were reinterpreted and ornamented by means of new lyrics, and became the basis for new literary and musical genres, such as tropes, sequences, and other new lyrics. In spite of all the unifying efforts made by the Carolingian reformers, a rich variety in practice came to characterize the performance of the Mass in the ninth through the twelfth centuries. Extensive repertories of new texts and melodies were spread in manuscripts all over Europe. Until now this fascinating material has been the preserve of a small circle of specialists in musicology and philology. With this volume, the author introduces and analyses these hidden treasures to make them available to a wider public. It is directed to those with an interest in the philosophy, theology, and history of medieval Latin literature, and in the expressions of spiritual, poetic, and musical creativity of the European Middle Ages. ‎God Wants It!' The Ideology of Martyrdom in the Hebrew Crusade Chronicles and its Jewish and Christian Background,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, XVIII+420 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503514475.‎

‎During the first months of the First Crusade, groups of crusaders attacked the Jewish communities in the Rhineland, forcing them to choose between death and conversion. Many converted, but others chose to die as martyrs. Among these, some were killed by the crusaders, some killed themselves, each other, or even their own children in order to prevent forcible conversion. These events are described in a number of Latin accounts, but also in three Hebrew chronicles and in a number of Hebrew liturgical poems. These Hebrew chronicles introduce many new ideas connected to martyrdom which are not found in earlier Jewish martyr texts. They also differ considerably from contemporary texts on martyrdom, written by Jews living under Muslim rule. The purpose of the present study is as follows: to outline the most salient features of this new ideology of martyrdom found in the Hebrew Crusade Chronicles and how it differs from earlier Jewish tradition; to try to trace the roots of these new ideas, both by showing how the Chroniclers develop earlier Jewish ideas and also how they borrow notions and concepts from their Christian surroundings; to show what rhetorical means the Chroniclers use in order to present these innovations as firmly anchored in tradition; to attempt to explain why this ideology develops at this particular time and place, and thereby contribute some further methodological reflections on the nature of religious change, especially in a situation of persecution and oppression; to challenge the old paradigm that the Ashkenazic Jewish communities lived in isolation from their non-Jewish surroundings, and to suggest that a serious study of any medieval Jewish text must take into consideration the culture and current notions of the non-Jewish community in which the text was composed. ‎Teaching and Impact of the 'Doctrinale' of Thomas Netter of Walden (c. 1374-1430),‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2011 Hardback, XVI+298 p., 4 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503531793.‎

‎The first full-scale study of theologian Thomas Netter of Walden's Doctrinale, a work whose important response to the threat of Lollardy remained invaluable to later Counter-Reformation polemicists and apologists. Thomas Netter of Walden (c. 1374-1430) was a Carmelite friar, royal confessor, diplomat, religious superior, and theologian. His only extant theological work, the Doctrinale antiquitatum fidei catholicae ecclesiae contra Wiclevistas et Hussitas, was written with the purpose of combating the errors of Wyclif and his followers. For this reason, Netter's name and work are familiar mainly to those engaged in the study of Lollardy. Outside this field, Netter is almost unknown today, yet in his lifetime he was a highly regarded churchman who, it was said, could have had the pick of any diocese in England. From his death in 1430 until the middle of the eighteenth century Netter was a much-quoted and copied author whose exposition of Catholic teaching on subjects such as the Church, religious life, and the sacraments proved useful to many Counter-Reformation polemicists and apologists. This book is the first survey of the whole of the Doctrinale and it argues that there is more to Netter than anti-Lollard polemic. The author examines the principal topics in Netter's work - God, humanity, Christ, the Church, religious life, prayer, the sacraments - and he makes the case that there is a definite plan which links the various parts of the Doctrinale into a whole giving it a certain theological unity. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, XII+252 p., 4 b/w line art, 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503521770.‎

‎Rievaulx abbey was one of the most prominent houses of white monks (Cistercians) in England, and became in the course of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries an important feature of the ecclesiastical and social landscape of Yorkshire. The present work is the first in-depth study devoted to Rievaulx's social history. The abbey's once extensive archives were largely destroyed after the Dissolution, but the surviving late-twelfth-century cartulary provides a fascinating insight into the process of creating institutional memory, preserving and shaping information about various neighbours of the abbey, and creating a 'map' of social networks that developed around Rievaulx. The complex picture of building and sustaining connections between the abbey and its lay patrons, benefactors and neighbours forms a core to this book. This study also examines how Rievaulx co-existed with other religious institutions in the area, and particularly the practical dimension of friendships between abbots, declarations of mutual support between monastic communities, and how these were reconciled with a fierce competition for land and donations. Contacts between Rievaulx abbey and the nearby archbishops of York and bishops of Durham were intense and these contacts demonstrate how important these prelates were as potential supporters, and how broader ecclesiastical issues influenced their relationships with Rievaulx. Whilst exploring the case of one particular monastery this book is an important contribution to the current debate on the shaping of Cistercian practice, and particularly the mechanisms for the interaction between laity and monastic communities, during the High Middle Ages. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, XIV+224 p., 5 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503514888.‎

‎This book aims to collect and present the results of research done within the context of the project 'The voice of silence / La voz del silencio: An interdisciplinary research project about literate women and women authors in the West-European late Middle Ages (11th to 15th centuries) from a gender perspective'. The project was a bilateral research project, with participants of the University of Santiago de Chile on the one hand and Universiteit Gent on the other. Medieval scholars, literary historians, cultural historians and literary theorists joined forces. The angle from which the material was being studied, however, was always the same: gender being the central issue. The project focused on women as participants in late medieval society and culture. Indeed, all the researchers involved acquired their expertise in the field of 'medieval society and culture' and/or the field of women's literacy. Several members of this Flemish-Chilean project have contributed an essay to the proposed book, but supplemented by guest contributions. The guests are internationally renowned scholars reflecting an expertise in gender studies or in an aspect not covered by the team members of the project. Thus, the book contains essays by Anglo-American medieval scholars and researchers specialised in Dutch medieval mysticism. Their contributions complete the research results of the project, especially within the art of criticism. The story told in this book is focused on literate women and gender. In the course of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the voices of women authors, many of them religious and mystics, resounded again in a literate society dominated by clerics. Two of the most famous representatives of this 'female voice' are highlighted in Part I. These women were the forerunners of a new reading culture among (semi-)religious and even lay women in which the use of the vernacular was a decisive factor (Part II). Yet, from the thirteenth century onwards, and with increasing intensity towards the end of the Middle Ages, men once more tried to get a grip on (religious) women's reading and writing. Aspects of these attemps are illustrated in part III. Languages : English.‎

‎What was it that gave medieval art and architecture its form and style? What is it that attracts people to medieval art and architecture, especially that of the Cistercians? What shaped medieval buildings and determined their embellishments ? and what now determines the way we look at them? Some of the most intriguing questions in monastic and ecclesiastical architecture and archaeology are discussed in this tribute to Peter Fergusson and his lifetime of scholarship as an historian of medieval art and architecture, especially of the Cistercians. These thirty-four essays range from a discussion of the earliest Christian legislation on art (fourth century) to an account of a garden project of 1811 designed to efface all previous monastic habitation. Between these chronological signposts are studies on the design, siting, building, and archaeology of churches, infirmaries, abbots- lodgings, gatehouses, private chambers, grange chapels, and the life lived within and around them. Geographically, the papers range from the British Isles through Spain, France, Flanders, and Germany to the centre of the medieval world: Jerusalem. They treat of the complexities of building and re-building; of architectural and artistic adaptations to place, period, and political upheaval; of the interrelationship of text and structure; and of the form, iconography, and influence of some of the great cathedrals and churches of the Middle Ages. This is a wide-ranging and authoritative collection of studies which is essential reading for any historian of medieval - especially Cistercian - art and architecture. Languages : English.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, XIV+347 p., 21 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503515281.‎

‎Each of the studies in this volume draws upon a manuscript, or a group of manuscripts, that shed light on the practice of monastic life during this period of reform. Many, but not all, of the papers focus on the monastery of Admont in central Austria. Admont was one of the most important spiritual, cultural, and intellectual centres in the high Middle Ages, and its magnificent library still houses an extensive collection of manuscripts - a rich resource both for the history of the monastery and for the broader history of medieval religious life. The book brings together the work of an international group of scholars whose work touches on various aspects of twelfth-century Admont, and the broader movement for reform and renewal in Germany and Austria. With the publication of Charles Homer Haskin's important work, The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century (1933), came a new way of looking at the civilization of the high Middle Ages. Scholars have since investigated many aspects of this revival: the rise of the universities, the development of canon law, the emergence (or re-emergence) of a heightened sense of human individuality, and the revival of religious fervour that has been labelled a reformation before the Reformation. Much of this scholarly work has focused on north-central Italy, France and England. Germany, however, has been little studied in this context, in part because the nature and trajectory of the reform there differed from that seen elsewhere in Europe. The essays in the book both explore connections between Germanic lands and the wider western European context, and consider the unique spiritual and intellectual climate of Germany's monasteries. ‎Studies in Carthusian Monasticism in the Late Middle Ages,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XVI+367 pages., 45 b/w ill., 1 b/w tables, 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503516998.‎

‎This volume focuses on aspects of Carthusian history and culture of the later Middle Ages, a period of growth and vitality within the order. There is a primary but not exclusive focus on the English Province, which to date has received at best unbalanced attention. While the fundamental ambitions and ideals of Carthusianism formulated, articulated, and lived by the disciples of St Bruno between the late eleventh and the thirteenth centuries changed very little, the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries witnessed developments stimulated by and often commensurate with the progress of external culture. In such areas as devotional practice, literature, art and architecture, patronage, and monastic-lay relations generally, the houses of the order grew increasingly sophisticated: in some cultural spheres Carthusians were in the vanguard. The late Middle Ages thus offer rich opportunities for assessment of how a religious organization defined and justified by essentially reactionary conventions responded to constant forinsec evolution. The volume?s approach is multi-disciplinary, involving both senior and younger Carthusian scholars in investigation of the main facets of Carthusian life for which significant data survives. This permits a thorough analysis of the order?s character, one that reflects concern with synoptic understanding of medieval Carthusianism rather than partial assessment through a specifically devotional, literary, or more narrowly historical approach. Subject areas covered include the historical growth of individual Charterhouses, patronage of Carthusians by secular agents, Carthusian architecture and manuscript decoration, devotional practice, and textual culture. ‎Saints, Scholars, and Politicians Gender as a Tool in Medieval Studies,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Hardback, VIII+261 p., 5 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503516547.‎

‎Over the past eighteen years, gender has become a major analytical tool in medieval studies. The purpose of this volume is to evaluate its use and to search for ways in which to improve and enhance its value. The authors address the question of how gender relates to other tools of medieval research. Several articles criticize the way in which an exclusive focus on gender tends to obscure the impact of other factors, for instance class, politics, economy, or the genre in which a source is written. Other articles address 'wrong' ways of using gender, for instance monolithic or anachronistic views of what constitutes differences between men and women. Languages : English.‎

‎This book discusses the significance of the Carmelite liturgy as practised in the Krakow convent over a period of some four hundred years. Specifically, it examines the liturgical contents of five medieval Carmelite choir books from the Krakow convent and another choir book from this collection which is now in Wroclaw, and discusses their contents (especially their significant feasts), in terms of the Carmelite order's historical self-understanding and established liturgical tradition. Carmelite Liturgy and Spiritual Identity outlines the role of liturgy in the life of the Krakow convent and in relationship to the apostolic activity of these mendicant friars. It argues that the order's unique liturgical tradition, one which remained distinctive even after the Council of Trent, was crucial to their self-understanding. It also articulates how the liturgical practices of the Krakow Carmelites made a significant contribution to the spiritual life of the city and its people. Languages : English, Latin, French.‎

‎Law and Practice in the Age of Reform The Legatine Work of Hugh of Die (1073-1106),‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, XIII+246 p., 3 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503531908.‎

‎Offering a rare and first-hand account of law and practice in the late eleventh century, this book examines the legatine work of the most active, itinerant, and influential members of the eleventh-century church reform movement in France: Hugh (Hugo), bishop of Die (1073-82), archbishop of Lyons (1082-1106), and papal legate to Gregory VII (1075-85) and Urban II (1094-99). In reconstructing Hugh of Die's legatine and conciliar activity, this book offers intriguing new arguments about the many relevant and often confused issues surrounding eleventh-century legates, councils, and the law - three inextricable components of church reform and administration. Hugh's efforts in promulgating and disseminating reform in France in the 1070s, 1080s, and 1090s were shaped significantly by his council activity. The manner in which he conducted this business sheds light on every aspect of his work, revealing not only his personal interpretation and application of the law, but also his vigour in suppressing clerical marriage, the selling of church offices, lay investiture, and the gravity with which he conducted his duties as legate. New light is cast on Hugh's personality and achievements by looking at the nature and influence of his legatine and legal activity in France, qualities that can only be appreciated in light of the ferment of activity during Gregory VII's pontificate. The dialectical relationship between reform and law in eleventh-century France is a recurring theme throughout this investigation, illustrating in more demonstrable terms the flow of ecclesiastical business between the papal court in Rome and France and vice versa. ‎A comprehensive history of the establishment and activity of the Latin religious orders in medieval Greece. The monastic and mendicant orders that were so central in the evolution of western religion and spirituality also played a pivotal role in the expansion of Latin Christendom after the eleventh century. In the thirteenth century, following the capture of Constantinople by the armies of the Fourth Crusade, Cistercians, Benedictines, Franciscans, and Dominicans installed themselves in the former territories of the Byzantine Empire. Here, they had to adapt and compromise in order to survive, whilst Latins, Turks, and Greeks struggled to gain supremacy in the Aegean. They were also, however, faced with the challenge of attracting the devotion of the Greek Orthodox population, advancing the cause of church union, and promoting the interests of their Frankish, Venetian, and Genoese patrons. This volume follows the orders? fortunes in medieval Greece, examines their involvement in the ecclesiastical and secular politics of the age, and looks at how the monks and friars pursued their spiritual, missionary, and Unionist goals in the frontier societies of Latin Romania. ‎This international and interdisciplinary collection of essays discusses the regular canons in the medieval British Isles from their emergence in the twelfth century to the end of the monastic period in the sixteenth century. Of all the new monastic and religious groups to settle in the British Isles in the course of the twelfth century the regular canons were the most prolific. At the heart of their existence was the vita apostolica, but even more than other such groups the regular canons became involved in active spiritual care of their communities. Perhaps as a result of this feature they also enjoyed sustained support from founders, patrons and benefactors, and new foundations continued to be made long after the main force of the expansion of the monastic orders had declined. This interdisciplinary volume brings together scholars from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England who work on aspects of the history, culture, art history and archaeology of the regular canons in the medieval British Isles. Between them, the chapters of this book consider the regular canons in their wider historical and historiographical context, assessing their role in the religious, social, cultural, economic and political world of the medieval British Isles, and introducing new and recent research on this important religious group. ‎This book rediscovers a forgotten theme in medieval art, providing a vivid and original account of medieval society. This is the first monograph on the medieval Italian representations of the corporal and spiritual Works of Mercy, the fourteen basic categories of almsdeeds conceived by the scholastics. This is a genuinely interdisciplinary study: Federico Botana has painstakingly dissected frescoes, panel paintings, miniatures, and sculptures of the Works of Mercy to shed new light on fundamental aspects of medieval society. These depictions reveal how communities took care of their needy, in some instances beyond what can be gleaned in written sources. Most of all, they contribute to our understanding of medieval confraternal piety. For Church reformers and the Mendicant Orders, the Works of Mercy served to rally Christians against heresy. For Christians, performing the Works was a means of communion with Christ, opening the door to salvation. Botana?s discoveries demonstrate the essential importance of the Works of Mercy in the late Middle Ages, and suggest that depictions of the theme would have been far more common than previously thought. ‎Crusading in Frankish Greece A Study of Byzantine-Western Relations and Attitudes, 1204-1282,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, XLII+338 p., 1 b/w tables, 7 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503534237.‎

‎After becoming a major aspect of the contact between East and West during the twelfth century, the Crusades were even more widely deployed in the thirteenth century at the frontiers of Latin Christendom (in the Holy Land, the Iberian peninsula, and the Baltic), as well as within western Europe. Another such front was opened up after the conquest of Constantinople by the army of the Fourth Crusade in 1204, where the opponents were the Christian but 'schismatic' Greeks. A series of crusades were proclaimed for the defence of the Frankish states which were set up in the formerly Byzantine territories. This development defined the policy of the papacy, of the Latin powers, and of the Greek states in the area, and had a profound impact on Greco-Latin relations in the thirteenth century. At the same time, it constituted an important stage in the expansion of crusading at large, and was an integral part of the process of Latin Christendom's self-definition against the various 'others' it came in contact with: Muslims, pagans, as well as Eastern Christians. Yet, despite their importance, these expeditions have not been systematically examined before. This book addresses this omission. Drawing from both Byzantine and crusade historiography and making use of a wealth of unexploited sources, it investigates the evolution of crusading in Frankish Greece and places it in the context of Byzantine-western interaction, of political circumstances across Europe, and of developments in the theory and practice of Holy War. ‎An interdisciplinary contribution to the latest scholarship on Wyclif, Wycliffism, and lollardy. The philosophical and theological ideas of John Wyclif, their dissemination among clerical and lay audiences, and the movement of religious dissent associated with his name all provoked sharp controversies in late medieval England. This volume brings together the very latest scholarship on Wyclif and Wycliffism, with its contributors exploring in interdisciplinary fashion the historical, literary, and theological resonances of the Wycliffite controversies. Far from adhering to the traditional binary divide between 'orthodoxy' and 'heresy' as a tool for explaining the religious turmoil of the late fourteenth, fifteenth, and early sixteenth centuries, essays here explore the construction and rhetorical use of those terms, collectively producing a more nuanced account of the religious history of pre-Reformation England. Topics include the use of religious lyrics and tables of lessons as indirect rebuttals of Wycliffite claims; the social networks through which dissenters transmitted their ideas; dissenting and mainstream readings of Scripture; the 'survival' of Wycliffism in the run-up to Henry VIII's reformation; and the fate of Wyclif and Wycliffism in later historiography. Leading contributors include Anne Hudson, Alastair Minnis, and Peter Marshall. Languages : English.‎

‎Petrarch's Humanist Writing and Carthusian Monasticism The Secret Language of the Self,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2013 Hardback, approx. X+277 p., 30 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503544199.‎

‎By shedding light on the role played by Carthusian spirituality and practices in Petrarch?s life and work and following a common line of philosophical and theological development through his writings, this book argues that there still are lessons to be learned in both about the relationship between religion and literature, theology and spirituality. The fourteenth century saw an exponential rise in charterhouses across Europe. During this period of growth, the cloister walls protecting the silence and solitude of the relatively small and isolated semi-eremitical Carthusian houses became more porous, pliable, and open to the outer world. Although still considered at the forefront of Christian piety and asceticism, the Carthusians began to be more clearly identified with their newly acquired taste for the arts, literature, and architecture. Gradually, charterhouses became major humanist centres attracting sophisticated patrons, artists, and scholars. Of the long line of renowned anti-scholastic intellectuals who were attracted to Carthusian circles, Petrarch was undoubtedly the first. By revealing the Carthusian imprint on Petrarch?s thought as well as elements of Carthusian spirituality present in his texts, this book argues that Carthusianism was an essential component of Petrarch?s Christian humanism and hermeneutics of the self. An interdisciplinary approach, involving parallel readings of Petrarchan texts, early monastic and Carthusian primary sources, together with more recent theological reflections, offers new insights into the role of Carthusianism in the intellectual debate on spirituality and the position of the individual within this order. Through Petrarch and his literary works, the Carthusian milieu ultimately shaped not only Renaissance humanism but also our understanding of the relationship between ?self?, God, and others. ‎Artes praedicandi. Artes orandi‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 1992 Hardcover. 120 p., 160 x 240 mm, Languages: French, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503360614.‎
