Hardcover. 12mo - 17 x 12 cm.; 396 pp. Dark maroon cloth with gilt lettering and decorative banding on spine with blind stamped borders on both front and back boards. "Walmesley was a respected astronomer and onetime Catholic Bishop of York but he seems to have maintained the Newtonian tradition of eschatological speculation. Writing under the pseudonym �Signor Pastorini � around 1790 he published an often-reprinted �General History of the Christian Church � based on the Book of Revelation. Among other points he suggests that the locusts of Revelation Chapter 9 represent the Protestant sects and that the period during which they would torment the world would last just 300 years. " From a review by John Reilly of "Irish Recollections" by C. E. Tonna. This interpretation was also known as the Rockite eschatology named in honour of a fictional Captain Rock identified with the populist Catholic uprising in Ireland against the Protestant land owners and overlords. The prophetic interpretations of St. John's writings by Walmesley became known as the Pastorini Prophecies and enjoyed wide circulation with the common people both in Ireland and elsewhere. There are no approbations present. No date is shown for this the fifth American edition by Sadlier. Typical of Sadlier editions it still has a nice presentation that belies the poor quality of paper used. The text pages are browned with some brittleness present in the first signature and more so in the gutter margins. The front hinge shows some cracking at the tail whilst the binding itself is still quite strong and sturdy. The spine is faded with the corners and spine crown/heel show mild shelf wear The library mentioned is a church library with the only marking being a stamp on each of the front end papers and no external markings. A collection of 24 essays by the Reverend Silas-Chatard who was the bishop of Vincennes. The essays were written for publication in popular catholic periodicals of the day ". . . with a view to keeping the young men of America especially of what it seemed to me important they should know." As regards the condition of the book the boards are stained and faded on the fore edges the gilt lettering is all but gone and there is a rather large library sticker red cloth tape on the lower spine. Library attachments and stamps are on the front paste down end paper along with an elaborate book plate from a previous owner. An earlier previous onwer has written his name on all end papers front and back with pencil and has done so quite boldly. The library name is also stamped on the text block tail and fore edges and blind stamped on the title page. I would guess that the 'stamper' wore out the offending tool in the course of their scholarly duties. If not somebody most likely took it from them or should have. Surprisingly the interior is quite clean and the binding is good. One gathering in the middle sits a tad proud on the fore edge but is not loose. Aside from all that the essays are quite enjoyable to read and Bishop Silas-Chatard could be described as a bit of a Rennaissance man.; Ex-Library . Catholic Publication Society. hardcover

Owen da Silva transcribed and edited the music with the accompaniments and chirography by Arthur M. Bienbar. Mission sketches are by Paul A. Moore and the introduction is by the Hon. John Steven McGroarty. Besides the vignette-type illustrations by Moore there are 11 plate reproductions. Contents briefly are: 'Misa de Cataluna' 4 male voices Misa Viscaina 2 equal voices Credo Parisiense 2 equal voices 4 Gregorian Chants 6 Motets 2 Hymns morning and evening plus notes sources bibliography and an index. Professionally rebound retaining the original front paper with the gold lettering and paste-on paper illustration. Front board is half bound with corners and spine being a coarse beige linen whilst the back board is fully cloth covered with same. Warmly signed and inscribed by Fr. Owen on the half-title page to a John L. Keene. Signed again by Fr. da Silva on the title page. Approbations both Franciscan and Diocesan are present. This is #278 of the Patrons Limited Edition of 1000 copies of which 975 were originally for sale. Slight staining/spotting to the text block edges. Light brownish dampstain present on the lower gutter margins with no physical damage to the paper other than the discoloration and text is not affected. One instance of foxing on the limitation page and its facing page. Bookbinder's label affixed to back paste down. All-in-all a quite handsome copy of this important collection.; Signed by Author .
