Green cloth over boards with gilt lettering on the spine. Translated from the original Latin "Sermones in Canticum Salamonis ab eo loco ubi B. Bernardus morte praeventus desiit" by Lawrence Braceland. The source work in question is the edition of Jean Mabillon published in Milan in 1852. This present work is volume 20 in the Cistercian Fathers Series and includes Sermon 16 to Sermon 32. When Bernard of Clairvaux died in 1153 he had reached only the first four verses of chapter three of the Canticle in his eighty-four sermons. It was Gilbert who took up his unfinished task. Gilbert died without completing the task so it was completed by John of Ford a contemporary English abbot. Gilbert's contribution has been published in three volumes of which this is the second in the set. Two pages of abbreviations used and a 5 page selected bibliography. Previous owner's presentation book plate on the front free end paper and pasted on the title page is a slip of paper signed by the translator with a presentation note on same.
