Cette cérémonie solennelle et somptueuse, trois semaines après l'assassinat du roi, eu lieu dans la cathédrale Saint-Jean de Lyon où fût célébré le mariage d'Henri IV et Marie de Médicis en 1600. In fine on trouve le privilège accordé par Henry III à la Compagnie en 1583, donné par Jean de Machaut, recteur de la Compagnie de Jésus. Marque à la licorne de l'imprimeur sur la page de titre. Reliure de l’époque ,plein veau havane, dos à nerfs orné de caissons de double filet doré fleuronnés, pièce de titre en maroquin, roulette dorée sur coupes, tranches mouchetées rouges , début de fente , des frottements, manque en queue, auréole en marge supérieure de quelques feuillets , petites taches au titre .‎

‎ÉDITION ORIGINALE, illustrée de 5 en-têtes et 5 lettrines historiées gravées. La carte et la planche de musique n’ont pas été relié ici . L'ouvrage est présenté en quatre sections : la première une description physique du pays (incluant une belle carte gravée dépliante de la région), la seconde sur les coutumes, lois et costumes des habitants, la troisième sur leur religion et la quatrième sur Le roi Narai le Grand (qui régna de 1656 à 1688), sa cour et son royaume « fort recherché » (Hoefer), au même titre que la Description du Royaume de Macaçar du même auteur publiée la même année au format in-12, mais beaucoup plus difficile à rencontrer. Attaché très jeune à la mission du Siam, le père Gervaise (1662-1729) séjourna dans ce pays pendant quatre ans (1681-1685), apprenant parfaitement la langue et s'instruisant dans la religion, les moeurs, la littérature, la législation et l'histoire du pays. S'étant rendu ensuite dans le royaume de Macaçar (Célèbes), il fut accompagné à son retour en France par deux des fils du roi, que Louis XIV le chargea d'éduquer. Reparti en mission en Guyane en 1729, il fut massacré dès son arrivée par les Indiens Caraïbes avec toute sa suite. Nicolas Gervaise, né vers 1662 ou 1663 à Paris (Seine), est le fils du médecin de Fouquet, surintendant des finances , très tôt , il exprime le désir de se consacrer aux missions. En 1685, il quitte les MEP , une lettre de Tremblay, de 1705, dit « qu'il se dispose à partir pour la Louisiane » ; on ignore s'il s’y rend à ce moment-là. Vers 1723, il se propose pour aller évangéliser les pays arrosés par l'Orénoque ; il est nommé évêque d'Horren et sacré à Rome. Il est tué par les Caraïbes le 20 novembre 1729, dans l'Orénoque, " dans un bras de rivière qui se nomme Aquira ". RARE FIRST EDITION OF GERVAISE'S EARLY ACCOUNT OF THAILAND. It is a collection of pamphlets of various subjects, the first six of which concern the mismanagement of the Jesuits in the Spanish and Portuguese overseas territories and the related letters of complaints addressed to the ecclesiastical authorities, the intervention of Benedict XIV in this matter with the appointment of Francisco De Saldanha as cardinal of Lisbon and the reform of the Society of Jesus in Portugal made by him. The seventh pamphlet is a letter written by the Archbishop of Utrecht to an unknown French clergyman, in which the prelate deals with current issues in the Church, including Jansenism. The eighth and ninth pamphlets are grievances that the Norman Parliament addressed to Louis XVI regarding the imposition of new taxes, while the last pamphlet is the inauguration speech given by M. Le Franc de Pompignac before the French Academy and the speech in response to this given by M. Dupré de Saint Maure, President of the Academy.‎
