Edition imprimée à Amsterdam de la traduction en français par Voyron et Gabiot du chef d'œuvre du littérateur jésuite René Rapin. Publié initialement en latin en 1665 sous le titre "Hortorum libri IV", cet ouvrage valut à son auteur une réputation européenne. Divisé en quatre chants ("les fleurs", "les bois", "les eaux", "les fruits"), il fut de nombreuses fois réimprimé et traduit en plusieurs langues. Présentée avec le texte original latin en regard, la présente traduction est par certains jugée supérieure à la première traduction française parue en 1773. Internally fine cut close occasionally slightly affecting a headline or sidenote. With an attractive woodcut with the arms of the Archbishop of Trier on the verso of the first title. A collection of texts by prominent English Catholics compiled and edited by John Gibbons and John Fenn though often erroneously attributed to John Bridgewater. Among the texts are Edmund Campion's "Rationes Decem" Cardinal William Allen's "Apologia pro sacerdotibus Societatis Iesu" Robert Parsons' "De Persecutione Anglicana" and the anonymous account of the capture torture trial and execution of Edmund Campion and his companions Ralph Sherwin and Alexander Briant. The second volume contains Elizabeth I's edict against the English Jesuits and seminarians occasioned by Parsons' Jesuit mission to England. This is followed by rejoinders from Cardinal Allen in which he argues that the Jesuits were not attempting to assassinate Elizabeth and had no such directive from the Pope.Also included is John Nicholls' letter to Cardinal Allen in which he apologizes for having recanted his Catholicism under torture he tells us while imprisoned in England.The text describing the martyrdom of Parsons and the letter by Nicholls are almost unobtainable in other forms. Traduit par Alvaro Franco d'après l'édition de 1932. Un fort volume in-8 relié de 237 x 172 mm pour 561 pp. Demi-cuir anthracite à coins, dos à faux-nerfs soulignés de pointillés dorés, nom d'auteur et titre en caractères d'imprimerie frappés dorés, filets dorés en coiffe et queue. Plats marbrés assortis. Pages de garde rose avec règlement de bibliothèque au contreplat de la couverture. Sans les couvertures brochées originales. Page de titre, introduction, introduction à la seconde édition, contenu du livre, table des matières en fin d'ouvrage, bibliographie d'une vingtaine de pages. Deux pages d'images hors-texte avec un portrait de Loyola et deux peintures en noir et blanc entre les p. 40 et 41. Puisant à de très nombreuses sources, tant des pamphlets et essais antijésuites que des hagiographies rédigées par des membres de l'ordre, Fülöp Miller prétend offrir "non une contribution technique ou historique à l'histoire des Jésuites, mais un exposé des passions et des rêves d'hommes de chair et sang, ainsi que des moyens de persuasion, de sagacité, de l'esprit de sacrifice et d'héroïsme, de l'astuce, de l'intrigue, du despotisme... qui ont dû être employés dans la lutte avec des répercussions jusqu'à notre ère." (Introduction) Papier jauni par le temps, chasses frottées, reste d'étiquette de bibliothèque en queue, livre cependant exempt des marquages habituels des bibliothèque hors l'étiquette du premier contreplat. Grande livro octavo encadernado, medindo 237 x 172 mm com 561 pp. Meio couro anthracite com cantos, lombada com nervuras falsas sublinhadas com pontos dourados, nome do autor e título em caracteres impressos estampados em ouro, filetes dourados na cabeça e na cauda. Pratos marmorizados preto e rosa. Páginas de guarda rosa com regras da biblioteca na capa interna. Sem as capas originais do livro. Página de título, introdução, introdução à segunda edição, conteúdo do livro, índice no final do livro, bibliografia com cerca de vinte páginas. Duas páginas de imagens fora do texto com um retrato de Loyola e duas pinturas em preto e branco entre as páginas. 40 e 41. Capítulos: O Espírito do Jesuitismo, Inácio de Loyola, A Polêmica no Livro de Arbitragem, A Moral dos Jesuítas, Sobre Mil Máscaras Diferentes, Os Fins e os Meses, A Luta Contra o Progresso, Um Processo Secular Quádruplo. Com base numa vasta gama de fontes, desde panfletos e ensaios anti-jesuítas até hagiografias escritas por membros da ordem, Fülöp Miller afirma oferecer "não uma contribuição técnico-histórica à história dos jesuítas, mas uma exposição das paixões e sonhos de homens de carne e osso, bem como meios de persuasão, sagacidade, espírito de sacrifício e heroísmo, astúcia, intriga, despotismo... que tiveram que ser empregados na luta com repercussões até a nossa época." (Introdução) Papel amarelado pelo tempo, vestígios da etiqueta da biblioteca na ponta, livro, porém, livre das marcações usuais da biblioteca, exceto pela etiqueta na primeira capa interna. Lombada elegante, encadernação sólida e em boas condições para a idade. Livro raro e difícil de encontrar, ainda mais num estado assim.
