Moncrif's Cats.
1961. The Golden Cockerel Press. 1961 4to. Navy blue morocco with vertical inlaid panels of deep red morocco that on the upper board decorated in gilt t.e.g. others untrimmed illustrated with ten collotype reproductions of illustrations by Coypel from the edition of 1727. Spine the slightest bit sunned otherwise a near fine copy in slipcase. One of one hundred numbered copies specially bound by E.W. Hiscox from a total edition of four hundred numbered copies printed on Saunders mould-made paper at the Chiswick Press. Moncrif 1687-1770 was a French writer courtier and academician now best known for his Histoire des Chats first published in 1727. In letter form Moncrif discusses the role of cats throughout history and his work can be read both as a satire of pedantic academic writing and a sincere tribute to the domesticated feline. "Let us calm ourselves . one day we shall see the merits of Cats generally recognized. It is impossible that we should not come to feel that in our Cat we possess a friend who is the best of company an admirable Pantomimist a born Astrologer a perfect Musician in short the union of the talents & the graces" p. 104-5. Number 58 of 100 copies in a special binding of a total edition of 400 large octavo size 187 pp. inscribed by Reginald Bretnor. "Les Chats" a collection of eleven letters and ten poems about cats was first published in 1727. The book was an immediate success among cat lovers but quickly became the subject of many cruel satires and skits enough to cause the author to withdraw it from his collected works. Despite its wearisome history it survived unbeaten and in its translation by Reginald Bretnor can continue to delight the persistant ailurophile. "Coypel's designs were etched by de Caylus for the original edition Paris 1727; the collotype reproductions for this new edition were taken from the copies which were executed by T. Otten for the second edition Rotterdam 1728." ___DESCRIPTION: Original blue morocco with red morocco panels gilt-stamped medallion with cat vignette to upper board the spine lettered in gilt with gilt printer's device with two raised bands top edge gilt fore- and bottom edges uncut title page printed in black and red numerous etchings throughout fold-out geneology; Perpetua type Saunders mould-made paper large octavo size 9.75" by 6" pagination: 1-4 5-187 one of 100 copies in deluxe morocco binding number 58 signed and dated "8/21/77" by the translator with the caricature of a cat beneath his signature on the limitation page. In a slipcase covered in blue cloth. ___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean the corners straight and unrubbed the binding tight with solid hinges the interior clean and bright and free of prior owner markings; clean crisp as new.
