1805. Original Wrappers. Very Good binding. 12mo. 19 1 blank pp. First edition. As issued stitched in plain wrapper; a few leaves unopened. Light wear to the covers including some silverfishing to the top inner margin of the rear wrapper and diminishing through the next several leaves; light soiling but largely a remarkably copy. Deaccessioned as a library duplicate the only indication being a mid-20th century gift stamp deep in the inner margin of p. 3; contents clean. <br /> <br /> An address criticizing incumbent Pennsylvania governor Thomas McKean and recommending Simon Snyder as governor in the 1805 election. While Snyder lost to McKean in a contentious 1805 contest he would ultimately win in 1808 and serve three terms. The language early in the address is salient: "Principles and not men were the foundations on which American independence was established . Principles and not men have been the objects of contest ever since between the several parties which have arisen under our government; but we are now brought to a point when it is to be determined by the public suffrage whether men setting at defiance the wishes of the people and the principles of representative government shall govern Pennsylvania" p. 3. A few old ink marks. Old ink name "John Baxter" top of the title page. <br /> <br /> A brief search on the internet provided no information on the Charlotte and Camden Railroad. However most likely the name of "Camden" was replaced with "South Carolina" to become the Charlotte South Carolina Railroad Company. Construction began on the rail route from Charlotte to Columbia South Carolina in 1847 the year after this report. The Charlotte South Carolina Railroad began in 1852 and existed until 1869 when it was absorbed by Charlotte Columbia and Augusta Railroad. The line ran from Charlotte North Carolina to Columbia South Carolina and was the first carrier to serve Mecklenburg County North Carolina. A printed caption below the image identifies the "Manitoba Legislative Assembly 1947" and lists all members by row along with the Speaker and legislative staff. <br /> <br />A crisp and detailed panoramic photograph capturing the 22nd Manitoba Legislature in session. The image provides a rare wide-angle view of the historic chamber with all members present at their desks. This 1947 assembly is a fascinating snapshot of Manitoba's unique "Coalition" era. The government led by Premier Stuart S. Garson K.C. pictured in the 3rd row was a fusion of Liberal-Progressives and Progressive Conservatives a "non-partisan" administration that had its origins in the war years. <br /> <br />The photograph is a roster of Manitoba's post-war political establishment. In addition to Premier Garson who would leave in 1948 to join the federal cabinet the roster includes his successor Hon. Douglas L. Campbell 3rd Row who would go on to be Premier for a decade. Also present are numerous other cabinet ministers and future luminaries including: Hon. J. S. McDiarmid 3rd Row who would be appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba in 1953; Lt.-Col. Gordon Churchill 1st Row a future federal MP and prominent cabinet minister in the Diefenbaker government; Gunnar S. Thorvaldson K.C. 2nd Row a future Senator. <br /> <br />Most remarkably this image captures the legislature's sole dissenter and one of its most notable figures: William "Bill" A. Kardash 2nd Row. As the only member of the Labor-Progressive Party Communist in the assembly Kardash was a conspicuous and often isolated voice in the coalition-dominated house. His presence seated amongst the very establishment he ideologically opposed is a powerful visual representation of the era's complex political landscape at the dawn of the Cold War. <br /> <br />The photograph itself is a fine example of the large-format group portraiture perfected by the Gauvin Gentzel Studio one of Winnipeg's leading photographic firms for decades known for their clarity and high-quality compositions. The silver gelatin print retains excellent clarity sharp detail and strong contrast. The mat is clean and bright with only very light toning to the edges and minor bumping to the corners. 1852. Law Acts of the General Assembly of Virginia Passed in 1852 in the Seventy-Sixth Year of the Commonwealth. Richmond: William F. Ritchie Public Printer 1852. First Edition Hardcover with original half legal calf over marbled boards. 403 pages. Measures 6" x 9.5". Includes section on manufacturing and mining companies insurance banks claims towns schools and cities and how the Acts passed effect each. Also includes Virginia Bill of Rights at the back of the text along with an extensive index dealing mainly with tax. There is also an Act to suppress "Gambling by Negroes and White Persons together" which may have been an early manifestation of Separate but Equal. During the great age of expansion there is also abundant information on navigation companies steamship companies railroads and marine railways. Front board is cracked at gutter but still attached. Foxing on pages but cover is clean. All pages attached and textblock is tight. In very good condition. unknown

1932. African American Religion Silver gelatin photograph of twenty-two African American congregates at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. 1932. Approx. 4.5" x 6.5". Photograph shows twenty-two congregates of varying ages twenty-one adults and one child dressed in "Sunday best" sitting and standing in two rows in front of a church sanctuary. Caption written on photograph reads "Ward #1 Mt. Zion Baptist Church 1932". Baptist Protestantism has been the predominant religion among African Americans from the Civil War until today however the Great Depression marked a particularly difficult time period for Baptist churches across the United States. In 1932 Protestant church attendance was at an all time low in part due to the church's inability to dispense charity to the needy and due to a general loss of faith in the face of financial hardship. African American Baptist Mt. Zion congregations are also known for their roles in the Civil Rights Movement. The churchgoers pictured were among a select few who remained steadfast practitioners of Baptist Protestantism during a difficult time in U.S. history. Very good condition. unknown
