Organized by the Comité de Soutien Franco-Américain pour l'Intégration Raciale the event featured a speech by King and music from Harry Belafonte and French singer Hugues Aufray sponsored by Suze Liqueur. Two-color poster with folding creases one tear to the right edge minimal wear and toning; overall very good. Sight size 14.5 x 22.5 inches 37 x 57 cm archivally matted and framed to an overall size of 20.5 x 26.5 inches.<br style="">In March 1966 King and Belafonte went to Europe for fundraising appearances on behalf of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference starting with the Palais des Sports in Paris on the 28th and closing in Sweden on the 31st. This poster for the French appearance is emblazoned with the logo of a sponsor Suze Liqueur and also cites the French-American Committee for Racial Integration as the organizing body. The opening act for the evening was the popular French folksinger Hugues Aufray doing a set of Bob Dylan covers followed by a set by Belafonte. Dr. King closed out the evening with a speech on civil rights touching on the war in Vietnam and American support for South African apartheid. The tour raised more than $100000 but drew the wrath of the American ambassador to France for airing American problems overseas. See Ross Hollywood Left and Right p. 220. First edition first printing of The SCLC Story containing one of the first appearances in print of Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream Speech. Quarto original illustrated wrappers as issued illustrated with photographs including a full-page photograph of King photographs of the officers executive board regional and secretarial staffs of the SCLC. Signed by Martin Luther King Jr. on the front panel "Best Wishes Martin Luther King." With a letter of provenance that relays that the magazine was signed at an event where King spoke in Atlanta in 1964 and that it may have been first obtained when the Coliseum in Los Angeles hosted the Religious Witness for Human Dignity on May 31 1964. Dr. King gave a forty-minute speech at this event of which Pepperdine University Archives has a recording that can be hear online. In near fine condition. Very rare and desirable containing one of the earliest appearances of King's powerful and iconic I Have a Dream Speech. Baptist minister and activist Martin Luther King Jr. became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 through 1968. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and in 1957 became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference SCLC. With the SCLC he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany Georgia and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham Alabama. He also helped organize the 1963 March on Washington where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. On October 14 1964 King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. In 1965 he helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches and the following year he and the SCLC took the movement north to Chicago to work on segregated housing. In his final years he expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty and the Vietnam War alienating many of his liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled "Beyond Vietnam". In 1968 King was planning a national occupation of Washington D.C. to be called the Poor People's Campaign when he was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a holiday in numerous cities and states beginning in 1971 and as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986. A very good or better copy in the publisher's stapled wraps. Some faint but visible droplet stains to verso and the original owner's surname in ink on the front wrap with effaced 25-cent inked price barely noticeable immediately next to same. Else a crisp clean well-preserved example. This is the first separate publication of Martin Luther King's first major comprehensive manifesto which explicitly called for the breaking of unjust laws and the the cost of silence and compromise. Penned in response to a letter signed by eight Birmingham-area clergymen urging King and his supporters to keep their protests to a minimum and strictly obey the law King here uses for the first time phrases such as "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" and "justice too long delayed is justice denied." The letter dated April 16 1963 was printed in part in some newspapers in May but this as far as we can tell is the first separate publication dated in May in the printer's code on the rear wrap. Miller / Bibliography of the Negro in America notes the first appearance as the June 12 1963 edition of Christian Century. This publication would seem to predate that one. Scarce in commerce. The first printing has become extremely expensive now out of reach for many collectors. This second printing with a similarly small print run is similarly scarce in the trade and an appealing alternative. An important ephemeral document of American Civil Rights history. The third printing of this seminal text of the civil rights movement: an open letter penned by Martin Luther King Jr. to a group of white clergymen from solitary confinement in a Birmingham Alabama jail. King was arrested on Good Friday 1963 for his participation in a campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience against Alabama’s segregationist policies. Contrary to popular belief King did not write the published letter but continued to edit and revise it along with other SCLC staffers after his release. The SCLC hoped to have it published in the New York Times but following leaked excerpts appearing elsewhere the Times decided against publishing it. The American Friends Service Committee received permission from the SCLC to publish it as a pamphlet and 50000 copies were published in May 1963.
