Bound in full dark brown leather with 4 faux raised bands to spine and bright gilt lettering and decorations to spine and covers. A previous owner's name in gilt to front cover Gottlieb Knaux too. All edges gilt. Lovely decorative endpapers. Exterior admits to some rubbing to leather and a little dryness though this isn't offensive. Minor spacing to front hinge. Back hinge admits to greater spacing with blank printer's blank detached. A number of pages admit to tiny tears and small chips as well as professional repair to extremities of a few pages and again professional repair near gutter of a small number of leaves. A number of minor dings to edges of pages. Paper admits to mostly medium foxing some interior soiling and mild spotting. Several leaves at end appear to have some minor moisture staining at extremities though this isn't terribly offensive. Unobtrusive and faint pencil and pen in an older hand to just a few leaves. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House 1897. Leather. Very Good. 1079p OT/Apocrypha; 311p NT. A hardcover book bound in full black leather with marbled endpapers. Edges and spine are scuffed; small spotty stains on side foredge. Light edge wear to some pages and to the endpapers and some pages have creased corners. Apart from some occasional soiling the pages are unmarked and the binding is tight. Very good condition considering its age. The Luther Bible with all text in German using the Gothic-style fraktur font. Includes the Apocrypha in between the Old and New Testaments. Hardcover original full leather binding. Exterior is darkened with age and leather is worn. Edges and corners show bumps/wear. The interior binding of the text portion of the pages is good but there is some pulling at the boards. There is also the possibility that one or more of the front end pages are missing has there is only one blank one in the front and two in the back. The paper is darkened due to age and foxing and staining is present throughout. There is a faint dampstain in the upper outside corner which can be seen in about 1/3 of the book. The first volume in the title contains 828 pages in the second book contains 271. The second title page also is torn almost all the way through as seen in the photo. A few pages have small corner folds present which have been straightened out. No signatures or bookplates present no library markings no handwriting found. This is an early German edition printed in the US. Also found between the pages is a very faint attractive pencil drawing of a woman which was used as a bookmark. Luther's translation of the Bible into the vernacular instead of Latin made it more accessible which had a tremendous impact on the church and on German culture. It fostered the development of a standard version of the German language added several principles to the art of translation and influenced the writing of an English translation the Tyndale Bible. His hymns influenced the development of singing in churches. Volume I complete in itself with no further volumes recorded. In a blindstamped calf binding. Externally rubbed with some wear to the extremities and some marks. Joints are cracked and tender. Internally firmly bound.
