COOLIDGE Calvin
ADDRESS OF PRESIDENT COOLIDGE TO THE NATIONAL REPUBLICAN COMMITTEE AT THE WHITE HOUSE DECEMBER 6 1927
Washington: U.S. Gov. Printing Office 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine and exceptionally scarce item with a superb association. Small octavo 5-1/2" x 7-1/2" bound in flexible blue morocco leather lettered in gilt including Coolidge's name at the bottom right and decorated in gilt with stars in the corners and the Presidential coat-of-arms in the center. With a printed title page but the 19 text pages mimeographed rather than printed on paper with three holes in the gutter margin. Obviously a very limited production likely printed for Coolidge's personal use and quite possibly unique. OCLC does not record any printed copy of this speech though it lists about 70 others. Given the same day as the 1927 State of the Union address this speech was given to a much smaller more selective audience. In the audience was William Butler a Massachusetts Senator who was Coolidge's campaign manager and the Republican Party Chairman. This is his copy and is INSCRIBED and SIGNED to him by the President two days before Coolidge left office: "To Honorable William M. Butler/In appreciation of a long and/faithful friendship/ Calvin Coolidge /The White House/March 1 1929." In the third sentence of his speech Coolidge acknowledges Butler: "Both the primary and the election were under the immediate direction of the present Chairman William M. Butler." In his AUTOBIOGRAPHY Coolidge remarks: "The campaign was magnificently managed by William M. Butler." Two minor text corrections in ink likely by Coolidge.

U.S. Gov. COOLIDGE CALVIN
An Extraordinary Archive Relating to his Magazine Series “Enemies of the Republicâ€
The three part series appeared in the Delineator in the summer of 1921 while Coolidge was Vice-President. The mss. consist of the following: “Reds in the Women’s Collegesâ€; 35 pages; Coolidge’s holograph in pencil corrected by Coolidge and with a note on Senate letterhead “Corrected as indicated and completed. Calvin Coolidgeâ€; “Enemies of the Republicâ€; 34 pages; Coolidge’s holograph in pencil; corrected; “Woolves sic in Lamb’s Clothingâ€; 28 pages; corrected and with his signed pencil instructions at the top of the first page. There are additional pencil notes by Coolidge 8 holograph letters signed 6 typed letters signed some to the editor and some to her husband and numerous telegrams secretarial letters carbons and clippings as well as an 8 x 10†photograph somewhat oxidized inscribed by Coolidge to the editor’s son. Much of this correspondence relates to the controversial subject matter as well as the baseless accusation that Coolidge had put his name on the work of a ghostwriter the falseness of which is unequivocally proven by these mss. The editor Marie Meloney Mrs. William Brown Meloney was clearly outraged by these charges and wished to file suit but Coolidge counseled otherwise “.I have had considerable experience in dealing with the public and am inclined to think that the way to deal with the situation you have reported is to ignore it entirely. Of course you have the original evidence in your possession so that you know I wrote these articles myself.†The famously frugal Coolidge used whatever stationery he had at hand: personal â€Calvin Coolidge/ Northampton Massachusetts†the letterhead of the Governor of Massachusetts as well as his official “Vice-President’s Chamber Washington.†In a letter to Mrs. Meloney dated March 7 1921 in which he was submitting his ms. he wrote “.May I add that this is the first letter I have now written on my official stationery.†The women’s colleges took exception to the sensational and exaggerated claims of Coolidge who had come late to red-baiting a hysteria which by this time was already declining. Excellent condition; in a custom quarter-morocco slipcase. hardcover

Coolidge Calvin
Autograph Letter signed "Calvin Coolidge" to Mr. D.M. Stoner
Washington D.C. 1922. 2 pp. pen and ink on folded sheet with autograph envelope stamped "Washington D.C. Dec. 7 1922". 8vo. Fine. In brown cloth chemise. 2 pp. pen and ink on folded sheet with autograph envelope stamped "Washington D.C. Dec. 7 1922". 8vo. Advice to a Young Man: "All you need to do is work and save your money". Coolidge as Vice President writes a letter of advice to eighteen-year old D.M. Stoner. Reading in full: "Here is what I think is the right change. It is a satisfaction to know that you are doing well. I shall take for granted that you are glad of my help so there is no need for you to come to thank me. Now be careful of your money. It does little good to earn money if none is saved. You need some life insurance. If you will take what is enclosed not present and get an 'ordinary life' policy with twenty years settlement period you will never regret it. This would buy $1000 and have some change left over. All you need to do is WORK and SAVE YOUR MONEY. Just two things." A fine letter; Coolidge in typical to-the-point fashion expounds the virtues of frugality and hard work. unknown

Coolidge Calvin
Calvin Coolidge writes a Book Review
New York: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation c1929. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Ephemera. Good. Single sheet approximately 11 inches by 7 inches tri-folded Text on 5 of the six panels. Rare post-Presidential ephemera. Calvin Coolidge born John Calvin Coolidge Jr.; July 4 1872 - January 5 1933 was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 30th president of the United States from 1923 to 1929. A Republican lawyer from New England born in Vermont Coolidge worked his way up the ladder of Massachusetts state politics eventually becoming governor of Massachusetts. His response to the Boston Police Strike of 1919 thrust him into the national spotlight and gave him a reputation as a man of decisive action. The next year he was elected vice president of the United States and he succeeded to the presidency upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding in 1923. Elected in his own right in 1924 he gained a reputation as a small government conservative and also as a man who said very little and had a rather dry sense of humor. Coolidge restored public confidence in the White House after the scandals of his predecessor's administration and left office with considerable popularity. As a Coolidge biographer wrote: "He embodied the spirit and hopes of the middle class could interpret their longings and express their opinions. That he did represent the genius of the average is the most convincing proof of his strength". He is praised by advocates of smaller government and laissez-faire economics while supporters of an active central government generally view him less favorably although most praise his stalwart support of racial equality. Allan Louis Benson November 6 1871 - August 19 1940 was an American newspaper editor and author who ran as the Socialist Party of America candidate for President of the United States in 1916. he 1916 campaign was run by Benson and the Socialist Party primarily through the newspapers with Benson concentrating his fire on the country's "Preparedness" campaign. The campaign proved manifestly unsuccessful with Benson capturing only half of the nearly 1 million votes cast for Gene Debs in the 1912 campaign. Benson and his running mate George R. Kirkpatrick ultimately received 590524 votes for just 3.2% of the total vote. Daniel Webster January 18 1782 October 24 1852 was an American statesman who twice served in the United States House of Representatives served as a U. S. Senator from Massachusetts 1827 1841 and 1845 1850 and was twice the United States Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison and John Tyler 1841 1843 and Millard Fillmore 1850 1852 . Along with James G. Blaine he is one of only two people who have served as Secretary of State under three presidents. He also sought the Whig Party nomination for President three times: in 1836 1840 and 1852. Benson wrote "I have tried in this book by blending the incomplete pictures of Webster's friends to present a complete portrait not merely of Webster the statesman but of Webster the man with all his delightful drolleries and not without some attention to his weaknesses. Also I have tried to show that the historians of his day never gave him his due. He seems to be to have been the only American statesman of his day who advocated a course that if followed would eventually have done away with chattel slavery without a civil war. " This is a remarkable item--a former President commenting on a biography of an American Statesman written by a former Presidential candidate. It is particularly relevant for President Coolidge to review a biography of Daniel Webster since they shared such strong New England roots. President Coolidge summed up his review of Benson's biography of Daniel Webster by stating "His life and works deserve fare more study than they receive. Mr. Benson has brought into his book much material that I have not seen before in print. He has effectively answered many criticisms correctly represented Mr. Webster as a great intellect an able lawyer a wise statesman and left him also as a human being entitled to our admiration our sympathy and our love." This is a generally overlooked or forgotten item in the Oeuvre of President Calvin Coolidge which provides significant insight into how he reflected both on the work of the biographer and on the subject of the biography.
