Horn Calvin; Kennedy John F. Foreword
New Mexico's Troubled Years
Albuquerque New Mexico: Horn & Wallace Publishers 1963. 239 Pages Indexed. Previousl owner's naame on front endpaper isblacked out Blue cloth with white lettering. Interior text pages consist of high quality paper and are free of marks or stamps. Includes frontispiece portrait of Charles Bent Military Governor of New Mexico 1846-47. Endpapers illustrated with sketches by Lew Wallace of The Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe. This volume tells the story of New Mexico's first years within the United States. These were stirring and picturesque times but they were also times of uncertainty and peril. The early governors faced hard problems in establishing law justice and a stable framework of society on a tough and undisciplined frontier. Acting without precedent under conditions that required immediate decision they had to improvise trying to bring calm out of chaos equity out of vigilantism. With the advantage of hindsight there are many instances where they might have acted more wisely. Nevertheless they deserve to have their trials and their accomplishments preserved in the record of our nation's history. In these formative years New Mexico was dependent on the national government for almost total support. We can be proud that the investment of the people of the United States in New Mexico is today paying dividends to free people everywhere. The largest known deposits of uranium in the world are in New Mexico along with important reserves of oil copper and timber. The state is celebrated for its atomic and space research facilities. Yet the scenic grandeur on every hand forever reminds us of New Mexico's foundations in the past. Not the least of New Mexico's resources is the quiet spectacle of yesterday dwelling in harmony with tomorrow- a spectacle which offers the hope of a brighter future for men and women all over the world. Contents: Foreword by President John F. Kennedy Introduction Vanguard of Democracy James S. The University in Turmoil and Transition; Crisis Decades at the University of New Mexico
Albuquerque New Mexico: Rocky Mountain Publishing Co. 1981. 359 Pages Indexed. Red cloth with silver spine and cover lettering. Small red stamp on top and bottom page edges. Remainder Endpapers illustrated with black and white photograph of the campus and the city including the Sandia mountains as background. A used book in As New condition. In this book Regent Calvin Horn offers his candid view of the University of New Mexico since the 1960s. His perspective is that of witness and participant; his subjects are the dramatic events and daily operations of the University beginning with student confrontations of the 1960s and ending with scandals in the athletic department. Throughout he offers an absorbing account of the pressures pitfalls and rewards of serving the University. Appointed in the aftermath of the bayonetting of eleven students by National Guardsmen in May 1970 Horn has consistently supported students' rights to challenge the establishment in responsible ways. A major theme in this book is his articulate defense of academic freedom as indispensable to the advancement of knowledge. Preserving a balance between rights and responsibilities is essential to guarding academic freedom but it has been difficult to maintain against legislators students and even professors in controversies such as that of the Love Lust poem in 1969. This book is a careful study of the relationship between the regents and the president as they work to govern the University.
