È una ragazza eccezionale, anche per via dell'idea elevatissima che ha di sé, fatto insolito nelle donne del suo tempo. Non la posizione, non il denaro: ciò che più l'affascina in un uomo è il talento, e la capitale ribolle di uomini di genio, che sono attratti da Alma come da una calamita. Perdono la testa per lei, che li investe della propria luce, ne esalta le capacità, ne moltiplica le energie, si fa dea per trasformarli in divinità. Perciò quando lei li lascia, la caduta è tanto grave. Klimt, Mahler, Gropius, Kokoschka, Werfel l'hanno amata, le hanno scritto lettere appassionate, le hanno dedicato opere, e da lei sono stati traditi, tormentati, abbandonati. Come se il desiderio inappagato di una carriera artistica autonoma potesse sublimarsi solo in ciò in cui la leonessa divorata da fantasmi di gloria non ha rivali: l'arte di essere amata. Ma mentre al suo fianco i suoi geniali mariti e amanti creano meraviglie immortali, Alma comporrà pochissimo e non dirigerà mai un'orchestra, marchierà a fondo le loro personalità seppellendo per sempre le proprie aspirazioni. «D'ora in poi il tuo compito è solo rendermi felice» le scrive Mahler in una lettera che è l'inizio di tutto, del compimento di un destino, questo sí, comune alle donne del suo tempo. Françoise Giroud, figura eminente della scena culturale e politica francese, in questa biografia non si limita a narrare la lunga parabola della «vedova delle quattro arti», ma restituisce un ritratto straordinario di quella Felix Austria, con i suoi evidenti splendori e le sue contraddizioni dolorose, che verrà di lì a poco spazzata via dal secolo breve.
