Edition originale et unique illustrée d'un saisissant frontispice gravé sur cuivre par Bovinet d'après Binet, inspiré par les illustrations des romans gothiques alors en vogue: dans une caverne, un philosophe fend d'un poignard la soutane d'un abbé et, à sa surprise, découvre les seins d'une femme. "L'héroïne, Agathe, par amour pour son confesseur, se fait admettre sous un habit masculin au séminaire. Le confesseur qui est lui-même devenu prêtre par désespoir amoureux ne peut répondre à cette passion. Agathe part perdre la raison et la vie en Amérique" (cf. Michel Delon, "Combats philosophiques…", 'Raison présente', "Lumières", 1983, p.67-76). "Maréchal venait d'écrire 'Pour et contre La Bible' [brûlot athéiste] et pensa qu'il fallait rendre sa critique plus populaire. Constatant l'énorme succès de 'Thérèse philosophe', il résolut d'écrire un roman par lettres où une jeune fille tombée amoureuse d'un prêtre est chassée du séminaire lorsque la liaison est révélée et est recueilli par un philanthrope adversaire des religions et adepte de la Nature, porte-parole de Maréchal lui-même (...). Un livre à la fois parfaitement libertin et d'esprit révolutionnaire. La redécouverte actuelle de la littérature libertine et des Lumières ne peut ignorer ce chef-d'oeuvre du genre" (Ed. Coda, 2009). Mentre aspettavo l'arrivo del treno, però, continuavo a riflettere su quelle parole che esprimevano, ancora una volta, l'atteggiamento di superbia tipico dei devoti: quello slogan, infatti, presupponeva la mancanza di valori in persone che, come me, non credono in Dio." Da molti intellettuali tedeschi è stato definito un «manuale necessario» per liberarsi dalle follie a cui l'individuo si abbandona nel nome di una fede: oscurantismo, superstizione, intolleranza, violenza, senso di colpa, paura della sessualità, anti-secolarismo. Nell'affrontare tematiche complesse e spinose - l'attendibilità della Bibbia, il mito del "peccato originale", le incongruenze dei Vangeli, la fede come aspirina, il dualismo anima/corpo, l'ora di religione a scuola, l'eutanasia, l'ambiguità del rapporto fra religione e potere - il filosofo Philipp Möller sceglie il taglio semplice della divulgazione, raccontando esperienze dirette e riportando le opinioni di esperti e personaggi chiamati in causa sotto forma di dialogo. La critica arguta alle Chiese e alle religioni, fondata su statistiche e dati verificati, non è mai un attacco astioso, ma una presa d'atto di elementi e fenomeni incontestabili. Un pamphlet avvincente, che affida all'anticlericalismo contemporaneo non tanto il compito di "dare addosso" alla religione, quanto piuttosto di difendere a spada tratta la laicità dello Stato e delle istituzioni.
