Oxford: John Basket 1727. Hardcover. Folio. Modern rebind in black leatherette with gilt spine lettering and new endpapers. Unpaginated. Two engraved frontispieces historiated initials two small engravings single large foldout map "Map shewing ye Situation of Paradice". Modern rebind is pristine and tight; text block very good overall with only the first few and last few leaves a tad edgeworn and age toned else remainder quite bright and clean with only very occasional touches of foxing and occasional discreet vintage mends; small chip to lower corner of first frontispiece not touching image; map shows paper loss along right and bottom portions the whole neatly remounted to full-size sheet. Attractive early printing of this Oxford Bible first produced by the King's Printer Baskett in 1716 and whose son Thomas later produced them mid-century -- not a so-called "Vinegar Bible" the famous typographical error in Luke XX noting the "parable of the vinegar" corrected here to "vineyard." Other than "To the Most High and Might Prince James" opening single leaf the "Translouters to the Reader" section addressing the editions consulted and the entire text that follows is done in two-column format. The Old Testament and Apocrypha are followed by the sectional title page and frontispiece for the New Testament concluding with a lengthy index and foldout map. Inner flyleaf bears 18th century ownership signature of "Tomas Hawkes / His Book." A lovely handleable copy of this large lectern Bible hence " Appointed to be Read in Churches". Interestingly laid loose into this copy is a quite lovely unsigned 9" X 13½" ink-and-wash drawing of a small cottage on a hillside in the foreground with rolling countryside in the distance along with other ephemeral fragments used as place markers in this Bible: an 1849 receipt from draper and grocer John Sneath of Wragby England and several odd scraps torn from books and a newspaper ten pages from a tiny hymnal and portions of a letterhead and invitation. Wood engraved title pages and 30 plates plus two maps hand coloured in outline some light foxing at the beginning and end marbled endpapers contemporary manuscript recording the 18th century birth dates of Henry Mary and Mary Ann Ceaplen. Contemporary tree calf gilt initials "H.C.M." and "M.A.C." to the covers some light wear recently rebacked retaining the original red morocco label. The only Bible printed in Lewes and very scarce. With two examples of embroidered Berlin wool work laid in one with initals "SAB Oct. 29 1859" and the other an alter scene. Royal 8vo. The bible of Sophia Augusta Brown 1825-1909 wife of John Carter Brown herself an active bibliophile who helped her husband build his library and oversaw its stewardship after his death. Sophia Augusta was 34 and John Carter Brown 61 when they married after a brief courtship on June 23 1859. That event is recorded in the family record between the Old and New Testaments as are the births and marriages of the couple's three children--John Nicholas Brown Harold Brown and Sophia Augusta--the marriages of the two sons and the death of John Carter Brown "dearly loved Husband & Father" on June 10 1874. The younger Sophia Augusta Brown married banker and businessman William Watts Sherman 1842-1912 whose Newport RI house is an architectural landmark.<br /> <br /> The daughter of Patrick Browne an Anglo-Irish jurist and member of Her Majesty's Council of the Bahamas and Harriet Thayer of Providence a direct descendant of Roger Williams Sophia Augusta Brown was "an indomitable force in an era when women were discovering a role for themselves in the charitable sector . For Sophia Augusta perpetuating her husband's mission through the sound management and enhancement of his collection was her way of contributing to the advancement of knowledge and understanding among peoples . From her sons' earliest age Sophia Augusta ensured they would develop an appreciation for the care condition and housing of books . John Nicholas and Harold often accompanied their mother to booksellers and private collectors. At an early age they were shown priceless works: a Columbus letter the papers of Leonardo daVinci a note by Galileo . On his trips to Europe as an adult John Nicholas was expected to report back . with his assessment of the books he encountered . When he turned 22 in 1883 Sophia Augusta entrusted him with the care of the library" Sylvia Brown Grappling with Legacy: Rhode Island's Brown Family and the American Philanthropic Impulse 2017. While her husband was still alive Sophia Augusta oversaw the construction in 1862 of the fireproof library wing in the Nightingale-Brown House which remained the site of the library until it was relocated to its current home at Brown University at the impetus of John Nicholas Brown's will. Front and rear boards a solid very good though spine is rough and scuffed with "Holy Bible" black calf label half present; delicate front hinge strengthened with old but neat brown cloth tape to endpaper gutter; tight and clean text block occasionally age toned and mildly foxed mostly to preliminary leaves. A rustic but decent and handleable copy of this edition stereotyped by J. Howe and based on the fifth Dublin edition. Of great interest is the 8-page "Family Record" section between the Old and New Testaments blank leaves filled in most in brown ink some in pencil recording the family births deaths and marriages of the family of noted Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary sister Mary Aquin Martin 1860- who became Mother of the Convent and Academy of the Visitation in St. Louis by 1921. At one point the family records "Mary Martin Born Feb. 5th 1860" and elsewhere "Mary Martin entered Visitation Convent at St Louis December 17th 1878 professed March 19th 1881." This cloistered Roman Catholic women's order was founded in 1610 by St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane Francis de Chantal in Annecy France. Laid in loose are a fascinating small archive of family documents: Two additional "Family Record" pages apparently from a different Bible a fine 4¼" X 6½" heavy stock cabinet card St. Louis: F.W. Guerin Photographer on backstamp showing a young handwritten label at bottom "Sr. Mary Aquin Martin / Mary Martin 1877" likely misdated since she entered the convent the following year a superb half-length of the young novitiate in her habit; "Reward of Merit" card for her younger brother John H. Martin recorded in family record as born in 1862 as "left Dubuque for Butte City Montana April 9th 1885 Arrived there April 16th 1885" and died in 1890; two partly-printed 1876 "First Communion" cards for her younger brother James T. Martin recorded in family record as born in 1865 married in 1909 and died in 1919; 1883 "first holy communion" slip for her younger sister Laura Martin recorded in the family record as born in 1870 and also as entering the Visitation Convent on October 4th 1893; and lastly a printed funeral card for Irish-born reverend Michael O'Donnell who died at Pleasant Grove Iowa at age 28 in 1879. An acceptable copy of this uncommon Bible and with fascinating family history record and documents from the family of a notable member of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. Doré's "Bible was enthusiastically sponsored by one of the greatest French publishers of illustrated books of the day… Its original reception was truly remarkable… A second edition of the Bible was called for almost at once… Editions appeared in almost every European country… One of the first off the mark was an English edition from Cassell Petter and Galpin 1867. Bound in full dark blue straight-grained morocco covers tooled in gilt with wide Greek key and drawer handle border with floral cornerpieces narrow gilt filet-bordered rectangles tooled all over with drawer handle and sunburst tools and semé off small dots with central gilt-stamped L with crown spine with six double raised bands titled in one compartment stamped with owner's name "Frederic Powys" in another and the rest richly gilt a.e.g. pink endsheets by Staggemeier and Welcher with their circular pink paper label on front pastedown. Front joint and headcap with conservation repairs of the highest quality light foxing to text. The third variant of the Subscriber's list with the most names ending with that of the Hon. Charles York Esq Attorney General. 1146 pp. 1 vols. Folio. The 1763 edition of Baskerville's Bible has always been recognised as his masterpiece and is one of the high-points in the history of printing in Britain. This beautiful and monumental binding can be closely dated because Thomas Powys formerly MP for Northamptonshire was created Baron Lilford in 1797 and Staggemeier & Welcher are recorded in partnership on Villiers Street as of 1799. By 1810 Welcher was in business alone at that address. The Hon and Rev. Frederic Powys whose name appears on the spine was the third son of the first Lord Lilford; he married in 1807. Whether the binding was commissioned for his taking holy orders or on the occasion of his marriage can only be conjectured. A landmark of printing in a splendid binding. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England. 8 1279 1; 186 2 pp. plus terminal blank. 1 vols. 4to signed in 8's 195 x 143mm. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England with the Scholia the scarce printing in quarto format. The text is derived from the Sixtine text and edited by John Biddle 1615-1662 the Unitarian controversialist who was imprisoned by the Parliamentary Commissioners for his religious views. <br /> The SCHOLIA . has a separate title-leaf register and pagination. The same setting was imposed in both quarto and octavo formats the latter with rules separating the columns of text. In regard to institutional representation the edition in quarto is much more uncommon than that in octavo: ESTC locates 4 copies of the quarto printing in North America as opposed to 19 of the octavo printing. Occasionally Daniel's reprint of the New Testament is bound up with the octavo printings to form a complete Bible. Brunet cites that format but notes the sale of a copy on "Gr. Pap." presumably a copy in this format. Over the last 35 years ABPC records sale of one copy in quarto 1999 and four in octavo.
