Edited by Johann Kusthuert this printing of the Epistles of Paul was intended for the student market with the introduction addressed to studiosis sacarum litterarum tyronibus. In addition the colophon reads: Impressum ad altissimi Dei laudem ac studiosorum Sacre Scripture tyronum perfectum in officina libraria prouidi viri Vuolffgangi Stockel ciuis Liptzensis anno Domini 1510 quarto kalendis Septembris.<br /> <br /> The annotations and marginal gloss are impressive and very similar though in a different hand to the copy described by Rosenthal now at the Beinecke suggesting they are by a student at the same institution: "The present copy comes with a vast manuscript apparatus in Latin covering the entire text from St. Jerome's general preface to the last sentence of the last epistle. The annotation . is uniformly intense throughout. The script is a very small at times microscopic Germanic cursive and there is evidence of careful layout especially in the marginal gloss." Estimating the annotations to be approximately 80000 words Rosenthal describes the interlinear notes as "frequently far more than simole reading aids." He continues: "The marginal gloss includes an argumentum for each chapter and its subdivisions . There are also occasional citations from authorities such as St. Thomas and Ambrose."<br /> <br /> It is a handsomely printed volume with the title in large red letters above an 11-line subtitle in black. The verso of the title comprises a table of contents of the Pauline epistles and is followed by an introduction by Kusthuert.<br /> <br /> On the duplicates sold by the Munich royal library including the present volume see: Wagner Bettina. "'Duplum Bibliothecae Regiae Monacensis': The Munich Court Library and Its Book Auctions in the Nineteenth Century." The Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America vol. 111 no. 3 2017 pp. 345-77. Pintard 1759-1844 was a prominent New Yorker of Huguenot origin patron of education and one of the earliest and staunchest advocates for the preservation and study of the history of New York and the United States. Pintard began to work towards the establishment of a historical society in the city in early 1804 and he was the leader in the organization of the New-York Historical Society in November 1804. He was also a patron of the old French Huguenot Church of St. Esprit and the General Theological Seminary to whom he donated this volume in 1826.<br /> <br /> Scarce. The text is derived from the Sixtine text and edited by John Biddle 1615-1662 the Unitarian controversialist who was imprisoned by the Parliamentary Commissioners for his religious views. <br /> <br /> "Roger Daniel's version of the text of the Sixtine edition was prepared for the use of the scholars at Westminster School. This appeared in 1653 and was edited by the Socinian John Biddle. Its publication may have owed something to the interest in the Septuagint generated by Codex Alexandrinus and the frustration produced by the failure of Young's attempts to edit it" S. First edition of Hill's translation; the work was re-issued entirely in Mohawk in 1836. Named Kenweneshon by the wolf clan of the Mohawk Henry Aaron Hill d. 1834 was the son of David Hill and Christiana Brant the daughter of Joseph Brant. He served as interpreter at councils of the Six Nations and conducted services at the Mohawk chapel in Brantford. In the 1820s he began translating the gospels for publication.<br /> <br /> "Joseph Brant's Gospel of St Mark had been appended to an SPG Mohawk prayer-book printed in 1787 and John Norton's Gospel of St John had been published by the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1804. Despite adverse comments on the quality of the translation Norton encouraged by the SPG resumed the work of completing the gospels and he enlisted Hill's aid. But Norton was tiring of the task and thought that the Mohawks themselves would prefer English bibles. The American Bible Society discovered in 1823 that Hill with the support of John Brant Tekarihogen was already working on Luke and proposed that he complete the four gospels . Hill proved to be a diligent worker. His Luke appeared in 1828 the title page says 1827 but the printer in New York Azor Hoyt had much trouble in setting the work. Three hundred and fifty copies were sent to the Methodist mission on the Grand and fifty to Lower Canada. The Church of England holding aloof from association with dissenters in bible societies made little use of the translations done by its catechist. In turn the American Bible Society's interest waned. The York Auxiliary Bible Society formed in 1828 saw that some Mohawk scriptures were already available and began work on Ojibwa translations instead. The continued publication of Mohawk scriptures was therefore undertaken by the Young Men's Bible Society of New York an auxiliary to the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. Between 1831 and 1836 it sponsored translation of the rest of the New Testament with the exception of 2 Corinthians. The bulk of the work was done by Hill with corrections and completions Hill died in 1834 by Brantford merchant John Aston Wilkes Mohawk schoolmaster William Hess and Elizabeth Kerr née Brant. Hill's Isaiah finished by Hess was published by the American Bible Society in 1839 but that organization resisted pressure to proceed with the rest of the Old Testament. Hill was also the chief translator of a collection of psalms and hymns which went through separate printings for its Methodist and Anglican users" Dictionary of Canadian Biography. Laid into full green pebbled morocco drop box. WITH A CONTEMPORARY FORE-EDGE BY LEWIS of flowers centering on a quotation within a wreath "Blessed is he that word faded" and signed Lewis fecit 1656.". 12mo 169 x 115 mm. With a most unusual contemporary watercolor painting on the fore edge of the book displaying a design of flower and acorns surrounding a central green wreath which encloses the following inscription: "March 13 1665 Martha White Order my Aedes in thy Word ps: 119 " According to Webber in 1001 Fore-edge Paintings p. 12 the earliest date on a fore-edge painting by Lewis is a 1651 Bible now in NYPL dated 1653 on fore-edge and similarily depicts flower animals and a motto. VERY EARLY AND RARE<br /> <br /> Signed by the London firm of Stephen and Thomas Lewis the earliest known bindery to paint both the firm's name and a year directly on the fore-edge paintings. Their fore-edges were typical of the time featuring elements from nature such as flowers animals or birds and they incorporated ofdten a wreath as here with a quote from Scriptures. This copy is additionally enhanced by its contemporary ownership by a woman reader. Provenance: contemporary ownership inscriptions of Martha Reyner "Martha Reyner her Booke with the price 0-18" front flyleaf and "Martha Thompson Her Book Ano Domini 1705 et Praetorum huius drawing of a bird." In a fleece-lined green morocco folding case. Rebacked with original spine laid down top headband partly frayed one nick to leather on front cover some slight fading of gilt E.T. Thomas' quarto bible was published in three distinct issues: with 2 copperplates only i.e. frontispieces to the Old and New Testaments; with two copperplates and John Brown's 89-page concordance in the rear; and the rarest and most deluxe form as here with 48 copperplates and the concordance. Of this last issue according to Thomas's catalogue the work was published "in elegant binding." The explanation for the work being complete with 48 plates rather than the 50 plates of the folio Thomas bible of the same year is easily explained: the frontispieces used for the folio bible plates I and XXXIII were too large for the quarto edition and thus were omitted with plates XXIX and XLVIII used as frontispieces of the quarto bible instead.<br /> <br /> A very difficult edition to find in a contemporary unsophisticated binding. Worn upper cover nearly detached. Foxing. Early inked stamp of P.A. Johnson Bookseller & Stationer Morristown N.J. on front pastedown and with ownership inscription on ffep: "Henry Mingle's Bible bought of Peter A. Johnson in Morristown October 28 1812. 4 1080 72pp. Complete with 50 illustrations plate at p. 916 is detached and tattered at edges and plate at 932 is detached and with considerably trimmed. Early entries on the family register by the Mingle family. Sectional titles for the OT and NT 1811 Apocrypha and Brown's Brief Concordance as issued. 4to. In 1804 Carey first published a new edition of the quarto Bible from standing type and including the Apocrypha. A consummate promoter and bookseller Carey re-issued the Bible on a variety of paper stocks and with various numbers of engraved maps and plates over the next decade. An 1809 advertisement listed 34 variations of his "Family Bible" priced between $3.50 and $12 however none of those listed include more than 30 engraved maps and plates suggesting this issue with 50 engraved maps and plates and including the Old Testament New Testament Psalms Apocrypha and Brown's Concordance to be among the most deluxe version yet issued by Carey. We find no record of Carey's quarto bible with 50 plates as here.<br /> <br /> With an early Morristown New Jersey bookseller stamp and provenance to the Mingle family of Warren County New Jersey. Italian full red morocco binding of the seventeenth or early eighteenth century elaborately gilt with triple floral scrollwork borders stars in cornerpieces about a central motif stencilled paste paper endsheets a.e.g. Boxed. First edition of the Sixtine Vulgate Bible large paper copy. Engraved illustrated title-page. Title in red and black text in double columns. 3 vols. Folio. The engraved title reads: Biblia sacra vulgatae editionis ad concilii Tridentini praescriptum emendata et a Sixto V.P.M. recognata et approbata.<br /> With the preliminary document the Bull of Sixtus V beginning 'Aeternus ille caelestium terrestriumq. rerum omnium conditr ac moderator Deus .". This is often lacking.<br /> <br /> An extraordinary copy of the Sixtine Bible containing the Vulgate text as edited by Pope Sixtus V intended as the first ecclesiastically authorized text to be used throughout Christendom. "In its text it comes closer to R. Stephanus' Bible of 1538-40 than to the Louvain editions" Darlow & Moule who discuss the textual variations. This copy includes examples of the printed overslips required to correct hurried printing. The association with Aldus II suggested by Renouard and lasting long thereafter is spurious.<br /> Pope Sixtus V died soon after the book was printed and was followed by three short-lived popes. The Sixtine Bible had "aroused antagonism among both clergy and laity" and was swiftly condemned; the edition was withdrawn by Pope Clement VIII soon after his elevation to the papal throne in 1592 and many copies were destroyed. Preparations began in 1591 for a new edition of the Vulgate printed in 1592 and known as the Clementine Bible which long remained the standard Vulgate text.<br /> <br /> The ordinary issue of this printing measures 13-3/8 inches tall as in the Brooker copy sold 2024; the present copy measures 15-3/4.<br /> <br /> AN OUTSTANDING LARGE PAPER COPY OF A NOTABLE EDITION. Ff. 8 CCCXXV 1 LXXXVII i.e. 85 5. 1 vols. Folio. The first Protestant Bible in Latin edited by Johan Rüdel Rudelius printed in Cologne by Peter Quentel or Quentell and notable for the wood engraved illustrations by Anton Woensam Anton von Worms particularly those at the head of each of the four gospels. Matthew faces an angle who is touching his stylus; a lion is seated beside Mark; a bull with Luke; and an eagle stands beside John.<br /> <br /> Quentel was the printer of Tyndale's quarto Cologne English New Testament known from a single surviving fragment in the Grenville Collection where this same illustration to Matthew appears. It is a reasonable inference that each of the four gospels would have carried an illustration. The project which had "'got as far as the letter K' the signature that would have taken the work well into Mark" ODNB was unfinished at the time of Tyndale's flight from Cologne in 1525. Quentel's print shop was raided but sheets of the first gospel translated from the original Greek and printed in English soon began to circulate in England. Tyndale settled in Worms where Schöffer completed an octavo printing of the first complete English New Testament in 1526 a facsimile of the Grenville fragment and its illustration were published in 1871.<br /> <br /> The blocks for the illustrations evidently survived the raid on the Quentel's shop and are used here at the head of each of the four gospels.<br /> <br /> A notable edition in the history of the printing of the Bible. Some light toning and spotting. Expertly rebacked by Bernard Middleton with old backstrip laid down hinges relined. An attractive copy. In 1758 Baskerville proposed the casting of a new set of Greek types to the Oxford University Press and they ordered 2000 copies of this octavo New Testament plus 500 in quarto to be printed with the resulting type - which ended up being its only use. Negative critical reception may have contributed to its abandonment but Baskerville&rsquo;s Greek face has recently been reassessed by Gerry Leonidas as an important predecessor of more modern types if perhaps not quite as elegant as that used by the Foulis press that had fallen afoul of an arbitrary typographic orthodoxy. George Borrow 1803-1881 spent most of his thirties as a representative of the British and Foreign Bible Society first in Russia and then in the Iberian Peninsula from 1835 to 1840. "In Spain civil war made his expeditions risky while the hostile attitude of the authorities coupled with his own provocative approach led twice to his imprisonment. . In Madrid the Bible Society financed the printing of St Luke's gospel translated into Spanish Romani by Borrow and Gypsy friends" ODNB. His account of his adventures The Bible in Spain 1843 was his first literary success. Other works included Lavengro The Romany Rye and Wild Wales.<br /> <br /> These are a set of Borrow's marked proofs for this second edition of the Gospel of St. Luke first printed in Madrid 1837. Gathering C is marked Revise May 27/72 with five corrections on pp. 59 and 69; gathering B is marked 2nd Revise Aug. 9/71 and corrects the running head Majaro to Majaró on the left hand pages with some 22 corrections to the text; gathering E is marked 10th Revise Feb. 9/72 with one marginal note on p. 116. <br /> Of this 1871 proof OCLC records only the copy at the Huntington with corrections in George Borrow's hand bound in polished brown calf marbled end-papers gilt top; purchased from Maggs Cat. 1924 item 443. Collie and Fraser note a handful of other proofs citing copies at Fales NYU Berg NYPL Brotherton Leeds Liverpool and in the Norfolk Record Office Norwich.<br /> A rare proof from Borrow's late career returning to a work from his early adventures.
