Southfield House Watford 19 Jan.-4 Sept. 1882. 1882. Oblong folio 12 x 19 inches: original manuscript journal of a voyage around the world from London to Liverpool overland through France by boat through the Suez canal to Colombo along the south coast of Australia across the Pacific to San Francisco then overland by train to New York and by boat back to Liverpool written in black and red ink and illustrated throughout with original watercolours contemporary photographs and maps some spotting edges a bit frayed. Contemporary padded morocco gilt covers detached; recent expert reback with new leather reattaching and preserving original boards. BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED SCRAPBOOK OF A LATE 19TH CENTURY VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD. Mary Esther Smith and her husband John James Smith 1813-1903 were accompanied by at least four children of his first marriage and their own daughter Ella Marianne born 1862. The detailed journal begins with a map "shewing the Lines of Communication carried on by the Steamers of the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company" annotated with the couple's route: "Our route in the French mail differed a little from the black line marked for the P. & O. Steamers and is marked by a red line. From Marseilles to Colombo by French ship Yankse bound for China. From Galle to Adelaide by Peninsular and Oriental S.S Clyde. From Adelaide by Orient SS Sorato". The first of Mary Smith's watercolours is of the island of Capri after which their boat takes them across the Mediterranean and through the Suez Canal her account of which is illustrated by 5 large souvenir photographs and 4 watercolours of boats passing through the canal Mount Sinai the twelve apostles in the Red Sea and Aden. The Smiths then travel to Colombo in Ceylon and Mary's account of their two weeks there is accompanied by 19 souvenir photographs and 4 watercolours including views of the Ferguson family plantation at Abbotsford and Pedric Talagale the highest peak in Ceylon. From Galle the family group sailed to King George's Sound in Western Australia: "The Clyde was to make a quick run from Galle to King George's sound and worked very hard against current and trade winds. She reached King George's Sound on the 14th March having taken 11 days & 4 hours - quicker than anything but the Carthage - which they said was allowed any amount of coal.". Mary Smith has annotated a copy of Collins' map of Australia with their route from Albany to Adelaide and on to Melbourne the across the Bass Strait to Tasmania overland to Hobart and then by boat to Eden in New South Wales to Sydney and then on to Auckland in New Zealand. Their journey along the southern coast of Australia is illustrated with 2 watercolours of Adelaide 11 photographs of Melbourne 9 photographs and 6 watercolours of Tasmania including a map of the area around Hobart 6 photographs and 2 watercolours of Sydney and the Blue Mountains: "Mr. Walter Howard took us a long drive up into the range of hills about six miles behind Adelaide. We slept at a village called Woodside. The next morning the rest went to see a gold mine and I sketched the road leading thro' the village for the sake of a study of gum trees". By the 18th of May the Smith party embarked the "City of New York" to Auckland in New Zealand. They explored both the North and South islands for a month by coach train and boat and Mary Smith includes 12 photographs and 2 watercolours. Once on board the "Penguin" they sailed across the Pacific to Honolulu where she painted the wharf arriving in San Francisco on July 10th. Mary Smith includes four fine watercolours of the Yosemite and two photos. The family travel across America by Chicago & North-Western Railway stopping in Salt Lake City 1 watercolour and 2 photos across 600 miles of prairie one watercolour of "any mile of the 600" to Denver 3 photos with a detour to Maniton Springs which includes a fine watercolour view of Pike's Peak from the station and part of the Gardens of the Gods. Having crossed the Missouri on the 22nd of August they arrived in Niagara on the 28th. Mary includes five large photos of the Falls easily the most spectacular sight of her tour and one large watercolour. Across Lake Ontario to Toronto then Montreal and Quebec from where they travelled south by train and boat across Lakes Champlain and George. and down the Hudson from Albany to New York. 2 photos and 3 watercolours. They crossed the Atlantic from the 24th of August aboard the "Adriatic" and arrived in Liverpool on the 3rd of September arriving safely back home to Southfield House Watford on the 4th.
