The spine is slightly faded. The head & tail of the spine & of the rear fold are lightly chipped. The panels are slightly bumped with a very light stain to the top corner of the front panel. Laid into the case along with a 28-page booklet printed on cream stock are 8 plates in black & gray. The title page of the booklet is slightly bumped else the contents are near fine. Very good. <p>Although some oil paintings and watercolors were included in the exhibition most of the works were etchings drawings and engravings as well as theatre and magazine posters. Edward McKnight Kauffer although an American is considered one of the most important graphic designers in Britain in the first half of the 20th century. He had come to Europe to develop a career as a painter but stranded in England with the onset of WW1 he decided to stay. In need of an income he tried his hand as a graphic designer and was lucky enough to get commissions from Frank Pickof London Transport. He became its most prolific poster designer. Although best known as a designer of advertisements and posters - a neglected but not at all insignificant part of his output - both when he was in England and after he returned to America in 1939 was his designing book jackets. One of the first artists to work in this media he produced challenging modernist designs which stood out from others particularly when compared with the realistic often romanticised images then current in the States. This book is the first on this aspect of his work including illustrations of some 250 jackets and an account of the publishers who commissioned them. Contains 104 silver gelatin photographs measuring between 1" x 1¾" and 9" x 5". Covers lightly rubbed several photos with creases or tiny tears many having been cut down to varying extent from larger photos very good overall. <br /> <br /> A photo album compiled by Sophie Ruth Knowles 1892-1968 during her time at Wellesley College from about 1912 to 1914. Sophie attended Wellesley for three years before graduating from Adelphi College in New York. The first page includes a mounted leaf with Sophie’s Signature in ink presumably taken from the original album. Wellesley College is a private women’s liberal arts college in Wellesley Massachusetts. Several photos depict one of Wellesley’s traditions hoop rolling as well as several theatrical productions including Gilbert and Sullivans “The Mikadoâ€. Other activities include a Maypole rowing volleyball and dancing. One page includes a few photos from the girls dorm rooms. The album concludes with several photographs showing the grounds and architecture around the campus. <br /> <br /> A lovely album showing the camaraderie amongst the young women attending an all girls college in the early part of the 20th century at the dawn of WWI. unknown‎

ONE OF 60 COPIES. 65 x 45 mm. 2 1/2 x 1 3/4". 20 pp. 1 leaf. <br/> Quarter red leather over patterned paper boards flat spine lettered in gilt Dutch gilt endpapers.<br /> With a leaf from the Kleine Print miniature bible containing an excellent engraving of Jezebel and Jehu from 2 Kings 9. DeHamel and Silver "Disbound and Dispersed" 196.5. See also: Welsh 938; Spielmann 280. The book in mint condition the inserted leaf just slightly browned at edges but fine and fresh.<br/> <br/> This charming little leaf book pays tribute to a very rare miniature Bible published around 1750 in The Hague. Composed entirely of engravings printed on one side only the work is a masterpiece of small-scale printing. In the words of the Spielmann Catalogue "Many of the scenes depicted in the original Bible are of astounding beauty considering the tiny scale upon which the artist had to work." The genesis of the present leaf book was the acquisition by the noted miniature book collector Ruth E. Adomeit 1910-96 of a fragment of 61 leaves from this Bible which she obtained during a European trip in 1953. Our copy contains an engraving showing the meeting between the military commander Jehu and the wicked Queen Jezabel which ends with Jezebel's being thrown from a window by her eunuchs. We see her mid-fall and upside down in the present image while Jehu watches triumphantly from his chariot. Not surprisingly given its small print run this item is not commonly seen for sale.
