(WELCH, Joseph Nye and Ruth Suckow)
1914 Cyclone Grinnell College
Grinnell Iowa: Grinnell College 1914. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Large quarto. 239pp. Illustrated from photographs and drawings. Beveled green cloth gilt. Slight wear on the boards very good or better. Yearbook from the prominent Iowa college the Class of 1914 featured at least two members who gained prominence in the future: prolific Iowa novelist Ruth Suckow picture p.88 and attorney Joseph Nye Welch picture p.90 who upbraided Joseph McCarthy in the Army-McCarthy Hearings and which action was generally seen as the breaking point for the reign of intimidation and hypocrisy known as McCarthyism. Both Welch and Suckow make several appearances in the book perhaps not surprisingly as Welch was editor-in-chief and Suckow one of the other three editors. Grinnell College hardcover

01 [Artist's Book] Leavitt, Nancy Ruth | Emily Dickinson
HOPE is the Thing with Feathers
Stillwater ME: Nancy Ruth Leavitt 2018. 14-1/2" x 10-7/8." Numbered 1 of 2 variants and signed by Leavitt. A full cloth box with recessed manuscript paper label on the front; the box opens into a diptych with batik fabric as a background to both sides. Recessed into the right side is Leavitt's hand-lettered rendering of Dickinson's poem on handmade paper by New England papermaker Katie MacGregor. Opposite is a collage of hand-cut paper layered into blossoms feathery leaves and stems sewn in silk—all of which is in white. Bright and unworn. <br /> <br /> Quite a remarkable presentation of the beloved Dickinson poem. A supremely gifted lettering artist Leavitt's manuscript version of the poem done in white gouache on MacGregor's green paper gives Dickinson's words a lightness that is echoed across the diptych with the white dimensional blossoms on the rich green blue and pink fabric with verdant shapes of flowers and foliage. The hand-cut blossoms with their ethereal stems seem to float on the backdrop. It is a beautiful celebration of that quality that Pandora managed to keep in her box. It seems fitting that Leavitt and Dickinson's "hope" is also held in this box. Nancy Ruth Leavitt unknown

[ Froebel ]. Sibley, Ruth
Collection of ephemera relating to a beginning kindergarten teacher.
<p>New York: Froebel League of New York City 1912-1915 The date on the employment contract indicates that Ruth Sibley was hired by the Froebel League of New York City as an assistant in the kindergarten in May 1912. The two letters between Sibley and Isabella Goodrich Breckenridge the secretary of the Froebel League indicate that Sibley departed in May of 1914 seemingly for another teaching position. Breckenridge expresses her appreciation for Sibley's work with the organization. It also seems that Sibley took the test for her teacher's license in June of 1913 though it's unclear whether she achieved her license at that time. White tan and buff paper leaves. . With eleven pieces of ephemera: two ALS in envelopes three invitations to events held by the Froebel League of New York City one typed and signed employment contract for the Froebel League a brochure on the Department of Education of New York City kindergarten teacher's license exam and the sixteenth annual report of the Froebel League April 1915. Some toning and creasing. Scrapbook glue remnants on versos of a few items. A very good set of ephemera documenting a kindergarten teacher's employment by the Froebel League of New York City. The Froebel League of New York City was comprised of a kindergarten; training classes for teachers mothers and governesses; and lectures in literature science music and more. The goal of the organization was both to teach children in a classroom environment and provide mothers and other caretakers with the tools to teach children at home. The organization taught courses in educational theory using Froebel's Mother Play Education of Man and The Pedagogics of the Kindergarten as central texts as well as courses in philosophy psychology childhood development and health. The Froebel League employed many women educators including Susan Blow Vassar College professor and physician Dr. Elizabeth B. Thelberg and University of Chicago professor Ella Flagg Young.</p> Froebel League of New York City,

[African Americana]: [Alabama]: Boatwright, Ruth
The Origin and Development of the Negro Visiting Teacher in Alabama: A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science
Tuskegee Al: Tuskegee Institute 1949. Very good. vi66pp. carbon copy typescript printed on rectos only. Contemporary red buckram gilt spine titles. Minor soiling and edge wear to boards corners bumped. An official copy of Ruth Boatwright's Tuskegee Institute Masters thesis signed by her advisor Robert Reid and two Tuskegee administrators Dean Alonzo Davis and the Chairman of the Graduate Committee R.W. Brown. As usual the thesis includes an introduction literature review background on the topic and a summary with findings. At the outset of the summary Boatwright states that her thesis was intended "to trace the development of visiting teacher services in the United States and in the state of Alabama so that the findings might be of benefit to persons seeking to make possible the expansion of Negro visiting teacher services in Alabama for neglected Negro boys and girls." Among the reasonable findings Boatwright made include that "Negro visiting teachers get better results in dealing with Negro boys and girls than white visiting teachers" and "There are too few Negro visiting teachers in Alabama one worker for every 3000 children."<br /> <br /> The text is supplemented throughout with maps tables and charts; among the supplemental material are questionnaires employed by Boatwright in her research." The work was later privately printed by the author through Vantage Press in 1975.<br /> <br /> OCLC records just one other copy of Boatwright's original thesis retained by Tuskegee and the University of Alabama holds a copy. THE EVENING BLAT: One heavy cardstock leaf folded into 4 pages approx. 11-by-14 inches. This one entirely handwritten and illustrated no clippings with wonderfully executed lettering and drawings. THE WISHING HORSE OF OZ
Chicago: The Reilly & Lee Co 1935. First edition. Near fine in very good dust jacket. First printing of this Oz story that finds Ozma the Wizard and other rulers whisked away by a suspicious man and a magical horse. THE WISHING HORSE OF OZ is the final Oz title to feature color plates: due to cost-cutting the books that followed were only published with black-and-white illustrations. WISHING HORSE is also the only book in the original Oz series not to have its own endpaper illustrations though later editions borrow a design from THE TIN WOODMAN OF OZ. The book is quite fresh thanks in part to retaining its original dust jacket. 9'' x 6.5''. Original green cloth boards with color pictorial paste-on to front board. Original price-clipped color pictorial dust jacket. 12 color plates and various black-and-white illustrations. 298 pages. Small owner stamp to front flyleaf "M. F. Jacket with large chip to upper spine affecting "The / Wishing" in title; spine with mild sunning one tiny closed tear to rear panel. Binding with a touch of bumping to spine ends. Sharp.
