‎Gruber Ruth‎

‎I Went to the Soviet Arctic‎

‎New York: Simon and Schuster. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. very nice copy the book itself just lightly worn at the spine ends and bottom corners actually a review copy with the original publisher's reply postcard laid in; jacket has just one tiny chip and a couple of itsy-bitsy tears at the bottom of the front panel light soiling on the rear panel. The first book by this veteran journalist and photographer who went on assignment from the New York Herald Tribune for whom she had been reporting since 1932 to investigate "the status of women in the Soviet Union." In the course of her travels she covered 6000 miles by plane and boat making observations and conducting "countless interviews with all classes and types from high government officials to Trotskyists and exiled kulaks." Ms. Gruber who lived to the grand old age of 105 she died in 2016 was deeply involved during and immediately after World War II with the fortunes of Jewish refugees in particular with a secret mission undertaken on behalf of the U.S. Government to bring 1000 refugees to the United States. Her 1983 book "Haven" about this episode served as the basis for a 2001 TV-movie starring Natasha Richardson as Gruber. She also wrote a number of books about Israel during the country's formative years. She was also the subject of a documentary AHEAD OF TIME released in 2010 and there have been several museum exhibits of her photojournalism. NOTE that this book is slightly heavier than average and therefore additional shipping charges will apply for international shipping or for Priority Mail service in the U.S.; if this concerns you please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. . ‎Ahead of Time; My Early Years As a Foreign Correspondent‎

‎New York: Wynwood Press 1991. First Edition stated presumed first printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Robert Brown Author Photograph. 319 1 pages. Illustrations. Index. Inscribed by the author on the fep. Inscription reads To Gladys and Jack With admiration and affection Ruth Gruber 10/12/91. The author describes her youth in Brooklyn her education at the University of Cologne on the eve of Hitler's reign of terror and her trips to the Soviet Union during Stalin's dictatorship. Ruth Gruber September 30 1911 - November 17 2016 was an American journalist photographer writer humanitarian and United States government official. Born in Brooklyn to Russian Jewish immigrants she was encouraged to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. At age 20 she received a doctorate from the University of Cologne in Germany which was awarded for her dissertation -- in German -- on Virginia Woolf. In the 1930s she established herself as a journalist writing about women under fascism and communism traveling as far as the Soviet Arctic. She also served two years in Alaska as a field representative of the U.S. Department of the Interior. As World War II raged in Europe she turned her attention to the crisis of Jewish refugees: acting on behalf of the Roosevelt administration she escorted 1000 refugees from Italy to the United States and recorded their stories. She witnessed the scene at the Port of Haifa when Holocaust survivors on the ship Exodus 1947 were refused entry to British-controlled Palestine and she documented their deportation back to Germany. In subsequent years she covered the evacuation of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. She was a recipient of the Norman Mailer Prize. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Gruber born in 1911 is not a household name despite her having written 13 books and serving as a foreign correspondent during the 1930s in countless dangerous locales. This memoir is beautifully crafted covering her inner life sensitively as well as educating readers about what it was like to grow up Jewish in a Brooklyn `shtetl' in the early part of the century; to enter New York University as a 15-year-old freshman; to hitchhike to the University of Wisconsin to begin a master's degree in German; to study in Germany at the time of Hitler's ascension; and to explore Europe and the Soviet Arctic as a New York Herald Tribune journalist. This volume recalling her first 25 years is one of the most evocative journalistic autobiographies to appear. Derived from a Kirkus review: Full of record accomplishments—youngest Ph.D. in Germany first American correspondent to travel to the Soviet Arctic—this memoir of her 1920's and 30's by veteran journalist Gruber is high on action. The daughter of Jewish immigrants Gruber was born and raised in Brooklyn where her precocious academic abilities were soon recognized. Encouraged by mentors she excelled first in high school then in college majoring in English and German. Awarded scholarships she went on to graduate school in Wisconsin and at the Univ. of Cologne. There in 1932 where she became at 20 the youngest Ph.D. in Germany she also witnessed the growing power of Hitler and the spread of anti-Semitism. Intent on being a writer Gruber returned to New York but because of the Depression jobs were scarce and she began writing free-lance pieces for the New York Herald Tribune. A travel fellowship enabled her to return to Europe in 1935 as a correspondent for the Tribune to study women under democracy Fascism and Communism which she did by traveling in Germany where old friends had either fled or joined the Nazis; in England where she had a disappointing interview with Virginia Woolf; and in the Soviet Union where she traveled in what we now know as the Gulag first by train then by plane and finally by ship across the Arctic Ocean. A woman to admire with a remarkable story with the darker side of times past. Wynwood Press hardcover‎

‎Destination Palestine: The Story of the Haganah Ship Exodus 1947‎

‎New York: Current Books Inc.; A. A. Wyn Publisher 1948. Reprint. Second printing. Hardcover. Good. No dust jacket. Cover has some wear and soiling. Gruber Ruth Photographer. 134 p. Includes illustrations. Includes an unpaginated 32 p section "The Photographic Story of the: Exodus 1947". Before Leon Uris there was Ruth Gruber. Ruth Gruber born September 30 1911 is an American journalist photographer writer humanitarian and a former United States government official. During World War II Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes appointed Ruth Gruber as his Special Assistant. In this role she carried out a study on the prospects of Alaska for homesteading G.I. s after the war. 5 In 1944 she was assigned a secret mission to Europe to bring one thousand Jewish refugees and wounded American soldiers from Italy to the US. Ickes made her "a simulated general" so in case the military aircraft she flew in was shot down and she was caught by the Nazis she would be kept alive according to the Geneva Convention. 6 Throughout the voyage the Army troop transport Henry Gibbins was hunted by Nazi seaplanes and U-boats. Ruth Gruber's book Haven: The Dramatic Story of 1000 World War II Refugees and How They Came to America was based on case histories she recorded as she interviewed the refugees. Since the US Congress refused to lift the quota on Jewish immigration to the United States from Europe US President Roosevelt acted by executive authority and invited the group of one thousand to visit America. The refugees were to be guests of the President and upon arriving in New York they were transferred to Fort Ontario a decommissioned army training base near Oswego NY and locked behind a chain link fence with barbed wire. While US government agencies argued about whether they should be allowed to stay or at some point be deported to Europe Gruber lobbied to keep them through the end of the war. It was not until January 1946 that the decision was made to allow them to apply for American residency. This was the only attempt by the United States to shelter Jewish refugees during the war. A 2001 film called Haven was based on Gruber's book with Natasha Richardson portraying Ruth Gruber. In 1946 Gruber took leave from her federal post to return to journalism. The New York Post asked her to cover the work of a newly created Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Palestine. The Committee was to decide the fate of 100 000 European Jewish refugees who were living in European camps as displaced persons DP. Harry Truman pressed Great Britain to open the doors of British Mandate of Palestine. The committee members spent four months in Europe Palestine and the Arab countries and another month in Switzerland digesting their experiences. At the end of its deliberations the committee's twelve members unanimously agreed that Britain should allow 100 000 Jewish immigrants to settle in Palestine. British foreign minister Ernest Bevin rejected the finding. Eventually the issue was taken up by the recently established United Nations which appointed a Special Committee on Palestine UNSCOP. Gruber accompanied UNSCOP as a correspondent for the New York Herald. Gruber witnessed the Exodus 1947 ship entering the Haifa harbor after it was attacked by the Royal Navy while making an attempt to deliver 4 500 Jewish refugees. To meet the Exodus refugees Gruber flew to Cyprus where she witnessed and photographed Jewish refugees detained by the British. However the British sent the Exodus prisoners to Port de Bouc in France and Gruber went there. The prisoners refused to disembark and after 18 days standoff the British decided to ship the Jews back to Germany. Out of many journalists from around the world reporting on the affair Ruth Gruber alone was allowed by the British to accompany the DPs back to Germany. Aboard the prison ship Runnymede Park Gruber photographed the refugees confined in a wire cage with barbed wire on top defiantly raising a Union Jack flag on which they had painted a swastika. This was her third book. Current Books, Inc.; A. A. Wyn, Publisher hardcover‎

‎Inside of Time; My Journey From Alaska to Israel‎

‎New York: Carroll & Graf Publishers 2003. First Carroll & Graf edition 2003 stated. Presumed first printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. xvii 1 381 1 pages. Illustrations. Maps. Appendix. Index. Inscribed and dated by the author on the half-title. Ruth Gruber September 30 1911 - November 17 2016 was an American journalist photographer writer humanitarian and a United States government official. She was a recipient of the Norman Mailer Prize. During World War II Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes appointed Gruber as his Special Assistant. In this role she carried out a study on the prospects of Alaska for homesteading G.I.s after the war. In 1944 she was assigned a secret mission to Europe to bring one thousand Jewish refugees and wounded American soldiers from Italy to the US. In 2011 at the age of 100 Ruth Gruber's work as a photojournalist - spanning six decades on four continents - was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the International Center of Photography in New York. The exhibition Ruth Gruber: Photojournalist curated by Maya Benton is traveling internationally through 2020. Derived from a Kirkus review: Intriguing historical circumstances distinguish this memoir by Gruber onetime official in the FDR Administration and a Mideast correspondent during the years that saw the birth of Israel. Gruber begins in 1941 when Harold Ickes asked her to serve as his field representative in Alaska. That not-yet state commands a large portion of Gruber's text as she recalls traveling about the wilderness and taking her own measure of it She also details at length her experiences covering the plight of displaced Jews immediately following WWII which prompted her to go head-to-head with anti-Semites in the US Department of State and with the British colonial administration. Her tales of being in harm's way display real power whether the danger is physical—slogging through Alaska dodging Nazis to spirit away refugees—or emotional as when she reports on camps for displaced Jews in Germany and Israel. The author' ingenuous storytelling gives verve to momentous events. Carroll & Graf Publishers hardcover‎

‎Israel on the Seventh Day‎

‎New York: Hill and Wang 1968. First Edition stated presumed first printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair. ix 1214 pages. Illustrations. Maps. Chronology. Index. Small dent in fore-edge. DJ soiled with some edge wear and small tear. Presentation copy signed by author. Ruth Gruber September 30 1911 - November 17 2016 was an American journalist photographer writer humanitarian and a United States government official. Born in Brooklyn to Russian Jewish immigrants she was encouraged to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. At age 20 she became the youngest person ever to receive a doctorate which was awarded for her dissertation on Virginia Woolf. She authored nineteen books including the National Jewish Book Award-winning biography Raquela 1978. She also wrote several memoirs documenting her astonishing experiences among them Ahead of Time 1991 Inside of Time 2002 and Haven 1983 which documents her role in the rescue of one thousand refugees from Europe and their safe transport to America. In the 1930s she established herself as a journalist writing about women under fascism and communism traveling as far as the Soviet Arctic. She was a recipient of the Norman Mailer Prize. Report on the Six Day War and an assessment of conditions in Israel and all the Middle East one year after the war. The Six-Day War also known as the June War 1967 Arab-Israeli War or Third Arab-Israeli War was fought between 5 and 10 June 1967 by Israel and the neighboring states of Egypt known at the time as the United Arab Republic Jordan and Syria.

Relations between Israel and its neighbors were not normalized after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. In 1956 Israel invaded the Sinai peninsula in Egypt with one of its objectives being the reopening of the Straits of Tiran that Egypt had blocked to Israeli shipping since 1950. Israel was eventually forced to withdraw but was guaranteed that the Straits of Tiran would remain open. A United Nations Emergency Force was deployed along the border but there was no demilitarization agreement.

In the months prior to June 1967 tensions became dangerously heightened. Israel reiterated its post-1956 position that the closure of the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping would be a cause for war. In May Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser announced that the straits would be closed to Israeli vessels and then mobilized its Egyptian forces along its border with Israel in addition to kicking out UNEF. On 5 June Israel launched a series of preemptive airstrikes against Egyptian airfields asserting imminent attack from the Egyptians.

The Egyptians were caught by surprise and nearly the entire Egyptian air force was destroyed with few Israeli losses giving the Israelis air supremacy. Simultaneously the Israelis launched a ground offensive into the Gaza Strip and the Sinai which again caught the Egyptians by surprise. After some initial resistance Nasser ordered the evacuation of the Sinai. Israeli forces rushed westward in pursuit of the Egyptians inflicted heavy losses and conquered the Sinai.

Jordan had entered into a defence pact with Egypt a week before the war began; the agreement envisaged that in the event of war Jordan would not take an offensive role but would attempt to tie down Israeli forces to prevent them making territorial gains. About an hour after the Israeli air attack the Egyptian commander of the Jordanian army was ordered by Cairo to begin attacks on Israel; in the initially confused situation the Jordanians were told that Egypt had repelled the Israeli air strikes.

Egypt and Jordan agreed to a ceasefire on 8 June and Syria agreed on 9 June; a ceasefire was signed with Israel on 11 June. In the aftermath of the war Israel had crippled the Egyptian Syrian and Jordanian militaries having killed over 20000 troops while losing fewer than 1000 of its own. The Israeli success was the result of a well-prepared and enacted strategy the poor leadership of the Arab states and their poor military leadership and strategy. Israel seized the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt the West Bank including East Jerusalem from Jordan and the Golan Heights from Syria. Israel's international standing greatly improved in the following years. Its victory humiliated Egypt Jordan and Syria leading Nasser to resign in shame; he was later reinstated after protests in Egypt against his resignation. The speed and ease of Israel's victory would later lead to a dangerous overconfidence within the ranks of the Israel Defense Forces IDF contributing to initial Arab successes in the subsequent 1973 Yom Kippur War although ultimately Israeli forces were successful and defeated the Arab militaries. The displacement of civilian populations resulting from the war would have long-term consequences as 300000 Palestinians fled the West Bank and about 100000 Syrians left the Golan Heights. Page 13 "The farms of Israel are like farms nowhere in the world shaped by a people hungering for roots and the immortality of the land. To most of its pioneers the thing of greatest beauty in Israel lies in the kibbutz." Page 85 "Every kibbutz has little toddlers with black hair blond hair red hair running around like chickens. Nurses and teachers assigned to the children's quarters take care of them. Parents play with their children after work and at night each mother tucks her own children into bed."
