Initially drawn to the meaning of laughter through her decades of work studying crying from an attachment perspective Nelson argues that laughter is based in the attachment system which explains much about its confusing and apparently contradictory qualities. Laughter may represent connection or detachment. It can invite closeness or be a barrier to it. Some laughter helps us cope with stress other laughter may serve as a defense and represent resistance to growth and change. Nelson resolves these paradoxes and complexities by linking attachment-based laughter with the exploratory/play system in infancy and the social/affiliative system the conflict/appeasement sexual/mating and fear/wariness systems of later life. An attachment perspective also helps to explain the source of different patterns and uses of laughter suggests how and why they may vary according to attachment style and explain the multiple meanings of laughter in the context of the therapeutic relationship. First edition and printing of this rare concertina version of poems and images in what the artist describes as a "theatrical booklet". The last page has the name of the artist Carolyn Trant in pencil with date - 2009 - though this cannot be authenticated. However a proof copy of 'Sonnet Of The Garland' currently for sale with shows her signature in pencil which matches the signature in this book.The pages are held inside stiff textured green boards with what appears to be yellow hand written titles to front and opened with green ribbon ties. The boards are very flat and have slight discolouration on the front. The concertina pages inside are very clean and even and brightly illustrated. In fine condition. A fantastic concertina book with Trant's striking images. The first edition of this work in the concertina form. Previously 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' was issued in a larger format which was a limited edition.On her website Trant notes that she produced this smaller 'theatrical booklet' version of the work for the Artists Book Fair at the Phoenix Gallery in Brighton. The poem for this work was written for Trant by Judith Kazantzis. From the library of Allen and Beryl Freer. The Freers were avid art collectors and acquired quite the selection over the twentieth century of works mostly bought from the artists. Allen organised many exhibitions of artists he admired and published several works on art. A charming work. In the publisher's original boards. Externally excellent with minor shelfwear.
