1972. Very Good binding. A small archive of correspondence between Sir Julian Huxley the scientist writer and brother of Aldous Huxley and a Mr. John T. Parks of Richardson Texas. ~There are four autograph letters signed and written by Sir Julian. In them Huxley comments on such things as the burning of the White House in the War of 1812 various species of fish and the vices of the Arabs. Of the Arabs he comments: "their greatest trouble was the power of the different sheiks - which led to a form of tribalism and hindered unity. Oil has helped some materially - but even the oil 'kingdoms' are very backward as regards education & health. Let us hope that this division will continue so as to prevent mass war against Israel." This written a mere year before the Yom Kippur War. ~Sir Julian's handwritten letters are at times difficult to transcribe and the archive helpfully includes typed transcripts of them. ~~Correspondent John Parks requested autographs for certain copies of Sir Julian's works one of which is included with the letters: an off-print copy of "World Population" from Scientific American signed by Sir Julian on the front cover. The archive also includes correspondence between Mr. Parks and publishers as well as the subscription department at The New Yorker: "For the trouble I caused him . I asked him and Lady Huxley what they would like short of a herd of longhorn steers . and he said he rather thought that a subscription to The New Yorker would do nicely". Finally includes an autographed letter signed by Judith Huxley daughter-in-law of Aldous thanking the Mr. Parks for the loan of a book. Very Good binding. unknown books

Important manuscrit biographique donnant la liste de toutes les pièces dans lesquelles elle a joué mais aussi les ouvrages qu'elle a publiés, que ce soit les « romans originaux » ou ses traductions. On remarquera notamment Un Drame de la rue, d'Edmund Yates, dont la traduction est publiée par son mari mais qui est revendiqué ici par Judith. Elle mentionne aussi La Femme du Cabotin, parue sans mention de traducteur en 1888, mais dont elle annonce la publication avec une préface d'Emile Zola. L'ouvrage est paru sans préface mais le projet était effectivement là puisque Zola en parle dans plusieurs lettres à Jacques Van Santen Kolff en 1886-1887. Important document. [404]

Belle lettre à André Pichot (1950-2025). « Cher Monsieur, je vous réponds bien tardivement, mais ce n'est que tout récemment que j'ai pu me mettre à votre "étude théorique des rapports du bio et du psy" [i.e. Etude théorique des rapports du biologique et du psychologique chez l'animal et chez l'homme, publié en 1983] (ayant après "La vie de la vie" négligé le bio pour travailler plutôt sur le psy). J'ai été très frappé par la similitude de nos préoccupations, rendue plus frappante encore par la distance de nos points de départ et l'élaboration personnelle par chacune des notions lui devant être utile. Mais sans doute l'intuition identique première est dans le sentiment de la nécessite supérieure de théoriser ce qui nous est apporté en profusion, confusion comme vous dites, mais aussi simplification (sub-théorique) les sciences biologiques. Aussi [mots illisibles] le fait que vous partez d'une définition auto-éco-référentielle de la vie, et que vous définissez d'abord la [mot illisible] en termes biologiques, c'est-à-dire antérieurement à toute conscience. Et, aussi, que vous liez primordialement des notes de vie, d'individu, de sujet. Cette convergence m'encourage beaucoup ; parce que les biologistes refusent toute pensée théorique (par une spéculation sans portée empirique) et que les philosophes ne s'intéressent pas à l'apport formidable des sciences biologiques, nous sommes dans une traversée de désert, où il est réconfortant de voir un autre voyageur.
