‎Rowbotham Judith; Kim Stevenson; editors‎

‎Criminal Conversations Victorian Crimes Social Panic and Moral.‎

‎2005. Ohio State University Press 2005. 9780814209738. Ohio State University Press 2005. 9780814209738. Rowbotham Judith; editor. Stevenson Kim; editor. Criminal Conversations Victorian Crimes Social Panic and Moral Outrage. Columbus: The Ohio State University Press 2005. xxxii 318 pp. ISBN: 9780814209738. Hardcover as new excellent condition. $65. In the climate of social panics that characterized so much of the Victorian period there was keen consciousness of the threats a variety of crimes posed to social stability. Conversations about crime particularly via the media were a major feature of Victorian Britain's daily life and it was through such conversations that people learned about the nature of crime and criminality as well as about the individuals who committed crimes or were merely guilty of socially offensive conduct or "bad" behavior. The essays in this book set out to explore the ways in which Victorians used newspapers to identify the causes of bad behavior and its impacts and the ways in which they tried to "distance" criminals and those guilty of "bad" behavior from the ordinary members of society including identification of them as different according to race or sexual orientation. It also explores how threats from within "normal" society were depicted and the panic that issues like "baby-farming" caused. Victorian alarm was about crimes and bad behavior which they saw as new or unique to their period-but which were not new then and which in slightly different dress are still causing panic today. What is striking about the essays in this collection are the ways they echo contemporary concerns about crime and bad behavior including panics about "new" types of crime. This has implications for modern understandings of how society needs to understand crime demonstrating that while there are changes over time there are also important continuities. Judith Rowbotham is senior lecturer in history Nottingham Trent University. Kim Stevenson is senior lecturer in law at the University of Plymouth. Rowbotham and Stevenson are founders and directors of SOLON: Promoting Interdisciplinary Studies in Bad Behavior and Crime. unknown books‎

‎Andoversford: The Whittington Press Manor Farm 1984. Imperial 16mo. 19.5 x 14 cm. 44 pages. Text set in 12-point Bell. Printed in black the illustrations in reddish-brown on Zerkall Silurian paper. Bound by Smith Settle. FIRST EDITION one of 250 unnumbered copies. There was also a deluxe edition of thirty copies with the illustrations colored by hand and enclosed in a black clamshell box. One of the most charming of late 20th century cookbooks. The text evokes the ordinary manner in which recipes are collected and adapted in the home kitchen over time and the illustrations perfectly match this depicting the family mid-meal the author bending into the reach in for ingredients or picking fallen fruit while hanging laundry. Judith Verity obtained material for the lino by pulling up part of the floor of the village school nearby and the first job in printing was to scrape the cement off the back of each cut. Bound in decorated fabric red and blue with a title label printed in red inset on the upper board. Fine. A most lovely book. The Whittington Press, Manor Farm unknown books‎

‎Davidov Judith Fryer‎

‎WOMEN'S CAMERA WORK:; SELF/BODY/OTHER IN AMERICAN VISUAL CULTURE‎

‎Durham: Duke University Press 1998. Second printing. Thick 8vo. xii 494 pp. b&w illustrations from photographs and drawings. Remainder line on bottom edge; else fine in illustrated stiff wrappers. "Women's Camera Work explores how photographs have been and are used to construct versions of history and examines how photographic representations of otherness often tell stories about the self. In the process Judith Fryer Davidov focuses on the lives and work of a particular network of artists linked by time interaction influence and friendship--one that included Gertrude Kasebier Imogen Cunningham Dorothea Lange and Laura Gilpin.

Women's Camera Work ranges from American women's photographic practices during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to a study of landscape photography. Using contemporary cultural studies discourse to critique influential male-centered historiography and the male-dominated art world Davidov exhibits the work of these women; tells their absorbing stories; and discusses representations of North American Indians African Americans Asian Americans and the migrant poor. Evaluating these photographers' distinct contributions to constructions of Americanness and otherness she helps us to discover the power of reading images closely and to learn to see through these women's eyes." ‎FAINLIGHT Ruth; JUDITH ROTHCHILD‎

‎Nacre.‎

‎2010. ROTHCHILD Judith. Nacre. Poems by Ruth Fainlight. 20 pp. Illustrated with 8 mezzotints by Judith Rothchild. Square 4to. 255 x 220 mm bound by Mark Lintott with wrap- around boards consisting of mauve-coloured paper over boards raspberry-coloued linen chemise with titled spine in matching grey paper over boards slipcase. Octon France: Verdigris Press 2010. First Edition limited to 42 copies with the mezzotints printed on Hahnemülhe paper colophon hand-numbered and signed by the author Ruth Fainlight and the artist Judith Rothchild. The text has been hand set and printed letterpress in Vendome Romain on an Albion press of 1867 by Mark Lintott. Rothchild designed and printed the mezzotints herself. Title-page and colophon with embossed text and/or imagery. "The magnificent pearls with their orient nacre were saved for queens and emperors. Entire villages holding their breath: how many diver's lives lost in the oyster beds for a royal crown" The poems by Fainlight are a perfect compliment to Rothchild's characteristically black-velvet mezzotints infused with sexual overtones of elegance and luxury offering the perfect medium for the mysteriously creative cradle of the pearl.
