DUST JACKET: Lightly Creased; Lightly Chipped; In Archival Quality Jacket Cover. A compelling story of love determination and survival. JACKET DESIGN: Bruce W. Bond. SYNOPSIS: Saul Rubinek never intended to write this book. He was in love with a non-Jewish girl and in order to overcome the problems this caused with his parents and to be on speaking terms with them again he used the ruse of telling them he wanted to have their stories on tape. Stories about how they grew up in Poland about the war how they were hidden stories about love and survival. Saul grew up thinking that everyone parents had nightmares. While interviewing his mother and father Saul found more than the source of nightmares. This powerful oral history paints a vivid picture of the young "shtetl" girl who fell in love with the first Jewish man she ever saw dance the tango--the city boy a boy who had broken away from religious tradition to make his fortune as an actor. Through conversation and monologue Saul has invited the reader to enter the life of his family. So Many Miracles tells the story of this young couple's love and marriage over the strenuous objections of parents despite the spectre of war and Holocaust. Frania and Israel tell of their 28 months in hiding with Polish farmers; of how they ran from Poland with the help of an underground refugee network and made their way through the Displaced Persons camp to Canada. The last part of the book is about the Rubineks' return to Poland after more than 40 years to have a reunion with the Polish family who saved their lives. Saul began to tape interviews with his mother and father over 12 years ago. What emerged was not only a family reconciliation but also an intricate personal history--romantic horrific and passionate. Saul Rubinek is best known as an actor. He has been seen in such films as Sweet Liberty Wall Street and Against All Odds. He was nominated for a Genie Award for Claude Jutra's By Design and won the Best Supporting Actor Award for Ralph Thomas's Ticket to Heaven. His most recent film is The Outside Chance of Maximillian Glick. Saul Rubinek was born in a Displaced Persons camp in Germany in 1948 and came to Canada with his parents in 1949. He worked as a child actor in stage and radio and became a member of Stratford Company at 20. He was a founding member of the Toronto Free Theatre and has worked extensively on Canadian stages and on the CBC. Saul Rubinek divides his time between Toronto and New York and Los Angeles if he has to. First Edition 1st Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.
