From a posting on-line: "Legendary community organizer Saul Alinsky inspired a generation of activists and politicians with Reveille for Radicals the original handbook for social change. First published in 1946 and updated in 1969 with a new introduction and afterword this classic volume is a bold call to action that still resonates today." From Wikipedia: "Saul David Alinsky January 30 1909 June 12 1972 was an American community organizer and writer. He is generally considered to be the founder of modern community organizing. He is often noted for his book Rules for Radicals. In the course of nearly four decades of political organizing Alinsky received much criticism but also gained praise from many public figures. His organizing skills were focused on improving the living conditions of poor communities across North America. In the 1950s he began turning his attention to improving conditions in the African-American ghettos beginning with Chicago's and later traveling to other ghettos in California Michigan New York City and a dozen other "trouble spots"." ‎Reveille for Radicals‎

‎Chicago: University of Chicago Press 1946. Second Printing. Hardcover. At the time of its publication Jacques Maritain called Reveille for Radicals an "epoch-making" book and time has only reinforced the enduring importance of Alinsky's work. Based upon Alinsky's own experiences in Chicago's "Back of the Yards" district during the waning years of the Great Depression Reveille established a blueprint for community organizing that is still in use today. The book's influence along with its 1971 update Rules for Radicals on the current generation of American leaders including Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton has been much noted in fact Ms. Clinton's undergraduate thesis at Wellesley "An Analysis of the Alinsky Model" was an analysis and critique of Alinsky's community organizing methods. ‎New York: Random House 1971. Hardcover. Good and tight; underlining on occasional pages. Age toning and general shelf wear/edge wear to dj. Former owner's name on ffep. Black cloth/boards; gilt lettering. White/red/yellow ochre dj with bw lettering. xxv 196 pp. with no illustrations. Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals is the last book published in 1971 by activist and writer Saul D. Alinsky shortly before his death. His goal for the Rules for Radicals was to create a guide for future community organizers to use in uniting low-income communities or "Have-Nots" in order for them to gain social political legal and economic power. Within it Alinsky compiled the lessons he had learned throughout his experiences of community organizing from 1939-1971 and targeted these lessons at the current new generation of radicals. Divided into ten chapters Rules for Radicals provides 10 lessons on how a community organizer can accomplish the goal of successfully uniting people into an active organization with the power to effect change on a variety of issues. Though targeted at community organization these chapters also touch on other issues that range from ethics education communication and symbol construction to nonviolence and political philosophy. Though published for the new generation of counterculture-era organizers in 1971 Alinsky's principles have been successfully applied by numerous government labor community and congregation-based organizations and the main themes of his organizational methods that were elucidated upon in Rules for Radicals have been recurring elements in political campaigns in recent years. Perhaps quite timely. Random House hardcover‎

Random House hardcover books‎
