Spine gently cocked and some gentle dust-soiling to the top edge. Internally clean and bright. In a very good or slightly better dust jacket a tinge darkened on the spine and with some gentle wear to the spine ends. Otherwise no notable chips or tears. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Bellow on the front free endpaper in the year of publication: "To Kurt Carla Wolff Affectionately Saul Bellow." One of the Wolffs has neatly written "Kurt Carla Wolff Chicago Mr. 27 1944 H. Bookstore" at the top right corner of that same leaf indicating the date and location of purchase and then again "Chicago Ap 15 1944" just below the inscription thus dating the inscription to April 15 1944. Kurt Wolff was an influential German-Jewish sociologist and refugee from Nazism. Though he lived in many places throughout the US he spent the years of 1943-44 at the University of Chicago's Social Science Research Council. Bellow though born in Quebec was raised in Chicago which served as the setting for many of his novels including this first effort. Though we could not track down a specific publication date contemporary reviews seem clustered in late March of 1944 which makes this a very early inscription certainly within a month and a half of publication. Other signed copies we've found in commerce are often signed many years after publication. Aside from the date of the inscription a pleasing World War II-era association; bringing together two immigrant Jewish intellectuals one a refugee social scientist from Europe and another a celebrated chronicler of Jewish-American anxieties through the medium of fiction.
