Isaac D'Israeli 1766 1848 was a British writer scholar and man of letters. He is best known for his essays his associations with other men of letters and as the father of British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. The work contained a myriad of anecdotes about historical persons and events unusual books and the habits of book-collectors. The work was very popular and sold widely in the 19th century reaching its eleventh edition the last to be revised by the author in 1839. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown. In half-calf bindings. Externally sound with slight rubbing and some wear to the extremities. Bookplate to front pastedowns. Internally firmly bound with bright and clean pages throughout save for some browning. Loss to title pages of both volumes probably to excise an ownership signature. Good John Murray hardcover

A smartly bound three volume set of anecdotes relating authors quarrels throughout history written by Isaac D'Israeli. Complete in three volumes. This humorous and informative work looks at various author quarrels throughout history. Some of the authors included are Warbuton Pope Addison Bolinbroke D'Avenant Boyle Parker Hobbes and Camden. This work could be considered a continuation of 'Calamities of Authors'. Written by Isaac D'Israeli though his name isn't stated to the title pages. D'Israeli was a scholar and writer who was the father of the Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. He was brought up Jewish but split from the religion later on in his life. He begun his literary career at sixteen becoming a man of letters and being in correspondence with many influential writers of his times. His most popular work was 'Curiosities of Literature' though he also wrote several historical biographies and also published many poems. Handsomely bound in full calf. Externally very smart. Rubbing to the spines and extremities. A few scratches to the front boards of Volumes II and III. Internally front and rear hinges to Volume III are strained but remain firm. Internally pastedowns both front and rear and free-endpapers both front and rear have slight discolouration to the edges. Internally pages in all volumes are generally bright and clean with a few scattered spots more to the front and last pages. Very Good John Murray hardcover

A new improved and expanded edition originally published as 'An Essay on the Literary Character'. Previously owned by A. N. L. Munby an English librarian and an author of ghost stories. Isaac D'Israeli's study on the notable literary figures and their qualities examining their lives and experiences to explore what makes them successful. As explained in the preface to the work the author wrote the original work in his youth and after finding a copy of his work with critiquing notes added to the margin decided to re-write the work and add to it. The work also mentions particular prominent literary and intellectual figures such as Galileo Newton Bacon Milton and many more. Bound in full modern paper covered boards. Inscribed by Snead under his frontis portrait possibly holographic and FFEP. 4to. 154 pp. With fourteen pages of chromolithographs some full page plates and many other illustrations of schools heating systems and the like. The primary thrust of this promotional book is the application of the heating system to schools but even those not particularly fascinated by the topic will find the illustrations pleasing and as a sales-oriented book this one stands out as especially elaborate for its day. The work also addresses other piquant topics such as "The Dry Closet System of Disposing of Excrement" "The Physiology of Respiration" etc. Much of the text is presented as a dialogue making this work a precursor of sorts for the modern day infomercial.
